They also seem to be interested in helping you with your issues, something that is usually hard to fake and is rare in most government employees around the country today. We live in one of the best communities in one of the best areas in the country and, in large part that is because of our local government professionals. We get many useful services from our township for the property taxes we pay.

I mentioned it to both of the staff members, and they just excused it away - "probably worked in a factory"......"hard of hearing".... without asking him to either lower his voice or continue his conversation outside. You can tell a lot of care has gone into preserving the history of the building. The inside is just as impressive as the outside. The marble floors, decorative ceilings, and historic chambers give you a real sense of Michigan's history and government. Walking through the halls and seeing where important decisions are made was both interesting and inspiring. The atmosphere was welcoming and educational. Staff and guides were friendly and helpful, and the self-guided areas made it easy to explore at your own pace. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or just looking for something unique to do in Lansing, the Michigan State Capitol is definitely worth the visit.

Capitol Square, where the building sits, is beautiful. You can take a tour during the week and every first Saturday of the month. I recommend scheduling tours in advance for large groups, however, for smaller groups you should still call to check availability since many schools and groups visit the Capitol. I like to say if you've been to any of U.S.'s capitol buildings, you've been to them all, because they all share similar architecture and layout, but of course each offers their own rich history. After I got my computer/etc. settled (near the table that has a "Quiet Room" placard on it, which made me happy because I get distracted easily), I discovered the ladies who work at the information desk (just 20 feet from this area) are non-stop talkers! Now, I completely understand the need for an information area to ask questions, and talk daily tasks, etc., BUT they never stopped chatting. (I see a Seinfeld episode brewing here!) I tried to ignore it, turning my headphones up, but I continued to hear the one talking to customers on the phone (and not using her quiet voice). I waited and tried to talk to her nicely, but she did not get off the phone and I had to go. I did mention my dismay to one of the nice ladies and the book check-out desk. I cannot understand for the life of me, WHY they would put and INFORMATION desk, where people talk, just 20 feet from a quiet reading area????? This makes absolutely no sense to me, and it made me angry! And yes, I did check out the "quiet study rooms", but they were all taken. This library needs to move the information desk (which is right in the middle of the library) to another part of the Library, and also strategically put up some soft partitions, maybe. Just an idea. Impressive organization and efficiency, only if all other government offices can be like this one…read more For passport renewal, if you qualify for the "simplified" process and can type / fill out the application form in advance, you can literally walk in and out of there in a few minutes. First you are directed to the Courtesy Desk, the staff go over your pre-filled form and existing passport, if all checks out you are given a number and sent back to the waiting area. The waiting time obviously depend on how many people are applying on the day, but the line for those with pre-filled forms moves much faster; you go up when it's your turn, answer the questions if there is any, pay the fee and you are done and out.
