First time eating here and I had high hopes, I really did. We rolled up at 5pm during the week and we were the only ones there for about 30 minutes, which told me it was a sign. Margaritas were decent.....tequila was all the way oj the bottom though and by the time you got there, it was watered down. The food. I got the chipotle chicken enchiladas....they were $13.75, and while the sauce was good, the chicken was dry!!! Also, the rice was hard....like it had been sitting uncovered for a while. Not impressed and won't go back.

This is what they consider to be "large" shrimp.

This place used to be one of my favorite places to eat....until they robbed me. I brought my cousin from Texas to lunch here and I was in great spirits to show him some good Mexican food since it's hard to find here compared to the motherland (Texas). I ordered my usual, Pollo Chipotle, and I asked if I could have a mix of shrimp and chicken since they a Camarón Chipotle as well. I said, "can you do a mix of both? Maybe a little less chicken but then add the shrimp"? I said "If I have to pay a little more, that will be okay". The waiter then asks "how many shrimp"? I was like...."What? Heck I don't know.....5"? I was truly confused because who knows how many shrimp they would put in, in lieu of the chicken they normally put into the dish. Right? Well, my cousins says, "wow, that sounds good, I'll try the same". Soon, they bring the food and it looked just as expected, less chicken but with exactly 5 pieces of shrimp. The food tasted good as usual. Then the tab arrives.....they charged me $3 dollars for EVERY shrimp!!! I then went to speak to the owner and he said that it was considered a "side". One shrimp? One shrimp is considered a side? How will that look like.....they bring you a plate and put ONE SHRIMP in the middle?!! They charged me $30 total for 10 quarter size pieces of shrimp. Then the owner pretends to NOT be the owner and says "it's just the way the owners have it in the system and I can't do nothing about it"; apparently he forgot that we had met before, however, he said, "YOU should have asked how much the side was". It's not even listed as a side in their menu and the waiter never mentioned that it was a "side" and he definitely didn't mention that it was $3 a piece for what they consider to be "large" quarter size piece of shrimp. The bill came out to over $70 for what used to be a $30 lunch for 2 people. I paid it and called them out for the thieves they are. They robbed me of $30 dollar and lost my families business forever. Diablos, no sé.....5"?

Went here with my family for my moms birthday! Food was really good. Margaritas were good. Their Spanish rice is so good!! Service was great. We asked for some hotter salsa & they did NOT disappoint with the hotter salsa! I'm glad they gave us some warning on it. It was extreme for me but two members of my group really liked it. Would go here again.

It's one of those places where you don't feel like you're sacrificing quality just because it's discounted. The happy hour menu itself is a win too. Great variety, everything came out quick, and the portions were better than most places offering "deals." You can actually make a full meal out of it without spending much. Service was on point, attentive without hovering, and the overall vibe made it easy to relax and stay a while. If you're looking for a spot with real value during happy hour, this is it. Definitely coming back.

Yes! Finally a Mexican place in the Boise area that I can rate 5-stars. This is no "Sysco…read moreMexican" place where sitting down means you get a basket of chips and saucers of jar salsa and pinto-lard puree. You can taste the Oaxacan and Tex-Mex origins of the food. I prefer Oaxacan over Tex-Mex. Flavorful, with depth, and leaves you wanting to come back. Service was decent as it was busy. The ambiance is more of a modern restaurant than a tacky Tijuana vomit vest. The dia de los meurtos vibe is pretty cool. Ceviche was fresh and flavorful. While I like a little white fish in it as well, their ceviche was the best I've had since spending time down in the Yucatan. The freshly prepared tortilla chips are crisp and built to scoop. Their regular salsa is very good as well. Personal taste, but I would like a little more roast on the peppers for a deeper flavor. You know, like you get when peppers are directly placed on hot coals to roast. The birria flautas were crispy and the meat was spot on in terms of flavor and perfectly cooked pork. I had a couple bites of the surf and turf tacos - bam! So good. Their home cooked churros with the churro fried ice cream were absolutely perfect. The ice cream coating, I would give 4-stars as the exterior was a bit chewy in texture for me. It was almost as if there oats used to hold it together. Yeah, we'll be back.

My wife ordered a chile rellano and an enchilda. I ordered camarones diabla, one of my favorite dishes. My wife had a coke and I had water. My wife really enjoyed her food, and there was plenty of it, as she brought some home. In my dish, the shrimp were nice and plump, which was great, and the sauce was flavorful, though not as good as at another place I frequent. There were small pieces of mushroom, but there were also a lot of strips of onion, which I'm not a fan of. Just my personal taste. They charge $3.50 for a soda, and for that price, my wife asked for a refill to go. She thought our server was perhaps a bit displeased that she made this request, but we feel that it is reasonable, given the price tag for soda that comes from a machine. All in all, we enjoyed our experience at La Cabanita, and will return, we happen to be in the area (we live in Star).
