My wife and I just came from Jamul Casino and wanted some Pizza and we stopped by Filippi's Pizza Grotto. Before we got to the front door, I could smell the Pizza's coming from the ovens with all of the Italian herbs, pizza sauce, etc. We were greeted by the Hostess, Elise as we entered the restaurant. She was very pleasant, friendly and we felt comfortable with her. We asked our server Maxwell to recommend what Pizza is popular and he recommended the Fit for a King. When the Pizza arrived it had a massive amount of Mozzarella and or Provolone cheese, with Sausage, Pepperoni, black Olives, green Bell Peppers, onions, pizza sauce. It was nice and thick and had a crisp darkened crust. The Pizza was one of the best my wife and I had in San Diego. Unbelievable!!!! I asked Maxwell for a good glass of red wine and he brought me a very good wine that was perfect. We also ordered Antipasto Salad. The Antipasto salad was enough for both of us. The mixed greens had Salami, Pepperoni, Coppocola Ham, pepperoncini, provolone cheese cubes, green olives, artichokes, black olives and Vinagrette dressing. It was outstanding!! We also was served hot warm Italian bread with margarine-very good. I like the old fashion Italian restaurant look with the red and white table cloths, with lattice design with the vineyard look and wine bottles. I want to personally thank Elise the hostess, Maxwell the server and Dan Miller who cooked the Pizza. Your service was top notch and you should be commended for your superior performance, customer service skills and most of all your hospitality. Thank You, Ed and Janice read more

I've always loved Filippi's, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. Last night (9/18/26), we picked up two cheesy breads on our way home after being out of town. When we got home, we discovered that parchment paper was stuck to the cheese on both cheesy breads. We tried to peel it off, but the paper kept ripping and sticking to the cheese, leaving a layer of parchment paper covering the bread. Obviously, we couldn't eat them. I called the store to explain what happened, and I was told that I would need to bring the cheesy breads back to the store and they would then decide whether they would make us new ones. We live 45 minutes away, so I was not going to drive an hour and a half round trip just to return two defective cheesy breads. I asked to speak with the manager, and unfortunately, the interaction became even more frustrating. The manager was extremely rude and dismissive. He told me that in his 20 years there, he had never heard of parchment paper sticking to the cheese and he didn't believe me. I told him I would send in pictures to that he dismissed. He also told me that I should have checked my food before leaving the restaurant and that I needed to do that next time. I explained that I have three young children, six and under, and that driving 45 minutes back to the restaurant was not a reasonable solution. After a lot of back and forth, he reluctantly agreed to give me store credit for one cheesy bread. The problem was that I had ordered two, and this happened to both of them. When I pointed that out, he responded, "What? Now it's two cheesy breads?" I told him it had always been two that was my order. He then said he would write down that I had store credit. I asked how I was supposed to know the credit would actually be documented when he had never asked my name or looked up my order. After putting me on hold for about 10 minutes, he apparently went through the orders to find mine. The food issue was disappointing, but honestly, the way the manager handled the situation was the worst part. Mistakes happen. I understand that. What I don't understand is making a customer feel like they are lying, blaming them for the problem, and making them feel like they're asking for something unreasonable when they're simply trying to get what they paid for. I love Filippi's, but after this experience, I will not be returning to this location. Customer service makes a huge difference, and this was one of the worst manager interactions I've ever experienced. read more

We have been coming here for years and we always have had great food with great service. As you walk in you are always warmly welcomed by everyone like family. From the cashier, the servers and cooks, they always stop for a second to say "hi". As you leave, they all make sure to say "thank you" and "have a great day". Also the decor that's stayed the same over the years gives you some comfort. It's like walking into your Nonna's dining room. Seriously, the red and white checkered tablecloths and the empty Chianti bottles hanging on the wooden rafters feels like a warm hugs. The first time we gave this location a try was for my daughter's 5th grade "promotion" to middle school. There were 12 of us and we had a blasts. The kids fell in love with their bread and our sweet waiter kept them coming. We recently dined in just the two of us and had the same experience. The servers are all so polite. Even changed the channel for us so we could watch the Padres game. Food is always good. We ummm ordered hungry and had pizza, Antipasto salad, lasagna, ravioli and meatball. read more

* We brought my Mother here for her 88th Birthday Celebration. * The staff, food & service were just awesome. * We were provided a private dining room & allowed to continue celebrating long after dinner was completed, with continued excellent service for beverages & snacks. * I really liked the private & unhurried environment that was provided & would highly recommend this business to family & friends. read more

This location has gone downhill significantly. I loved the gluten free pizza - sad to lose a staple in my takeout arsenal. The crust was so horrible that I actually scraped the toppings off and ate them separately. My husband got a meatball side to add and going in I was happy he didn't have to have an entirely disappointing experience: enter reality. His statement was that it was a ball of meat but it seems like they forgot to add the flavor packet that actually makes them good. Salad was our last bastion of hope. I've not been so offended by olives in my entire life. Watered down house Italian dressing plus old, papery peppers rounded out the waste of money experience. I guess the upside is that it was bad enough that we didn't eat enough to make it a waste of calories. We eat at the Escondido location as well when we're up there with family and they're amazing. Sadly they keep fresh in our minds what is possible and this location doesn't even try. Not worth the price or wait. I'm sorry they've deprioritized the palatability of food and now I have to deal with La Mesa Surfrider parking in the summer to grab takeout pizza. read more

Filippi's is a solid East County spot when you are craving their thick, loaded with cheese pizza, one or two slices is a meal for even a big man. Unfortunately, I ordered lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and eggplant parm, which were generally mediocre at best. Next time I will make sure to stick to the pizza only as that is always spot on. The meatballs were very bready tasting with little flavor and the meat sauce that came with it was bland, either straight from the can or lacking in flavor if fresh, I could not tell. The lasagna was also bland, with little cheese and mostly overcooked noodles as layers. The spaghetti was way overcooked, so much so, I could not eat any of it at all. The eggplant parm was not bad and that saved a two star review. The Italian bread was fresh, but total zero for flavor. My recommendation is come here for the pizza, but there are other options in East County for great non-pizza dishes. This location has a family friendly environment that is good for large groups. Service is always friendly and efficient at the front counter. read more

Love this place. Great pizza and amazing, friendly service. Everything you could want in a pizza place!

One of the top pizza places in san diego ! I actually prefer this location the best out of all of them in San Diego. This location has been established since the 1950's and still hasnt disappointed ! The atmosphere is very Italian like. It has the traditional red and white checker tablecloth on the tables. Theres also a bunch of bottles hanging from the ceiling which show peoples names and families as well. I love how their pizza is slapped with cheese on top of all the toppings. Very cheesy pizza and they do not skip out on the toppings. I ordered the fit for a king pizza . It comes with Cheese, Sausage, Mushroom, Pepperoni, Black Olive, Bell Pepper & Onion. All the ingredients taste fresh ! The tomato sauce is very fresh ! Its sweet but also has that nice tangy tomato taste. The antipasta salad was also very refreshing. The cheese and salami combo in addition with the salad is very good ! The service was exceptional and our server was very attentive. Will definitely be coming back here ! read more

The food is always great, but the service really needs improvement. I live in Jamul, and it's not exactly close to anything. The last two times I ordered pickup, items were missing from my order. Having to drive all the way back to fix their mistake is unacceptable. What's even more frustrating is not receiving so much as an apology call. Great food only goes so far when the service keeps falling short. read more

We had a large cheese and a large works pizza plus we also had the antipasto salad. Well, I consider this pizza to be pretty close to being the best in San Diego! The cheese I believe is the secret. So thick and the flavor explodes in your mouth! They also pack the pepperoni that gives it that much more flavor the antipasto comes alive with the salad dressing that would make any salad the best ever! I just wish the prices were lower so I could eat here weekly. Total cost for the two pizzas and antipasto was 80.00 lucky for us it was takeout or the bill would have been over 100 with a tip and drinks! Best place for a quick authentic Italian dinner! read more

Booked a reservation over a week ago (in person) for a graduation dinner and when we got here (day of graduation) we were told there was also another graduation party therefore we needed to sit outside, well it's cold and now 9pm still sitting out here with no lights and asked them to turn them on 4 times. Went back inside and asked to speak with the manager and he said he was busy making food! WTF They don't even know the general managers information! Our server Max felt so bad and kept saying he was sorry (nice kid) HONESTLY not coming here anymore I would like to think positive and think this HORRIBLE SERVICE wasn't due to the color of our skin!!! read more

A local/San Diego family owned chain that serves Italian food, but we always get the pizza. The pepperoni& sausage is our go to, but this is no ordinary pizza. The cheese is the topping, but what lies underneath is about a 1/4" of layered pepperoni. The cheese is thick & incredibly fresh & delicious & slightly toasted. Because it's so hefty, you should call it in before ordering as it can take about 30mins to make & bake. It's priced fairly for a handmade pizza with incredible quality & quantity of ingredients, but made with love. read more

I really love supporting family owned so this was a major disappointment. Hate to be in this situation. But gotta be honest I ordered the clam linguine with white sauce. The noodles were overcooked and watery. Clams straight out the can , took a bite n it all mushed together, no flavor no care , tried salt tried Parmesan tried pepper flakes , presentation was sloppy Then the fettuccine Alfredo also lacking flavor, noodles over cooked , chicken was bland Service was slow and there was nothing that stood out to me other than they didn't care to check on us, read more

Filippi's east county the best! Only had a pizza to go this time but by far the best.

The Bottom Line: A good place to enjoy pizza, Italian-American dishes, in a fun atmosphere, without being too expensive. A dependable place for pizza, lots of selections, and flexible options for all. The Good: fast, prompt service with lots of choices, special selections, and substitutions. There really is something for everyone. The Bad: not horrible, but the quality is sometimes worse than other pizza restaurants. Also, if you aren't prepped to have a ton of cheese, it'll be quite a shock. read more

I only went for the pizza. The pizza is thick and not floppy. It is delicious! Best pizza in town. I had pizza for breakfast the next day and lunch. We also ordered a side salad & they brought warm bread with it that was delicious too. The service was friendly. There was plenty of parking and the restaurant seemed pretty full for a Wednesday evening. It was definitely a family restaurant. Everyone was there with their family. My husband and o really wanted an authentic Italian pizza for dinner one night. So we went to this little gem of a place in a little town called Jamul. We ordered our favorite Pepperoni and pineapple easy sauce and thick crust. I would suggest regular crust because they take their crust serious. Thick crust was too much. They put their fixings under the cheese which is fine but we prefer our pepperoni and Pineapple a little toasted and bringing out under the cheese keeps it from getting that nice crisp. I must tell you the sauce was so original and flavorful . Such an amazing pizza, I'll know better next time to not change the pizza from their recommendations. They have been making pizzas since 1945!!! read more

We went for lunch after normal lunch hours and both ordered lunch size lasagna and they came out of the kitchen extremely fast, so much that we both mentioned it to the waitress (who seemed to be by herself) and the sauce on top was virtually overflowing on the plates and was steaming but we cut into lasagna and it was at best "warm" to the extent that we sent them both back. I was quite frankly expecting the same plate reheated or the microwave but, both came out as new and fresh once again steaming sauce but, again really quickly, both new supposedly warmed up plates were exactly the same as the original. The waitress offered to reheat them again but, we said no thanks and left. Have to give kudos to the waitress as she was swamped and tried her best to keep everything going, we had to wait quite a bit to even see her again to bring first plates to the attention. It's sad we have come here before, that's why we came back but, never again, two strikes and your out... read more

I am so disappointed at writing this review. I've bought at least 300 pizzas from this Filippi's over the 42 years I've lived in the neighborhood (I don't remember if we or they were here first). Anyway, over the past couple of years, I've noticed the consistency of the pizzas has become unpredictable - sometimes gobs and gobs of cheese and other times a haphazard sprinkling of ingredients. In all those years, I only felt it necessary to bring a pizza issue up with the manager (Steve at the time) once - he immediately and cheerfully gave me full credit for a future pizza. Today was different. Only 6 of the 16 slices on our to-go half-and-half were fully loaded - it was the expensive "Fit for a King" half that was shorted. This was embarrassing since that did not provide full servings for our adult guests. Rather than immediately work toward a solution, the manager first tried to convince me that the slight sprinkling of ingredients on the edge of two of the cheese slices was somehow in the spirit of a half-and-half. I also advised her that the pizza was also very salty - too salty for some to eat. She quipped that they "do not add salt," so I guess that's that - my experience with eating some 300 Filippi's pizzas has no merit, and there is no possible way they may have inadvertently gotten too much salt in the dough or whatever. To be fair, she eventually (but not very gracefully) said she would issue a credit, but by that time, I decided my years of Filippi's pizza buying were over. I do not need to come in as a customer and have the manager try to justify everything I have an issue with. Goodbye Filippi's - I'm mostly sorry to take my business elsewhere. read more

I read the reviews about Fillippi's in other locations. The amount of 5 star reviews are/were amazing. I figured this location had to be just as great. It wasn't a far drive from our campground -- Thousand Trails Pio Pico. My mouth is watering writing this review. Once inside, there is a window that shows you what the pizza chefs/cooks are doing. My husband was madly impressed with the amount of cheese and pepperoni on the pizza. In the lobby, 3 people were waiting for their take out orders. That's a great sign the food is good here. We decided to sit inside. The taped off other tables. It was safe. I believe San Diego county had just moved to the orange tier. My husband, my cousins, and I ordered draft beers. We also ordered 1 large Pepperoni pizza and 1 medium sausage and olive pizza. We also ordered the antipasto salad. WOWEE KAZOWEE!!! So yummy. We were all totally impressed. The pizza at Fillippi's is tied for 1st place as the BEST pizza we ever had. (The other pizza place is in Groveland near Yosemite), The portions are huge, the cheese is plentiful and the toppings were generous. We had leftovers for days. Hubby says he had 4 meals in all with the large pizza. We all loved the antipasto salad as well. Our server was kind and fun. I need to reiterate that the toppings are very very generous. My husband says it is 4x the amount of cheese and pepperoni as other pizzerias. You will not be disappointed. Bon Appetit! read more

Great food! Great service! Very pizza and spaghetti place! Can't beat it. And locations all over!

The worst experience ever with pizza. They should call it Filippi's pizza Grotes. I opened the box. I try to take a slice off the whole pizza moved. So I said, okay, I'll try to cut the pizza away from the other piece impossible. The whole cheese topping just came off with ingredients in the bottom. I was left with a piece of bread in my hand. I was so disappointed. I'm all the way from Corona. Usually go through here every Thursday. I wanted to give it a try, but definitely not worth it. Wish I could get my thirty three dollars back. This is not worth it at all. If I could have driven back before I opened this box. I should've read all of these comments. I will never stop by here ever again. The cheese doesn't even taste like cheese It's so chewing and thick...hard to swallow and chew. The bread is even harder to chew. I'm really choking on this f****** bread. Very tasteless, too many ingredients all on top of each other. Whoever's doing the pizza doesn't know how to make pizza. Mind you my son works at Mod pizza and I've seen how they make pizza. Whoever is doing this is horrible. You put the sauce first, then you add the cheese. Then you put the frickin' toppings. Nobody asked for extra f****** cheese on top. Horrible, horrible, disgusting. read more

Filippi's Pizza Grotto Jamul - Pizza should not look like this. - Pizza Near Me - Jamul, California

It sure has been awhile since I have visited this particular Filippi's Pizza Grotto, and I sure glad I did. I had the "Super Torpedo" and this time they got it right. Last time, I believe I had the Capocollo prepared hot, but they forgot to heat it up, but this time around, they baked the cheese and deli meats right onto the roll as I requested. The sandwich came with a host of deli meat, including ham, cotto salami, Capocollo, and hard salami, not to mention provolone cheese. I asked for the supper torpedo to be doused in their oil based dressing. The torpedo was large, so large that it did not even fit inside the basket they served it in. All the deli mat tasted just grand together, and other than the torpedo needing more provolone cheese, it was just right. Two layers of cheese would be good because with one, I was unable to taste the cheese. I love provolone and I want to taste it, as it should be. The shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and onions were all fresh, and the oil based dressing was tasty. The roll was properly toasted which gave it good texture. Service was friendly and attentive. I do think they should served their sandwiches on larger elongated plates or basket for a nicer presentation, but that's just me. The way food is presented means a lot of me. The Super Torpedo cost $9.90. read more

Hey, if you like hearing employees gossip about other employees and you enjoy listening to employees bash-talk customers behind their backs, then come to this Filippi's, because that's what I had to endure while waiting for my order... Apparently, the employee was complaining to another employee about how long it took a customer to order their food??? Does that customer have a learning disability, or maybe is extremely tired from a long day at work and can't think, or perhaps is going through some difficult times and can't concentrate...? Either way...who cares... the employee should just be patient and thankful that a customer came in to spend some money in this establishment! And really, if it's required that you have to know what you want right when you walk in, then warn customers, so they can at least choose to spend their hard earned money elsewhere... So ridiculous... read more
