A true hidden gem thats shines strong in the dim and dark alleys of Wakefield, Ferndandes is Wakefield's very own micro-brewey and bar!
Featuring a 'continental' bar on the first floor selling lagers, pilsners and wheat beers, the second floor hides a lovely den of other-worldy real ale pleasures where you'll find pale ales, stouts, bitters and all sorts of beery delights from session beers to unusual tasting 'one-off' kind of beverages with most being imported from Northern Europe and produced on site directly underneath both bars on the ground floor.
Fernandes has one of the most friendly and welcoming atmospheres because only a handful of people even know of its existence - in fact I only found out about the place as my father - a keen home brewer(!) queried in passing the existence of the place which sold ingredients back in the 70s or 80s(!). This led to me finding the place and being greeted with the most amazing little bars.
A warm, cosy atmosphere with people sat on wooden benches and stools makes an ambience that serves perfectly for talking and reminiscing the days delights or disasters. Cheeseboards with breads and crackers are also served alongside the ale.
The staff are very friendly and knowledgable about the drinks they are serving, although a small criticism would be that the decor pherhaps tries a little too hard to look old, revealing a nostalgia that to the overly-critical like me shouts faux. But to be fair, this place is wonderful, and Im far too purist when it comes to design, so I can totally overlook this, as the place is fantastic.
fernandes is a very unique place. It amazes me that this place exists and can exist, pherhaps a nod to keen business skills and probably a lot of passion for real ale.
Highly recommended, if you're reading this , chances are that you'll adore this place! read more
