I had to reach out and give a very positive review for Dr. Cruz. After my dog broke her leg and required surgery, I was given a list of affordable veterinary resources. Unfortunately, my experience at the surgery center in Los Angeles was all-around awful, and I deeply regret it. Recently, I was calling around this low-cost list, inquiring about dental cleanings for my fur babies. I called a number listed as a affordable veterinary referral service . A nice gentleman answered. He began educating me on dental care for dogs, and his knowledge was impressive. After our conversation, I texted him asking if he had any resources for orthopedic specialists, as I thought my dog might need revision surgery. He asked to see her X-rays and provided a consultation on them. Curious about his familiarity with canine bones and X-rays, I asked how he knew so much. He revealed that he is actually a DVM with experience in fracture repairs. I had no idea I was speaking to a veterinarian with orthopedic experience! I was truly impressed by his thoughtfulness, care, generosity with his time, and trustworthiness. I've shared Dr. Cruz's contact information with several individuals in crisis with their fur babies. Dr. Cruz is a truly kind and caring individual , and I have no doubt he is an amazing veterinarian and surgeon. Thank you, Dr. Cruz, for your incredible help in my baby's recovery ‍ read more

We have the pleasure of having Dr. Cruz as our vet for our two under-two Boxers. We've moved a few times in the past few years and had a handful of vets in each new city. I can confidently share that Dr. Cruz has been the most caring, informative, and empathetic vet we've had. He goes above-and-beyond during our visits. We don't ever feel rushed in the exam rooms, pressured to buy exams, nor shamed when asking questions as first-time doggy parents. Dr. Cruz's care is relational, not transactional, and we are more than grateful to have him on our care team. read more

We got the pleasure of having Dr. Cruz check my cat, Patches this past weekend. I was able to get an appointment quickly even though this appointment was only for a prescription for flea treatment. He's an indoor cat, but our area is near the San Bruno mountains where lots of wildlife surrounds us. So we need flea meds and the over the counter meds were not working. He was very thorough for our first consultation visit. He spent an hour going through my cat's history and what we needed to watch out for in the future. He doesn't pressure you in having unnecessary treatments like X-rays or blood work done. He's personable and knowledgeable. Very glad to have found Dr. Cruz on Yelp. We've been searching for years for a good vet. Hoping our search has finally ended. read more

Dr. Cruz helped me find a vet that would do FHO on his right hip on my cat Sunny who had just had surgery on his left side! Then 2 months later it was his right side. I had already put out $4000. I was beside myself. I just started calling any agency I could get a hold of which there aren't many for cats. I don't even know how I got his number but he called me back right away and asked me what could I pay and he found Ambassador Hospital in Long Beach They took care of Sunny the whole staff was great! Mind you I live in San Juan Capistrano. Thank you so very very much. read more

I was looking to get my dog spayed asap and the vet clinic I was previously going to was way too overpriced and they couldn't schedule my dog for another week or so. A friend recommended Dr. Cruz to us and when I called he was able to see my dog the same day for a blood test and was able to spay her the very next day! Dr. Cruz and his staff were so nice, they were informative and professional, and their prices didn't break the bank. When we picked our dog up from the surgery, Dr. Cruz checked in on her recovery progress periodically which gave us such peace of mind, especially in the first 24hrs. I was able to ask him about any concerns I may have had in real time which was so helpful. My dog is healing beautifully thanks to Dr. Cruz and it's safe to say we are making the switch. read more

We've been to 3 different veterinary hospitals in the last 4mo and Dr. Fernando Cruz has provided us with the most transparent, compassionate, and affordable care out of all of them. He has done an amazing job helping my service animal, Little Man, to breath easier and be a lot more comfortable. He's very accessible, responsive, and equitable; qualities that provide peace of mind regarding veterinary care. We've seen Dr. Cruz a bunch of times at Colma Animal Hospital and he's been pretty straightforward and honest about his assessment of my dogs' issues. We've brought our maltese to him twice for bouts of diarrhea from colitis, and our (older) poodle mix for more complex issues (once for a fecal issue and again for a bleeding mole). Especially with our older dog's issues, he has been great about not being trigger happy about initiating expensive procedures and is pretty conservative in his approach with prescribing medication. With the fecal issue, he took time to figure out the problem and even called me on the weekend as soon as the lab findings came in. Overall, we've had good experiences with him but sad to see he doesn't seem to be at Colma ANimal Hospital anymore? read more

Been to a few vets due to moving probably our 4th vet in past 15 years. Left oceana recently due to very rude techs and poor management of my animals and few other customers animals. Wow Dr. Cruz is very personalized and caring to each owner/ pet. Willing to listen and be patient instead of trying to run out of the room like a lot of vets and pass of to their techs. Feel great to have a vet give you a personal line when you need it and cares for your well being and your wallet. He is super busy but he still will reply when he can later in the night before bed. Definitely staying with him for as long as i can. 10/10 read more

Dr Cruz is one of the best veterinarians in the Bay Area! He is compassionate, understanding, and he really really cares. When my dog injured herself, and might require a FHO surgery, Dr Cruz patiently explained what's going on with her hip bone, explained the risks(she is a senior dog) that might be involved with a surgery and gave me all the options. He never tried to pressure into making a "sale" but instead he wholeheartedly wanted what's best for my fury friend. I would trust him to operate on me. Do not look further! Dr. Cruz is truly amazing! Captain is my first puppy and when I took her to her first vet visit, she was very calm because of Dr. Cruz. She got all her vaccinations like it was nothing. Like everyone else, I'm a paranoid parent. Since she's my first puppy, I worried about everything but Dr. Cruz answered all my questions patiently; from medical to behavioral. He even called after business hours for Captain's fecal test result. Captain was tested positive for giardia and as a first time parent, I didn't know what it meant and what to do, but Dr. Cruz told me not to worried and provided all the options with no hidden cost. She's recovered within a week with the prescribed medication. During the pandemic, I want to limit of going out as much as possible but Captain needs her monthly dose flea and ticks prevention and as she's growing, her weight changes. I asked Dr. Cruz if I needed to bring Captain in just for them to weight her and he was so understanding and thoughtful and just provide the prescription without unnecessary questions. I highly recommend him to anyone and thank you so much Dr. Cruz! read more

I was taking my 7 mo old English bulldog puppy to a vet in San José and they let me down in a big way. My puppy has a problem with his urethra prolapseing. And they wanted me to take him to a specialist that was going to cost me a butt load for something that could of been done in clinic. I called my breeder and asked her where she took the puppies and her dogs and she directed me to Dr. Cruz. I was amazed how fast he was able to work me in to be seen and then we formed a plan to help my little guy. Dr. Cruz then gave me his phone number and said if I have any problems just text him,and he has even gone out of his way to make sure my puppers has been ok with recovery. Dr. Cruz is amazing. We rescued a puppy that we found out had grade 4 luxating patella. Every vet gave us an estimate of over $6,000. Yeesh! Dr.Cruz is such a caring and observant vet. We initially brought our dog, Marty, for a teeth cleaning and right when we placed Marty on the table, Dr.Cruz noticed that something was wrong with his back knees as well. He told us that he will take a look at Marty's knees once he was under anesthesia and let us know if he would need surgery. I really appreciated how honest and ethical Dr.Cruz was. What makes him stand out from other vets we've been to was that didn't try to push us into doing any unnecessary procedures or add unwanted fees to our bill. He also gave us suggestions on supplements and changes we should make to help prevent Marty's knees from getting worse instead of just prescribing meds upon meds to rack up the bill the way other vets would've. A day after Marty's cleaning, he even sent a follow up message to check on how Marty was doing. You can tell that Dr.Cruz is very knowledgeable and cares for his patients. read more

I would just like to personally thank Dr. Cruz. He helped me throughout the entirety of my French bulldogs pregnancy. By far, Dr. Cruz is the only person that was patient in answering my questions and able to help me with my aggressive cat. I've had my cat for several years and just recently, he started to lash out at me. His behavioral problems seemed to get worst. I was immediately shocked that they took me in right away last minute. Dr. Cruz listened to me and understood that I wanted to find a solution that didnt involve wasting money on countless tests. We started going down a list of possible solutions to help solve my cat's behavioral issues. I couldnt be more happier with the way Dr. Cruz helped me. This was my first time going to Colma Animal Hospital and I've decided to take ALL my animals here. No regrets! Dr. Cruz and his team at Colma Animal Hospital cared for my 16 year old cat as if she was there own. I cannot speak more highly of a professional, caring and communicative veterinarian than Dr. Cruz. I was referred to his practice by a UCSF medical school classmate and I am forever grateful and thankful that that connection was made. I started taking my cat, Ashely, to him so that he could remove plaque from her teeth or remove the teeth if need be. However, during these months I noticed, Ashley, who had kidney problems from old age, had stopped eating and drinking. In contacting Dr. Cruz and Colma Animal Hospital, they were able to fit her into their busy schedule and I was able to take Ashley the next day to be seen. This was incredibly helpful because of my rotation schedule. In the weeks that Ashley was seen during this illness, I was able to coordinate dropping her off and picking her up with Dr. Cruz and the staff. They are incredibly understanding and caring about the pet and the pet owner as well. Dr. Cruz guided me along during Ashley's illness by informing me of the possible diagnoses and tests he could run and communicated to me results in a way I could understand them. He also helped me make informed decisions about her care. When she wasn't eating, he would personally syringe feed her food to make sure she got enough nutrition. When she needed blood transfusions, Dr. Cruz personally arranged for other feline donors to give blood to her. He took care of her and loved her as if she were his own cat. In the end, Dr. Cruz was there and helped me make the difficult decision to put her to sleep. Though this is not the outcome anyone would hope for their cat, I am so glad that Dr. Cruz and his entire office were the ones to help me along the journey. I am forever indebted to Dr. Cruz and Colma Animal Hospital. When I am ready to have another cat or other animal, I will most certainly be going back to establish care with Dr. Cruz and Colma. I encourage anyone who is searching for a vet to make the trip to Colma because you won't be disappointed. I live in the Haight in SF and would gladly make the trip to see this fabulous, talented, professional and caring group of veterinarians! I cannot thank them enough and though I miss Ashley every day, I can actually smile when I think about the end of her life because she was in such good hands! read more

My mother-in-law's beloved pug (Julian) had been sick for several days with a sinus issue that didn't get better. We looked around for a veterinarian nearby and came across Colma Animal Hospital and were pleasantly surprised that they were able to set an appointment the same day. They were attended by Dr. Cruz who surprised them by being bi-lingual in Spanish and very personable. Dr. Cruz took them to the room and immediately saw the severity of Julian's issue and rushed him back to take x-rays and run some tests. He kept them informed and discovered that he had an infection in his larynx that was preventing him from breathing and gave them some options on how to fix it. Dr. Cruz set my family at ease to proceed with fixing the problem, he made sure they understood what was going on and next steps for follow up. Probably one of my favorite veterinarians. Dr Cruz has a good sense of humor and is extremely knowledgeable in the field. We have a crazy cat that needed to be vaccinated for rabies and get a booster shot. Most vets would recommend sedating her, but Dr Cruz used the old towel over the cat trick to calm her and quickly administer the vaccines without any mess! The last vet irritated my cat and she ended up peeing in her carrier. Not fun. If I weren't moving, I'd keep going to Dr Cruz for my vet needs. read more

I signed up for yelp just for Dr Cruz b/c I TRUST HIM W/MY PET! He TRULY CARES & PERSONALLY FOLLOWS UP W/POST SURGERY RECOVERY. He's very knowledgeable,TAKES TIME TO ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS & explained my dog's health issues(she had 2 lumps & overweight). Lumps removed on short notice & did a great job. I was surprised(& appreciative) when he called w/post surgery update. Upon pick up, he brought her out & took time to explain & answer questions. My dog was in alot of pain 1st night & next day it was very easy to get ahold of him. He gave alternate pain med. I thought I would not see him when I picked up pain med(just pick up at front desk) but he spoke to me & asked if I had more questions. He has never made me feel like I am bugging him or taking up his time, that is rare. Most vets do the surgery and that is the end of their responsibilities. Not Dr. Cruz! He has been involved every step of the way & genuinely cares about the recovery of my dog. It also important to mention that he actually cares about the owners. By taking his time to check on the dog's recovery and being available to address any concerns/questions, it really eases my mind. He has checked in with me regularly for updates on her pain level and how the stitches are healing. That personal touch is worth more than gold. Im sure there are alot of knowledgeable vets around, but its a rare, precious thing to find a vet who personally follows up with the post surgery recovery of their patients. We are waiting for biopsy results, so of course I am worried. The bright spots is knowing Dr. Cruz is available and ACTUALLY WANTS TO HELP & ANSWER QUESTIONS and I trust that he will contact me as soon as the biopsy results are available. That alleviates a lot of stress. I know he is very busy & that my dog is not his only patient, but the way he takes time and personally checks on her progress sure makes me feel like we are his only concern! I've always had pets & always taken them to a vet regularly. With all my vet experience, I fell confident in saying that Dr Cruz is the best!! I went to this vet at Colma Animal Hospital to get my dog's eye checked out last year in June since I wanted to try out a different vet at the same place. He seemed nice and gave a good diagnosis. I asked him about teeth cleaning for my 8 year old maltipoo which he said he can perform. It's been a year so I wanted to get my pup's teeth cleaned and asked for an estimate. The vet called me over the phone and gave me an estimate of around $700 or so. I haven't decided if I wanted to get it done at Colma yet since it's definitely on the expensive side. The vet calls me the next day and starts referencing my yelp reviews of the hospital stating that clearly I was not happy and usually clients who are not don't go back to the place. I have written 1 star reviews regarding this place's front desk staff's rude behaviour on multiple occasions. I explained to him that I find no issues with the vets itself but just the front desk. The vets are good. I have gone to Dr.Bhakri in the past and he is very nice. He said that he hasn't read the review but he did not want to clean my dog's teeth. He is scared that I would write a bad review and kept insisting that it was a friendly call. I was definitely surprised that I got a call like this regarding the vet who clearly cares way more about getting a good yelp review rather than my business. I guess the vets can decline patients. I am surprised that instead of trying to fix that issue with the front desk or talking to them about it, the vet declines cleaning my pup's teeth and instead insists on referring me to another vet. read more
