The very tall teapots are a nice touch. Our server was very personable, helped with deciding what to order, not rushing us. Food was good, but nothing stood out. Competently prepared from fresh ingredients, very big portions. It is a great place for a big group of friends, as the menu is huge, they have everything, and even with our company of people with quite various food requirements we easily got a very satisfactory dinner. This has been my go-to DoorDash spot for lunch, and I've ordered from here many times before. Unfortunately, this time was a big disappointment. I ordered the Mongolian beef as usual, but it was extremely spicy--way beyond what I could tolerate. It has never been this spicy in the past, and there's no option to select a spice level on the menu. I'm not sure if the ownership changed or if there's a new chef, but something is definitely different. I used to really enjoy their food, and this was a letdown. The current kitchen staff is operating on autopilot--and I'm fairly certain the autopilot is set to "Mildly Flavorful." The restaurant is now simply an echo of the quality that once drew a dedicated following. The Culinary Crime Scene: Suanni Bairou The most egregious offense on my latest visit was the Suanni Bairou (Sliced Pork with Garlic Sauce). This is a dish that should sing with fresh garlic, fragrant chili oil, and perfectly cooked pork. What arrived, however, was a visual metaphor for my own broken heart: The pork was... present. The sauce, intended to be a vibrant, complex symphony, tasted like someone asked an intern to Google, "What do Chinese people put on pork?" and they only got as far as "Soy Sauce + Garlic." Seriously, the flavor was so muted, so fundamentally wrong, that I had to restrain myself from asking the waiter for a spoon and a packet of chili crisps just to give the poor thing a fighting chance. I guarantee you, my own attempt at this dish on a Tuesday night using whatever condiments are hiding in my fridge is more authentically Sichuan than what FEY is serving right now. It's not just that it was bad; it was the tragic loss of a dish that was once legendary. Final Verdict: A Nostalgia Trap Look, FEY isn't actively offensive--it's just soul-crushingly mediocre, especially when you measure it against the history we know it briefly shared. If you are just looking for A Chinese meal, it will technically fill you up. But if you come here expecting the Little Sichuan legend, you'll be profoundly disappointed and possibly weep into your noodles. Some of my favorites dishes include their steamed fish, stir fry eggplant, and spicy beef tendon . I also like their salt and pepper tofu, yang zhou fried rice, grilled cumin lamb skewers, egg drop soup. My boyfriend likes their hong shao rou, and the The service is good. I don't feel like we ever wait too long to order or get the bill. The wait staff speaks both English and Chinese so if you prefer speaking in Chinese there's always that option. The interior is nice. It feels like a traditional fancy Chinese restaurant. They have pretty light fixtures and sculptures on the wall. We usually sit in one of the booths, but they also have family-style seating in the back (big round tables with a lazy Susan). We tried this restaurant after hearing about it on Nextdoor. We've had a hard time finding an Asian restaurant that we love after losing our favorite last year. Before we even ate, we were impressed - the menu is astonishingly big, the ordering online was easy, the communication about our order was well done and the packing of our food was better than any others we've picked up from other restaurants. We tried the potstickers (excellent, but needed more spice in the filling); green onion pancakes (nicely done if a bit oily; the dry green beans - excellent; the hot and sour soup - excellent; the cold noodle salad - loved it; Chinese chicken salad - also excellent. I have been looking for good Szechuan in the South Bay, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! The spicy fried fish fillet was perfectly flavorful, crispy, not too greasy, and had just the right kick to it. The Beijing style eggplant dish was also delicious. Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house no food in the fridge not even a sprout. I called Fey as it was still open in hopes of filling my tummy with nothing frozen. I ordered the beef tofu with great care but disappointed the beef was mediocre to even share. The tofu and sauce was pretty tasty but the rice on the side was rather hasty. It was dull and dry, not soft and fluffy it didn't leave an impression and made me huffy. I would recommend their stir fry snow pea leaves, Chinese yam, pork knuckle, and fish fillet. They also have a Sweet Soup Mochi dessert soup which has glutinous rice balls filled with black sesame paste in a rice wine soup. When I finally ordered through snackorder or some other electronic ordering system, the order went through fine. As the owner of the company herself, to treat your customers the way we got treated was completely unacceptable. And I know we will not be the only ones getting treated like this especially because you are not denying you are making excuses. Not once did you apologize or make us feel comfortable. You were not accommodating. We were grateful for the switch in one of the plates BUT you went ahead and tried to swindle your way in making us pay more at the end. As for tipping, We had been going there for years and have always always always given a good tip. Especially each time we have went to your restaurant we were in a group of 8-10+. In the past we got charged a service fee AND we always added an additional tip. If you really knew that and recognized us you'd know that statement is false. But I understand that is the only thing you can say at the moment. To be demanding us to pay a "suggested tip" - noticing the word suggested and yelling at your customers about having to leave one is absolutely unacceptable. You are even accepting you charged us a 18% tip due to consistent no tip in the past. Which is completely false BUT even to set the example for other customers you are stating that just because a customer doesn't choose to pay a tip (maybe due to financial reasons or their experience or etc.) that they can expect an 18% service charge no matter the size of the party the next time they visit your restaurant ?? Overall this is a great and well decorated Chinese restaurant for a majority of palates in the local area. I have tried this place a few times and I would say I enjoyed the lunch combos, hot and sour soup, & BBQ Chow Mein the most out of the dishes I have ordered. The Mongolian beef was decent, and the beef noodles were a bit on the chewy side. There's a small parking lot in the back so you don't have to worry about El Camino street parking. Upon walking in, we were seated right away on a Saturday night for a party of 3. There were plenty of tables and even a small private room in the back for more seating. This place was definitely bigger than it looks from the outside! Lots of menu options. We often pass this restaurant during our walks. Finally ordered dinner favorites that we've had at other restaurants. Noodles were just okay. The rest of the items definitely not worth the price! Won ton soup was overpacked with spinach and alters what good won ton soup should taste like! Mongolian was tough and chewy. Pork belly was under cooked and hidden under red chili sauce.
