Unfortunately, my experience at the surgery center in Los Angeles was all-around awful, and I deeply regret it. Recently, I was calling around this low-cost list, inquiring about dental cleanings for my fur babies. I called a number listed as a affordable veterinary referral service . A nice gentleman answered. He began educating me on dental care for dogs, and his knowledge was impressive. After our conversation, I texted him asking if he had any resources for orthopedic specialists, as I thought my dog might need revision surgery. He asked to see her X-rays and provided a consultation on them. Curious about his familiarity with canine bones and X-rays, I asked how he knew so much. He revealed that he is actually a DVM with experience in fracture repairs. I had no idea I was speaking to a veterinarian with orthopedic experience! We've seen Dr. Cruz a bunch of times at Colma Animal Hospital and he's been pretty straightforward and honest about his assessment of my dogs' issues. We've brought our maltese to him twice for bouts of diarrhea from colitis, and our (older) poodle mix for more complex issues (once for a fecal issue and again for a bleeding mole). Especially with our older dog's issues, he has been great about not being trigger happy about initiating expensive procedures and is pretty conservative in his approach with prescribing medication. With the fecal issue, he took time to figure out the problem and even called me on the weekend as soon as the lab findings came in. Do not look further! Dr. Cruz is truly amazing! Captain is my first puppy and when I took her to her first vet visit, she was very calm because of Dr. Cruz. She got all her vaccinations like it was nothing. Like everyone else, I'm a paranoid parent. Since she's my first puppy, I worried about everything but Dr. Cruz answered all my questions patiently; from medical to behavioral. He even called after business hours for Captain's fecal test result. Captain was tested positive for giardia and as a first time parent, I didn't know what it meant and what to do, but Dr. Cruz told me not to worried and provided all the options with no hidden cost. She's recovered within a week with the prescribed medication. During the pandemic, I want to limit of going out as much as possible but Captain needs her monthly dose flea and ticks prevention and as she's growing, her weight changes. I asked Dr. Cruz if I needed to bring Captain in just for them to weight her and he was so understanding and thoughtful and just provide the prescription without unnecessary questions. I was taking my 7 mo old English bulldog puppy to a vet in San José and they let me down in a big way. My puppy has a problem with his urethra prolapseing. We initially brought our dog, Marty, for a teeth cleaning and right when we placed Marty on the table, Dr.Cruz noticed that something was wrong with his back knees as well. He told us that he will take a look at Marty's knees once he was under anesthesia and let us know if he would need surgery. I really appreciated how honest and ethical Dr.Cruz was. What makes him stand out from other vets we've been to was that didn't try to push us into doing any unnecessary procedures or add unwanted fees to our bill. He also gave us suggestions on supplements and changes we should make to help prevent Marty's knees from getting worse instead of just prescribing meds upon meds to rack up the bill the way other vets would've. I was having issues with getting a consultation at places around the area and all of them weren't able to take me as soon as possible, but this place took me and my baby Pitbull and were so kind hearted. Dr. Cruz and his team at Colma Animal Hospital cared for my 16 year old cat as if she was there own. I cannot speak more highly of a professional, caring and communicative veterinarian than Dr. Cruz. I was referred to his practice by a UCSF medical school classmate and I am forever grateful and thankful that that connection was made. I started taking my cat, Ashely, to him so that he could remove plaque from her teeth or remove the teeth if need be. However, during these months I noticed, Ashley, who had kidney problems from old age, had stopped eating and drinking. In contacting Dr. Cruz and Colma Animal Hospital, they were able to fit her into their busy schedule and I was able to take Ashley the next day to be seen. This was incredibly helpful because of my rotation schedule. In the weeks that Ashley was seen during this illness, I was able to coordinate dropping her off and picking her up with Dr. Cruz and the staff. They are incredibly understanding and caring about the pet and the pet owner as well. Dr. Cruz guided me along during Ashley's illness by informing me of the possible diagnoses and tests he could run and communicated to me results in a way I could understand them. He also helped me make informed decisions about her care. When she wasn't eating, he would personally syringe feed her food to make sure she got enough nutrition. When she needed blood transfusions, Dr. Cruz personally arranged for other feline donors to give blood to her. He took care of her and loved her as if she were his own cat. In the end, Dr. Cruz was there and helped me make the difficult decision to put her to sleep. Though this is not the outcome anyone would hope for their cat, I am so glad that Dr. Cruz and his entire office were the ones to help me along the journey. I am forever indebted to Dr. Cruz and Colma Animal Hospital. When I am ready to have another cat or other animal, I will most certainly be going back to establish care with Dr. Cruz and Colma. My 9 yr old Maltese Yorkie, Shya, had a lump growing on her breast. Dr. Cruz is amazing! My dog isn't the greatest at the vet and I'm always anxious having to bring her in. He was able to schedule an appointment for us the same day and were able to bring her into surgery a few days later. Preop and postop Instructions were clear and Dr. Cruz called me right after surgery to update me. He was so helpful with following up the days after to make sure everything was okay. We have a crazy cat that needed to be vaccinated for rabies and get a booster shot. Most vets would recommend sedating her, but Dr Cruz used the old towel over the cat trick to calm her and quickly administer the vaccines without any mess! At home I realize that kika wasn't walking right so I brought her there. I signed up for yelp just for Dr Cruz b/c I TRUST HIM W/MY PET! He TRULY CARES & PERSONALLY FOLLOWS UP W/POST SURGERY RECOVERY. He's very knowledgeable,TAKES TIME TO ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS & explained my dog's health issues(she had 2 lumps & overweight). Lumps removed on short notice & did a great job. I was surprised(& appreciative) when he called w/post surgery update. Upon pick up, he brought her out & took time to explain & answer questions. My dog was in alot of pain 1st night & next day it was very easy to get ahold of him. He gave alternate pain med. I thought I would not see him when I picked up pain med(just pick up at front desk) but he spoke to me & asked if I had more questions. He has never made me feel like I am bugging him or taking up his time, that is rare. Most vets do the surgery and that is the end of their responsibilities. Not Dr. Cruz! He has been involved every step of the way & genuinely cares about the recovery of my dog. It also important to mention that he actually cares about the owners. By taking his time to check on the dog's recovery and being available to address any concerns/questions, it really eases my mind. He has checked in with me regularly for updates on her pain level and how the stitches are healing. That personal touch is worth more than gold. Im sure there are alot of knowledgeable vets around, but its a rare, precious thing to find a vet who personally follows up with the post surgery recovery of their patients. We are waiting for biopsy results, so of course I am worried. The bright spots is knowing Dr. Cruz is available and ACTUALLY WANTS TO HELP & ANSWER QUESTIONS and I trust that he will contact me as soon as the biopsy results are available. I went to this vet at Colma Animal Hospital to get my dog's eye checked out last year in June since I wanted to try out a different vet at the same place. He seemed nice and gave a good diagnosis. I asked him about teeth cleaning for my 8 year old maltipoo which he said he can perform. It's been a year so I wanted to get my pup's teeth cleaned and asked for an estimate. The vet called me over the phone and gave me an estimate of around $700 or so. I haven't decided if I wanted to get it done at Colma yet since it's definitely on the expensive side. The vet calls me the next day and starts referencing my yelp reviews of the hospital stating that clearly I was not happy and usually clients who are not don't go back to the place. I have written 1 star reviews regarding this place's front desk staff's rude behaviour on multiple occasions. I explained to him that I find no issues with the vets itself but just the front desk. The vets are good. I have gone to Dr.Bhakri in the past and he is very nice. He said that he hasn't read the review but he did not want to clean my dog's teeth. He is scared that I would write a bad review and kept insisting that it was a friendly call. I was definitely surprised that I got a call like this regarding the vet who clearly cares way more about getting a good yelp review rather than my business. I guess the vets can decline patients. I am surprised that instead of trying to fix that issue with the front desk or talking to them about it, the vet declines cleaning my pup's teeth and instead insists on referring me to another vet. read more
