The building (built by the owner's grandfather) has been beautifully restored and maintains historic charm and character while incorporating every modern amenity. Ashley, at the desk, was incredibly helpful, suggesting sites to visit, excellent places to eat, and even helping with our luggage. The rates were quite reasonable, especially for the excellent location (between the historic area and the campus of the College of William & Mary). We just had an all too quick one night stay and cannot rave about this wonderful place enough. The excellent service began with advance emails from owner Billy giving detailed directions to their convenient free parking. The location of the inn could not be more perfect - adjacent to the historical area and close to many great restaurants. Our "George Washington" room was fabulous! Sometimes staying in an old historic building means dealing with dated rooms. Everything in our room was updated, thoughtful, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Lots of wonderful little touches. The four poster bed was very comfortable and the shower excellent. The wifi worked great and there were lots of convenient plugs, There is a nice lounge area with a lovely adjacent terrace and snacks and tea and coffee available along with a nice continental breakfast. We were there on a Monday night so not all restaurants were open but we enjoyed visits to Precarious, Amber Ox, Mellow Mushroom and Aromas. This is a nice place, but not the best-suited to anyone who is vegan, or needs accessibility. It is only second floor; no elevator. Parking (ALWAYS tight, in Williamsburg!) is a block away, in a lot...which makes it difficult to carry equipment & luggage. No on-site personnel, except in the morning & early afternoon. It is downtown, & an easy walk to everything there. I only stayed one night; on my way to Richmond. The George Washington room (#1) is closest to the stairs & dining area. They had one serving of almond milk, which was all I needed, fortunately. I called ahead to see if they had it, & was told they did. The breakfast hostess, however, told me they didn't....until she "checked". read more

The location is great with plenty of food choices steps away but please stop calling it a B&B. They stopped cooking with COVID and decided not to anymore. Continental breakfast but nothing hot, bagels and waffles (I think) and bread served from individual bags but you can toast them. Single serve boxes of cereal too. Have had better continental at roadside hotels. Rooms are small but clean. If you don't like lugging luggage up a flight of stairs this place isn't for you. Parking is ok. read more

This was such a good choice for a quick weekend getaway for our first wedding anniversary! They are super flexible with checking in and we had no problem receiving our room card (which was taped to the door) upon our arrival a little after 11pm on a Friday evening. This practice may seem a little unsafe in a more urban area, but it works here. We were able to park in the lot that is cady corner with 6 reserved spots for the inn. In the morning at breakfast we were able to "officially" check-in, although there was little to do since we paid in advance. The location is probably the largest pro of staying at the inn! There are several restaurants and shops within less than 5 minutes walking distance, and the historic area is also about a 5 minute walk away. We were even able to walk to the Visitor's Center to pick up our tickets, which is about a mile from the inn. We never had to use our car once during our stay! Breakfast was also super handy to have available, although I wish the hours were a little later than 8-9am. There were always ham biscuits, regular biscuits, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, OJ, coffee, tea, and a rotating breakfast casserole. One day it was a quiche-like dish and the other it was a blueberry french toast. Lemonade and cookies as well as bagged snacks are always available in the breakfast room throughout the day as is coffee and tea. Unlike a couple of other B&Bs we stayed in before, there was no "happy hour" with wine, snack, etc. It did not bother me, per se, because I'm pregnant and can't drink, but I know I did appreciate it at our past stays as a nice way to relax before venturing out again for the evening. Billy, one of the proprietors, was always at breakfast making sure everyone was doing well and was quick to offer suggestions on sights to see or places to go if you did not already have plans. During our first breakfast, he was very helpful in pointing out highlights of the historic area and providing us with a list of the special events/tours for that day so we could plan accordingly. We stayed in the conservancy room with a canopy bed that also had the drapes to completely enclose the bed from light. There was a TV hidden in a cute birdhouse box, however, we never used it. There was also a nice claw-footed tub which we did not use either, but it was a nice touch. There were two comfy arm chairs, a seat at the end of the bed, and 2 fresh robes in the closet. The walk-in shower was all tile and very modern with a separate area for the toilet. Our room was freshened up between nights with fresh towels and toiletries. Hairdryer was provided too. I also want to add that I was easily able to cancel an extra night with no issue since I did that 30 days in advance. We originally were scheduled to depart Monday but had to switch that to Sunday and it was a breeze to do so. If we return to Williamsburg, we will definitely consider staying at the Fife & Drum Inn again as it was a fabulous location to stay for our quick weekend getaway! read more

The wife & I spent 4 days here in early June, located in the heart of the historic district sandwiched between Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary College. Ideal parking and access to all historical sites and eating establishments by foot. Accommodations are great and we'll thought out. Coffee & snacks as well as breakfast items were key to a early morning departure. I believe this was our third stay and it's quite the hidden gem. read more

We decided to come to Williamsburg literally last Tuesday. For this weekend, Friday and Saturday night. We were very lucky to find one room left at the fife and drum. It's location is ideal. Right in the middle of town. Walk to everything. The room is amazing. It's an old building so expect creaking floors. Bring white noise with you, like a small fan so it's not too quiet. We stayed in the Jamestown room and it has a remodeled beautiful shower. There is a TV inside what looks like a birdhouse but you don't need TV on vacation here. The thermostat seems locked so it is a bit warm but comfortable without blankets in bed. There are so many brunch and eateries in the area this inn does not provide actual breakfasts but if you need snacks anytime day or night, they provide granola, water, milk, juice, muffin tops, and restock everything for breakfast so you can sit at a table and with some fresh coffee and have something light. Ice machine and glasses available as well as wine glasses if you decide to have a bottle in your room (bring your bottle opener). All in all its a great place for a getaway. read more

We have never stayed in a bed & breakfast before and our experience here has made us B&B converts for life. The owners, Billy and Sharon, and staff were so friendly and helpful!! Since it was our first trip to Williamsburg, Sharon sat down with us and laid out the map to help us get our bearings and determine events and places that we didn't want to miss. Be sure to check out their website for package deals! We got 3 nights and access to three different historical areas for a great price! Our room, the Conservancy, was extremely clean and romantic!! It had a claw foot tub and a separate shower. The only draw-back was the small TV, but we were so busy touring Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown that we hardly missed it. Also, be sure to engage in conversation with the other guests at breakfast in the morning ... It will make your stay more fun and personal. Not only was it extremely clean and well taken care of, but they also catered to my allergies, and made sure we were comfortable! We spent our first night in the JamesTown room, which was stunning, and were greeted by champagne and roses, and then moved over to the Conservancy, and it was just perfect! . They made switching rooms so easy, all we did was pack up our stuff, and go for brunch. We came back, and like magic, everything was moved for us to the next room. The inn is full of history and love, and brimming with charm. The owners are incredibly kind and thoughtful. We cannot wait to come back for our anniversary and hopefully even before then If I could, I'd give it 10 stars, it was certainly a weekend we will never forget. read more

Spent Valentines weekend at the Inn and I highly recommend staying here. My husband was running a half marathon Saturday morning that started near the DeWitt Wallace Museum. So I thought I'd find a place to stay nearby so he wouldn't have to drive to the starting line. The Fife and Drum Inn turned out to be the perfect choice. We had the George Washington room at the top of the stairs it was perfect. Breakfast was great and the Inn has free parking. Once we parked our car we didn't move it until we left Sunday afternoon. We were right next to Merchants Square so we had several great places to eat, easy shopping, and the perfect walk through Colonial Williamsburg. read more

What an adorable and comfortable place! Boyfriend and I stayed here for a night but I wish we stayed longer. It's a bit hidden in the downtown area but that's part of the charm. We stayed in a room with a canopy bed, claws footed tub, and walk in shower. It was super romantic!! Right next to a cafe, shopping, and fancy restaurants too. Short walk to colonial Williamsburg and right by where general Washington puts on a daily display. Across is the main square where they have music, antique and souvineer shopping. Breakfast is included and there were a few options. The lobby has cool books on the area, cookies and lemonade. There isn't an elevator so be aware you will be carrying your suitcases up a good flight of steps. read more

We stayed in the William and Mary room, and loved the place! The Fife and Drum is attractive, clean, quiet, and comfortable. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly without being pushy, and the location-- oh the location! It is on the west end of downtown, next to the William and Mary campus. This is where the restaurants and shopping that are not official parts of the Colonial Williamsburg organization are located. This is significant to the tourist because these are most of the amenities that are open after the village closes at 5. Parking is great too. I've stayed at a number of places in the area, and this is my top pick. read more

Beautiful inn right in the central market area of Collonial Williamsburg. The staff and owners were very attentive. Owner Sharon gave us a map and spent time going over well known and hidden gems in Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, and we realized this is equidistant to both towns, so we'll be back here as a jumping off point. her family had been here for nearly a century and it shows in her knowledge. Make sure to check out colonial visitors center. The conservancy room had a great canopy bed and spacious shower. I only wish they'd replace the standalone tub, which is to small for even one person to stretch out in, with a love seat and small drinks table. The breakfast was delicious, served 8-9. personally I'd love to have it changed to 9-10 or at least 830-930, but a lot of guests here may be early birds. We really enjoyed the the tea store next door and the French restaurant Blue Talon across the street for dinner one night, and the Shields Tavern another. Good location. Stayed in the Drummers Cottage with another couple for a wedding down at the Williamsburg Community Building. After the wedding, we had a quiet night watching a couple movies and having a couple drinks. The next morning while at breakfast, we received a call from Billy making sure we didn't "have too much fun" and insisting we had more people staying there. While I'm flattered he thought we're capable of doing so, I'm pretty sure I haven't had an excessive amount of fun since college. Basically the owner was pretty rude but it was kinda appreciated because it made me feel young again. read more

I can't believe this place does not have a yelp page! This cute little Inn in Williamsburg surely enhance your colonial experience. It is somewhat hidden (because you have to walk upstairs to check in.. and not so accessible for handicapped people), but very conveniently located. Just a few blocks away from major touristy spots, and most importantly, the inn keeper is super nice. He welcomes you like your friend would welcome you in the house and gives a great advice on where to go and what to eat. The rooms are very nice as well. Each room is appropriately named with a historical figure. My sister and I stayed in the George Washington room, and the room was very clean, modern, and cozy. I don't think they offer two queen beds in one room, so you may want to think about that sort of stuff when booking this place. But, overall, very good quality and a fun place to stay. read more

Last week my sister, brother-in-law, niece, husband, and I spent 4 nights at Fife & Drum while vacationing at Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. Below is a breakdown of what I loved and recommended improvements resulting in my 3 star rating. Fantastic: Location, location, location! Fife & Drum is just a block from Market Square, 1/2 block from William & Mary, and on the same street as restaurants for all tastes. The beds! I declare the beds to be the MOST comfortable hotel beds in the country! Breakfast was consistently good. Billy, the innkeeper, was friendly and funny. Recommended improvements: New televisions! Each room has a tiny tv (I believe 13 inches) that has a built in VHS player. VHS?!?!?! Time for an upgrade. Breakfast was good but variety is the spice of life. Breakfast was exactly the same every morning-quiche, fresh fruit, bacon, biscuit, and cereal. The quiche did change daily with some being sweet and some savory. More consistent check-in process. Because we arrived after 5:00, our keys and parking pass were in an envelope taped to the entrance door (seems like there should be a safer solution since your room key also gets you into the building). We "officially" checked in the next morning after breakfast which consisted of providing credit card payment for the remainder of our stay. Night one was paid for when making the reservation. Two days later we overheard another family checking in and being told how they could save a % on their entrance to Colonial Williamsburg for staying there. We were not given that info and therefore did not take advantage of the discount. We got the wheelchair accessible room. I believe it was the only room available. Although still very nice, it was inconvenient to have the sink next to the bed rather than in the bathroom. Overall, I liked Fife & Drum and would recommend it to others. A few tweaks could make it a 5 star stay. read more

Solid four stars. This is a quaint, small inn, with a very personal feel. The walls are thin, and the rooms and bathrooms small, but that's what you'd expect, so it's not a negative (just an observation). The inn is located right on the edge of the historic area (the whole reason you'd come here), on a street with coffee shops and places to grab a bite. For that alone, this is among the best places to stay. Hosts were friendly and helpful, and included breakfast was a nice touch. In need of a quick escape from the city I decided to rent a car and travel on down to Williamsburg. I got there late in the evening and began looking for a place to stay. I could have stayed at the Quality in or something of that nature but being in Williamsburg I wanted something a bit more fitting for the occasion. After googling for hotels and seeing the reviews for this place I decided to call. Well, I am sure glad that I did. The rooms were absolutely adorable. Quaint, comfy, clean and a clear attention to little details that made my stay most enjoyable. The hotel is really unique and makes you feel like you are right at home. In the morning the owners provide you their home made breakfast and it was just lovely. The eating area is cozy and warm and the environment is so relaxing and different from your standard commercial hotel feel that talking to the other guests is common place, learning about the area from the owners and the other guests is easy as everyone is relaxed and welcoming. Of course you can stay all to yourself and snuggle up in your room or the big comfy couches in the living room area! Location is perfect as the hotel sits right on the end of the main drag and next to the merchant area where you can eat and get your tickets. I will definitely be staying there again! read more

There is a significant personal touch that you won't find at any chain hotel. The breakfast every morning is incredibly delicious, and the living room has a wonderful chess set to pass the evening time away. Colonial Williamsburg is one block away via walking; I loved exploring the town and then walking back to my suite afterward. Not having to deal with driving and parking was fantastic! The rooms are decorated in colonial style, and it's nice not having a huge television with cable to distract you from your surroundings. We also had some leftovers from dinner, so they let us store them in their kitchen refrigerator. One big plus was that they had gluten-free options for breakfast! I was so glad! I wish I could pick this place up and take it with me everywhere I travel. The rooms were adorable, beds comfortable and their attention to detail was obvious. So quaint and colonial yet not lacking any modern amenities. And the best part, the breakfast buffet! I live in DC where brunch is king and the quality of food at Fife and Drum would rival any of the most popular brunch spots here. The location is amazing, you can walk to all the restaurants and shops plus you are only one block from Duck of Gloucester St, which has all the historic buildings. The owners were so sweet and extremely helpful in planning our visit around the area. In addition to Williamsburg, we spent a day exploring Jamestown, which is just 9 miles away. The one thing I would say is if you have someone in your party who absolutely can't do stairs, you might (unfortunately) go elsewhere. All rooms are on the second floor so you have to go up one set of stairs. Not a problem for 99% of people but maybe for senior citizens. Also, there is no "front desk" that is manned 24/7 so if you need anything after 5 p.m. or so, you will call the owners who live just 2 minutes away. I highly recommend Fife and Drum and look forward to staying there again in the future. You will pay the same as you would for a national chain hotel but get such a better experience for your money! read more

Well I can start by saying that my review has nothing to do with the stay, because unfortunately I was not able to keep my reservation there without paying more than the quoted price. So here is the situation. I am currently deployed to the Middle-East and wanted to plan a trip to Williamsburg during the Christmas season for my family. I got on the Fife and Drum website, saw that my dates were available and proceeded to book the room and pay the deposit. When I ultimately received my booking confirmation a couple days later and I noticed that the price was over $125 higher than originally quoted. So I contacted Billy and he told me that he was sorry they did not contact me before charging me, but their website price for one of the days were wrong so they billed me at what it should have been, not what I was quoted. To my credit when I made the reservation it was for Thursday ($189) and then Friday and Saturday were both $325 I think. I sort of expected him to offer to waive the extra cost since it was their website/reservation calendar that was wrong, but instead his only option was to pay a price that was not posted or he would refund my money and I could stay somewhere else. Not that the extra money was a factor, but I can't do business with someone who puts the burden of cost on a customer for a mistake they made. I myself own a small business and once I give a quote, that is what is paid, regardless of what my mistake was. I am sure because they are right near Colonial Williamsburg, they have all the business they want, so taking care of the customer is not as important as the extra 100 bucks that they would have gotten. I likely would have been a repeat loyal customer because I support small businesses but I will just have to support someone else from now on when I go to Williamsburg. read more

The location is perfect if you are planning to visit Colonial Williamsburg or William & Mary - it is literally right in the middle of the two and within walking distance to each. The inn itself is bright and clean. The room was cute and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. Billy was also very helpful with information about touring the area. We came here for our anniversary. It was amazing. We are not super sociable and we were very lucky, as nobody else was staying and we had the whole place to ourselves. The staff person showed us around, answered all our questions and then gave us the passcode and left us there. This was a dream come true! We enjoyed a snowy night with a roaring fire, cookies and a whole colonial house to ourselves. We stayed in the Conservancy, and it was beautiful, clean and so welcoming and relaxing. The next morning, the staff was already making a delicious breakfast for us (sourthern fare). They were polite and welcoming, but not too talkative. It was perfect. read more

What a gem!! We were looking for a romantic weekend getaway in Colonial Williamsburg, and stumbled upon this little Bed & Breakfast. The location was everything!! Within walking distance to the shops at Merchants Square and a plethora of restaurants and taverns, we never once moved our car from the parking garage. The owners, Billy & Sharon Scruggs immediately welcomed us upon arrival. They were so accommodating & just a wonderful and most friendly couple. We stayed in the Washington room. The room was decorated in quintessential Colonial style, very clean and offered a large modern shower. The common area was kept clean and inviting. Billy & Sharon were always around to provide conversation. There were snacks and drinks along with fresh coffee & hot tea available 24hrs. The homemade granola in the cute mason jars was out of this world topped on the yogurt! Because of COVID restrictions, the hot breakfast buffet was understandably not provided, but Sharon still offered individually wrapped goodies. There's a quaint little college coffee shop called Aroma's right next door that offered a fantastic breakfast and superb coffees. Dinner at the Blue Talon across the street also did not disappoint. I can't say enough about how great this place is! Definitely will be returning!! read more

This is a great place to stay if you want to be walking distance from the historic area. Terrific breakfast buffet and very friendly staff. The room itself however was not as comfortable as desired with a lot of space being taken up by a worthless bathtub rather than a sofa and table and the canopy bed was high and so close to the wall that getting in and out was difficult.Located above stores, the staircase to the hotel is quite steep which is something to consider if you have mobility issues. But you can't beat the location and free parking!! read more

The comfy bed led to epic naps, the robes were cozy and the location is perfect for exploring the campus or Colonial Williamsburg. We plan to return to the Cedars Suite and the back porch very soon.
