Jim's Pizza Calumet - Thin crust

Jim's has been a family favorite since it opened in the 1970s. A couple members of my family have…read moreeven worked there at various points. Whenever I am back in town, I have to stop there to get a pizza. As for the food, the pizza is thin crust, but not cracker crust. It has a chewiness to it. The real appeal of the pizza is the sauce, which is tangy. Many pizzas I've had create sauces that are overly tomato-y and sweet. I think the secret of Jim's pizza sauce is the use of fennel seed with a saltier base. It makes the sauce more aromatic and less overwhelmingly tomato-y. Honestly, it's one of those pizzas where you start eating and then suddenly realize how full you are because you've eaten half a pizza. We typically stop there Sunday for lunch. I've discovered the biggest issue is that the restaurant is typically woefully understaffed. That's a popular time for much of the elderly population to come in so the small dining room gets full. Most of the time, there is but one teenage waitress on duty, and the poor girl has to take all orders, serve all food and drinks, answer the phone orders, handle takeout, and fill all requests as they come up. This can make service seem slow.

Just had the Jim's Special Pizza. Probably the best pizza I've ever had!…read moreA solid 10/10.

I had hoped for a locally caught Golden fried Whitefish filet unfortunately it was just a standard square fish patty , fries were okay , service was alright , ambiance left a bit to be desired. All in all the experience was a bit of a letdown. I guess I had imagined something a little more Dreamy.

A mix of mostly locals and some campers and boaters (we came by boat and parked at the Dreamland dock). Clean restaurant and bathrooms (always appreciated). We ordered the special: fried chicken with past. My husband loved the combo. The pasta sauce was soooooo goooood. Ordering that as a stand-alone dish would be a winner too. The chicken was fried very nice! The sandwich was one of their famous ones but I don't remember the name. It's the last one on the menu. Our friends love this and always come here for it. I got the whitefish. It was delicate and moist. I was a little bummed that the tartar sauce was not homemade because I bet they'd do a great job at it. Instead it was a premade sauce. Great service. Friendly atmosphere. Nice porch to sit on the rocker after dinner and chill for a bit before heading back to the boat. Did I mention how cool- and unique - a public dock that takes you to a restaurant on the Portage is?! 10 points for that alone!
