Each visit over the past 7 years has resulted in a 30 to 45 minute session, from walking in the front door until I depart. The employees are always courteous, and immediately know my business when I mention "Form 2290". They are very thorough, and caught me trying to over pay them by $5 dollars during my recent visit. In contrast, the IRS office in Flint, MI was an unpleasant experience last year when I visited for much the same business reason. Their waiting area was not adequate for the number of people seeking assistance, and I heard many of the customers complaining that it was a repeat visit because the 1st time they were not taken care of. My visit in Flint took nearly 2 hours, while my actual interface with the customer service was a mere 10 minutes. As well, even the Michigan Secretary of State offices would be hard pressed to match the quality of service offered at this downtown location. Yes, the Detroit IRS office is my best bet, by far!

I didn't until this trip. You have a couple options if you are coming in from Detroit. You can take The Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. We did the tunnel to and from that made for an easy cross-border visit. You have to pay but It's about $8 USD to cross and $7CAD to return. Caesars Windsor is always a fun stop, and that is where our concert was held and was a great autotium. The City of Windsor also has some great wineries, breweries, and distilleries. Another fun fact is Canadian Club whisky was also started in Windsor from what I'm told. The riverfront and the views are a must see with all the beautiful with parks, artwork, and an awesome skyline shots of Detroit.

In addition to Baird, there is the Old Wayne County Jail and the William Dickerson Detention Facility. This jail is newer and in some ways, cleaner, than others. But it has many of the problems that are prevelent in other urban jails. As a social worker I occassionally visit detention facilities and, frankly, I've seen better. The process for visits is very chaotic and traumatizing to both the inmates and the family members. Staff are rude to visitors, professionals (like myself) who are entering the facility on business, and even to each other. It's hard to find visitng hours for this facility, so I'll paste them in here. Monday: Last names starting with A through H (7:30 am until 10:30 am) Tuesday : Last names starting with A through H (6:00 pm until 9:00 pm) Wednesday: Last names starting with I through Q (7:30 am until 10:30 am) Thursday: Last names starting with I through Q (6:00 pm until 9:00 pm) Friday: Last names starting with R through Z (7:30 am until 10:30 am AND 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm Saturday: Minor child visitation with approval and by appointment only. Children often get arbitrarily turned away from visits, even when they already have approval and have an appointment.

At secondary inspection a pair of characters that looked like Beavis and Butt-head came over to do a thorough inspection of me and my car, as the "Canadian patriot" had messaged them to do so. Beavis (skinny blond with pimples) kept asking me if my car was stolen. I thought he was joking so I didn't respond the second time he asked that. He then turned with a serious look on his face and said "your silence is not an answer", so I answered 'no'. He asked repeatedly if I had ever been to jail, when I responded 'no' he was getting upset too. I thought the excessive questioning was odd: stolen car, jail, etc. Beavis then told me to go inside their office building. There I was to face a little bitchy woman who tried so hard to intimidate me as well. I smiled at her and she lost it too. She looked like Stan's mean sister Shelly from South Park, the one with the braces. First thing she does is yell at me for not wearing a mask, like "this is Canada, don't you know our rules". I explained to Shelly that Beavis and Butt-head had sent me there and I was simply following their orders. I came back with my mask, she asked me also if my car was stolen and why I was headed to Toronto. She then asked me if I was trying to get a job in Canada. Seriously, WTF Canada!!! All I wanted is to go on a road trip, meet a friend in Toronto, and spend money in the province. I kept thinking how these people go home and interact with their loved ones, super creepy. Out of the blue Shelly told me I was free to go. Yipeee! As I was exiting I saw a Mexican guy who spoke no English and was struggling with another agent trying to communicate. I felt bad for him so I told him I'd help him and began translating and helping him fill the ArriveCAN form. The other agent asked me "are you Spanish?" I responded "no, I'm an American" lol. Not the brightest bunch. The Mexican guy just wanted to go back to the US, and quite frankly after dealing with these characters I don't blame him! I translated his entire communication with the agent, he thank me profusely, while all the agents just looked angry, bitter, confused. It takes a Mexican guy to show compassion, probably something none of these agents had ever seen before. I'll be thinking twice before crossing the border into Canada again, so much to see in Michigan without having to deal with these clowns at customs.

If you are not sure which building to go to you can drive into the main lot in front of the bright green building and ask in the lobby. The buildings are modern in design. It is easy access if you have business there either through the main entrance or the side entrance or through the parking garage (which requires special permission).

This is a very busy port of entry into Canada from the USA, and the commercial side of the port gets extremely busy. Arriving from the US and crossing over the Detroit River on a rickety old bridge, their facilities appear the be adequate, if not old. In all of my crossings over the decades, I have only experienced interaction with the border officials at the travel booths. They have a secondary area for further interrogation, but I have never needed to use it. Kudos for the professional men and women that staff this facility. They do their job well, and interact with the traveling public much better than I have often experienced going in the opposite direction. Sometimes I goof up and the innocent mistakes are remedied on the spot. Soon, I am on my way. Thank you to all that take part in ensuring safe borders between Canada and the USA!

It's a nice and smooth ride while you're on the bridge. They check passports entering Canada and coming back into the US. It's a $9 toll each way for using the bridge. Upon leaving Canada they have a duty free store at the border. I didn't find things that were that cheap. I did pick up a candy bar. Last time, I got myself a perfume.

The ride was smooth but let me tell you, they have barricades up and it can be slightly confusing as to where to go. I almost followed two trucks to the truck zone! The customs agents are fine and they have a border shop on the Canadian side for purchases of alcohol, purses, jewelry and other items. I think it's all tax free! I love the skyline view when crossing the bridge because you can see the rencen and the updated train station that was reopened over the summer. You can pay cash when entering the US, which is weird because going through the tunnel on the way to the border you could only pay by card. I also enjoyed the large Canadian and American flags huge from above to show which country you're in.
