This use to be the only place in Hollister but most folks who live here haven't been here more than 10 years so they wouldn't know. They play movies that are just about to go on dvd and this place actually got bought out by the same guy who owns Premiere Cinemas (the only other movie theatre in Hollister) There use to be one other place on San Benito St. like this one called Showcase Theatre but it burned down at least 15 years ago.

Just have to find the time to see their shows. Their production of Monty Python's "Spamalot" in March 2013 was absolutely hilarious. I now know what I've been missing and will try to see more productions. This is also the first time I've been inside the Granada since they stopped showing feature films. Certainly a great place for plays.

My daughter has been taking dance lessons at this studio for about a year now, I feel I have had…read moreenough experience to finally write a review! My children are homeschooled, so the bulk of their peer relationships are built through the extra curricular activities that we choose for them and I don't put them into sports or classes out of pure convenience. When deciding to buy our home, one of the first things I did was look into dance studios up to a 50 (yes 50) mile radius. Once I saw that this studio puts on an annual production of the Nutcracker, I was instantly intrigued. I know the level of work and commitment it takes to put on a show with so many moving pieces, and not many dance studios are willing to take on that challenge. Right away we felt welcomed by both the staff and many of the "veteran families" who have been there for years. I love the fact that many of the teachers and helpers are young ladies who have danced with the studio since they were my daughters age, I think that speaks to the level of dance education that the studio provides. It also gives the very youngest dancers something to look forward to and wonderful role models to look up to. The owner and artistic director, Laura, has extensive training in both dance and education. She takes her craft VERY seriously and brings a level of structure and classroom standard that I think is important for any young athlete. That is NOT to say she lacks decorum, in fact the opposite is true. There are clear rules set within each class that ensure both the growth and (most importantly) safety of your dancer as well as those around him or her. Laura has ensured that there are straightforward expectations set which makes it easy for the children to learn and grow without the constant boundary testing that you see in many of the younger dance classes . In the past year my daughter has grown by leaps and bounds as a dancer and she's made so many wonderful friends. Another thing that I love is that each class introduces the children to proper dance terminology, pertinent to the particular style of dance being taught. Even the tiniest dancers are introduced to french ballet vocabulary and that is something that I really appreciate. When you walk in you'll likely be greeted by Lupe or Alisa, who both work in the front office to keep everything running smoothly. They are two of the sweetest people that you'll ever meet and truly do all that they can to get your child (and your family) woven into the fabric of the studio. Whether you need someone to help you with proper sizing, classroom placement, or have any questions at all these two ladies are available and eager to help. My daughters favorite teacher so far has been Ms. Chelcie, who is just wonderful and truly has the patience of Job. Like, really... Bless her, because I don't know that I could handle a classroom full of kindergartners with the level of tact and care that she does. I could go on and on about how impressed I've been with the level of dance education and the welcoming atmosphere that I've felt here at SBDA, but I realize that my review is already too long and I appreciate those of you who have hung in there LOL! I'll end in saying that my family has been so blessed by the relationships we've built and the character building that has happened within my daughters classes.

SBDA not only called me back, they accepted me with open arms and encouraged and nurtured my newfound love for dance! I now take 4 1/2 hours a week and this February 9 will be my 1 year anniversary. I've been in one recital and even was in The Nutcracker this past Christmas! Everyone is wonderful there! Ms Lara, Ms Casandra, Ms Chelcea, Ms Sara, Ms Stephanie, Ms Paula and Ms Lupe; I love them all! Thank you all for allowing me to dance! It makes me so, so happy :)

The cast was excellent but I must afford a huge shout out to Roberta V who frankly carries the entire production herself. I judge performances by how invested I become watching, and Roberta had me from the first moments and never let go. Beyond that, her ability to shift perspectives on a dime, emotional outbursts and overall believability was well beyond the typical playhouse efforts. We loved every moment, and were shocked at how fantastic the entire production was. Please plan to see this before it closes, and we will see all of others as the season marches on.

Half of the Community Center was for the stage and the other half was art on display. The play itself wasn't that great. Most of the actors (5/6) were awesome, but it just wasn't that great of a story line. It is a local theater that doesn't receive sponsors or grants. La Pastorela by El Teatro Campesino, is the classic shepard's tale of good triumphing over evil…read more Luis Valdez has provided the central coast with wonderful plays for many many years, and this production is right up there. The playhouse, located in bucolic San Juan Bautista, was sold out. The play lasts about 80 minutes with no intermission. The physical layout was as a theater in the round with 4 tiers of seating surrounding the raised center stage. However much of the action was all throughout the theater. While primarily in Spanish, there was a sprinkling of English to assist the non-Spanish-speakers in understanding the plot. The leading actors were female with Luzbel being striking in her costume, acting and singing. As was San Michael the Archangel. Speaking of singing, there was a lot of it and it sounded good. The symbolism was well scripted and enjoyable to behold. One part of the play that brought a smile to my face with memories was the use of a Pachuco and zooters from Luis's "Zoot Suit". A live trio provided great accompaniment to the play, never being too loud. This is a Christmas play that has seen many adaptations here, as well as around the Latino community, It is a biannual production for ETC, alternating with "La Virgen del Tepeyac", so you'll want to catch it before it closes on 21DEC25. However, in a dynamic clash of good against evil, San Miguel, the Archangel, and an army of angels overpower the demonic powers of Luzbel and the shepherds are at last free to complete their journey. An adaptation of "La Pastorela" based on a traditional version from San Luis Potosi in Mexico was originally created in 1975 by Luis Valdez and premiered first as a puppet show. The original script was provided by Longina Montoya of Hollister, CA. The play was later transformed into a street theater spectacle from 1977-79 before settling as a play performed inside Mission San Juan Bautista. In 1991, it was adapted into a film starring Linda Ronstadt and Cheech Marin, becoming El Teatro Campesino's first feature length film, and in 2019 "La Pastorela" was performed inside the ETC Playhouse for the first time. "La Pastorela" has been performed in San Juan Bautista biannually during the holiday season, alternating with "La Virgen del Tepeyac" - making these holiday productions ETC's longest running tradition.

This might be the only Chicano owned theatre company left in America. The playhouse is inside and old packing house and has that historic aura that takes you back to the Chicano theater days of the 1960s. There is now a historical timeline in the rear of the building that highlights all of the work they have done up to 2016. We went to see the play about Carlota and the actors were amazing! The set design, lighting and costumes were top notch. I wish I lived closer and I would come way more. Please come and support wonderful local theater.
