A spectacular fall from grace....
I don't understand what has happened to what was a cracking little pub! I have eaten here a few times since it was refurbished and taken over and on every occasion my meal was, at best, 'poor'. Soggy, overcooked vegetables with bland, overcooked meat. All the things that made this establishment the special place it was have gone. Even the lager seemed rather flat.
The final straw came this weekend where the pub had descended so poorly into mediocrity I won't ever go back. The food was absolutely dreadful - the worst pub food I have ever encountered (and that really is saying something!). Our meals tasted like they had been pre-cooked and heated up in a microwave! What's more almost all of our plates went back to the kitchen generally untouched as the food was so inedible. No dessert menus were handed out, no one asked us how our meal was, so the customer service is at the same level as the quality of the food served. When we came to pay we were told that no credit card payments could be taken as the system was down. What is really amazing about this is that the lady who served us said she had 'meant to tell you before you ordered'. We had almost no cash on us so the old fashioned zip-zap machine was dusted off and used, but in such an inept manner - no one could read the cards, work out how the slips went into the machine etc. - it was like the staff had never used one before. But it gets worse - the credit card facility hasn't been available for TWO DAYS, yet they didn't tell us let alone get the problem fixed!
How sad. A once outstanding pub is now somewhere I won't venture again. We kept faith but weren't rewarded. Worth noting we were the ONLY people in there - always a bad sign - while the Shoulder of Mutton over the road was absolutely rammed. We could see as we walked past just how busy it was. I guess a good percentage of people there are ex-Star and Garter customers. Never again. read more
