We ordered pork belly with all the "Sunday trimmings". When it turned up it was mash and pork belly. On a further note they have also taken sky sports out the pub which is a terrible decision. We know lots of people that would go to watch the football on a Sunday. When I asked behind the bar they said it's not financially beneficial to have it. This pub seems like it's going to the cleaners.

It was our first visit to the pub and certainly won't be our last. The afternoon was perfect and made the occasion all the more special. The elegant decor was classy but cosy which formed a wonderful back drop for our small family gathering. The menu offered alot of choice, which catered for all tastes and the smell from the thai dishes really made our mouths water. definatly worth popping back to sample. The roast I had was amazing, a good sized portion with everything cooked to perfection. Even our two young children had happy tummys when we left and we all know how hard it is to please young kids. A thumbs up from them means its definatly worth a return visit. Its also worth mentioning that you don't need to book and that the food came in good time after it was ordered. In some pubs you can be waiting an age but here, despite it being fairly busy the staff were on top of things. Monkey is the dog. Lola is the other dog but she doesn't like me talking about her behind her back so to save time let's just say Monkey is the cuddly one. *looks round nervously to check I'm not being watched* East Keswick is just up Wetherby Road- and the great news is you can get the 98 and 99 buses from town to RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DAMN PUB DOOR! Can't argue with that logic. The pub has a Snug at the front where dogs of all shapes, sizes and aromas are made to feel truly welcome. There's a tv for catching up with sports, an open fire, a doggly bowl and some cracking local beers and ales on offer. I had a pint of Mary Jane from the Ilkley Brewery and it was luscious. We'd first bunged the dogs in the car and had lunch in the restaurant part of the pub- which in contrast to the homely snug is really pretty classy for a pub meal. I think an evening meal here would impress. The staff were warm and welcoming and we had 3 courses for £15.95 each, with a decent bottle of red wine this brought the bill to just over £50, which is pretty reasonable for doing it 'all' and less pricey options were available e.g 2 courses for £12.95. This is for Sunday Lunch and there are weekday menus too. To start I had chicken liver pate which was smooth with a decent portion of chutney. Ade had ham terrine which was again sizeable and competently done. Both dishes were well presented and came with Melba toast. All very very good fare. For mains I went for the lamb cutlets and Ade the beef roast. The portions were again pretty sizeable, the roasts generous, crisp yet fluffy, mixed veg was properly al dente and had nice variety.....but it was the lamb that really stood out above everything else. Four almost fist sized hunks of perfectly cooked quality meat, pink on the inside, melt in the mouth and with a subtle and creamy peppercorn sauce to lubricate the GIANT mouthfuls I was pushing into my greedy face. It was sublime and my pleasure sensors were bordering on ridiculous. All this scumptiousness was topped off by Ade's dense and super sweet Sticky Toffee Pudding and the heavenly dark matter that made up my Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake. Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. We staggered back to the car to 'release the hounds' and then enjoyed the friendly snug for a slow drinking pint as we digested our heavy yet heavenly loads. Monkey in particular made SUCH a friend of the barman that every time he passed by and patted her head she jumped up, wrapped her front paws around his thigh and tried to walk off with him. I thoroughly recommend The Duke of Wellington if you are out that way, and as a diversion for excellent food/drinks and company even if you are not. With a bus to and from the door there's no excuse my little Leodensians, go get some fresh air and hearty fare.

The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. There's usually one or two dogs running around and it's not always clear who owns them. None of this should put you off. Sure, when you first wander in everyone will stop talking and stare at you, but this is mostly because you're new and exciting, not because you're new and unwelcome. It won't be long before they're chatting to you as if you were an old friend. There are two small rooms: one at the back that contains a pool table and a juke box and one at the back that has a real fireplace. the bar doesn't have the world's hugest selection but they manage a couple of nice real ales, as well as a few wines and ciders and all the spirits you'd normally expect. There's no kitchen but they sell crisps and nuts and occasionally the bar man puts on some free snacks. The pub quiz is on Sundays and is free to enter but is normally followed by a few more games which they ask you to chip in £1 to play. It's a lot of fun, quite tricky and well-attended to say this pub is in such a small village.

The conversation simply flows organically between the bar and the patrons because it is such a homely relaxed environment. Everyone who came in said 'Hello' to the rest of the room, so rare and harking back to a time when people really DID know your name- it reminds me so much of the village pubs I worked in as a teenager, a place where you might go even for just a half pint on the way home...not for the booze but to see a friendly face or two and soak up some much needed human interaction in what is an increasingly insular and lonely world for so many. Tracy was serving and had a very restricted menu due to it being the season and all that, the delivery was due the next day but she managed to rustle us up two roast beef dinners and the richest, most dense and biggest portion of steak and ale pie I have EVER seen. Having read the reviews I was brimming over with excitement to visit this little diamond. The food…read moresounded incredible, the building a treasure, and the staff a delight. As is sometimes the case, reading so many high reviews, your expectations can be raised beyond the achievable and so I was hoping for magic. We mightn't have found magic, but what we did find was a truly delightful pub in the midst of Hunslet. Let me start by attempting to paint the picture of just how gorgeous the architecture is. So bizarre is it to see such an amazing building in the midst of some rather droll redbrick housing estate, that it almost beggars belief. I found it fascinating - was Hunslet previously some kind of high end area of Leeds back in its day? How did this gem come about? Fortunately, the pub has kept various historical documents as to its origins, some of which are in a display cabinet detailing the story, a lot of which are used to decorate this fabulous structure. The pub is built in traditional fashion, with a long hallway as the entry, bar and tap room to the left, snugs and little nooks to the right. It reminds me of The Grove, both delightful anachronisms, and worth visiting to gaze upon. It's also now a Grade II* listed building. We were welcomed in, and I keenly asked about the, now Yelp-infamous, lunch. We were given a somewhat cryptic response - it wasn't a no, but it wasn't a yes. It wasn't really even a maybe! Apparently they'd a group booking so might not have been able to accommodate, so we ordered drinks, after hearing that is was possible potentially in an hour or so. Being now a Leeds Brewery owned spot, there's plenty of decent ale to keep you busy, whilst you have a gander and a natter. Another of our group bravely decided to ask about lunch after about half an hour, and the happy news was that they'd discovered some veg from their stores, so we could indeed dine that afternoon! I'm guessing, being so far out, that Sundays aren't always a busy affair - my advice might be to ring ahead and plan the visit, making sure they stock up before! After working out what the vegetarian in the party could eat (all the roast veg, and a veggie lasagne as the main part - random but suitable!) we ordered more drinks whilst we waited. Everyone was delighted that veggie gravy was also available. Soon enough, four stacked plates arrived before our eyes, and we tucked in. It's a proper home cooked vibe, so don't expect the likes of fine dining, but where it lacked in that area it made up for it in spades by being so damned hearty and cheap. I believe it was about six quid for a sizeable plate. The gravy, I thought, was delicious and the Yorkshire pud really tasty. I could have had several more! As much as there were quirks to the afternoon, the staff were all very lovely, and really helpful - especially since we mightn't have been fed at all that afternoon! There's nothing like a decent ale, a post-dinner game of random scrabble, a gorgeous pub, and an afternoon of laughter so for that I'm definitely a fan. I really want to come back and try the food again, especially as others have loved it so, so watch this space for an update. Another interesting thing would be to sink a few on an eve, and check out the vibe on a weekend. We'll see! Give them a visit, it's a beaut.
