I recommend trying the real cider, that is served. Food is served at lunchtimes, although it is not the best, in my opinion. The pub has four separate drinking areas and an outside terrace. The pub host beer festivals a few times per year. There is a pinball machine, and a jukebox, but the are rather unobtrusive, and are not a distraction. You can also play darts or chess if you wish. It's mostly regulars that hang out down the pub, but the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.

Round the corner and to the back is the pool table room where I've enjoyed beating my good friend on many occasions. They have seating to the front and in a small garden to the back, plus a small car park. It's a nice tidy pub, with friendly staff and fairly good beer. Don't remember it ever going quiet when I, a stranger, walked in.

The area outside, at the immediate rear, has been decked and covered over and the car park has been improved immensly. There is a childrens play area and it is very evident that this is a family friendly pub. The food is from a well balanced, unpretentious and reasonably priced menu and is always spot on. It's hard to resist a delicious beef baguette with gravy and real chunky home made chips! As well as providing a great place to drink and eat, The Flying Ferret is making a difference in Shelley as a place to meet and is doing great fund raising for various local charities. The bar is in the middle of the pub and this gives an open feeling. You can either sit at a table with chairs or at a higher table with benches. The bar offers cask ales and Belgian beers, gin, other spirits and whiskey, wine and bottled beers too. Some of the draft beers and coders change over time. A surprise every time you come in. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is happy and friendly. When I go in, during the day, the average age is 40+ and people are working or are trying out cask ales. I feel comfortable here on my own as a woman and I am usually always nervous when drinking on my own. If only I could get my hands on one of those Delirium crates!

For a start it's a nice building and is done out well. The reason I like it though is because it's got quite a bit to offer. They are really doing their bit for the local and underground music scene and still have live gigs on most weekends. That has to be commended so I am. You'll get everything from blues to folk. Worth a punt even if the genre isn't essentially your thing. Next up the beer is good. Oh yes, we're talking good casks and local too. Fancy a sip from a Leeds, Skipton, Sheffield, York, Ossett or Saltaire brewer? Then no problemo, my amigo. You'll also find Tetley's and John Smiths too. Aint half bad lad. As for the grub, it's proper pub food here. We're talking roasts, burgers and lighter bites at lunch too. The food is good, very traditional but good and there's plenty of room to sit down if you're eating.
