All of the small details shined along with the clearly great sourcing mastermind behind this establishment. I started with the oysters. I was amazed with them their freshness and buttery taste and texture as well as a brilliant horseradish sauce that didn't overpower but rather added to the experience. As a main I had the rib-eye with a peppercorn topping. If there was any negative it only would be to the imagination of the sides which were chips /fries and onion rings with some salad leaves. But do not misunderstand me here the main star was clearly the ribeye. Not only cooked to perfection but the sourcing of the meat was incredible. This is no understatement as I eats steak multiple times a week, always ribeye and most of the time US prime. However this steak was incredible and the peppercorn sauce again did not overpower the steak but rather complimented it. I finished with the cheese plate and a glass of port. The cheese selection was spot on and I exceptionally enjoyed the blue. The chutney was probably the best accompaniment for the cheese selection. Crackers were ok and I could have used a toast but it didn't matter. Service was impeccable, even in a rushed setting it was perfect. All suggestions were spot on, never felt rushed and it always felt friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant and I would definitely come back and go out of my way to come back.

Bit of a difficult one to grade this time. Having been here a few years back for a work Christmas…read moredo, had another opportunity to return here for dinner with some colleagues. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.

The Wellington was perfectly prepared, tender, with excellent ingredients while the black pudding was flavourful and crispy outside with tender inside. It's very out of the way, but if you're up for a walk, it isn't really that far from the city centre on a nice summer evening. Service was extremely friendly from beginning to end. Our server was new, I think it was his second day, but he was funny and delightful and always answered our questions even if he had to ask someone else. Other hosts and servers came to take our coats and offer us water, and we felt very "looked after" all evening. I had a few glasses of wine - they only do 125 ml and 250 ml, so though I had originally planned on a 175 ml...well, oops! Guess I have to have a big 'un! They had quite a nice list of bottles, offering a variety of choices. We started by splitting the ham terrine with a crispy pig's head fritter, which was very good and must be ordered with bread - they'll bring it to you for free if you ask! Nice toasted bread on a plank with soft butter. The terrine was delicious, and went well with the creamy caper sauce served on top. The little fritter was excellent, filled with tender, flavourful cheek meat. Yum! I had the hake for my main, which was cooked very well, and was fresh and light. The flavours were subtle and simple, and I think I hoped for a little more close-your-eyes-and-sigh amazingness. My fiancé loved his veal, which I tasted and thought was absolutely excellent. Both dishes were beautifully presented and filled with fresh ingredients. The double-dipped chips were outstanding, as was the seasonal side of rainbow chard. For dessert we shared some kind of luscious chocolate thing (useful I know) with raspberries and a side of fantastic ice cream. All in all, a great place to go for a celebratory meal. It is a little pricey but very appropriate for the lovely setting, excellent service, and high quality of food.

The first was…read moreBarn at The Biscuit Factory, then came Black Door at The Biscuit Factory, and now it's NE2 Food Social. It's not the best name in the world, and the guests at the meal I attended last Saturday agreed it sounds like a soup kitchen! It's the old Black Door chef, having parted from the owner, who has gone to the Morpeth Black Door. If that makes sense :-S However, the food was fantastic. My pea soup was VERY pea-ey, in a green and pea-esque way. I was going to say full of peaness, but that sounds really wrong :-) My main was Coley and greens, which was fresh and tasty, and the dessert was Lemon posset, which had blackcurrants on the top. They counteracted the sweetness of the posset, and flattered the flavour of the lemon. The staff were friendly and helpful, and completely on the ball. My only criticism was that I got the sediment from the red wine 3 times in my glass which, although harmless, looked like tealeaves, and on the second time I asked the waitress to change my glass, she thought it necessary to tell me it was "just sediemnt" implying that I perhaps should accept my fate. I replied that I knew what it was, but that it didn't make me want it any the more. It's an odd location, the Biscuit Factory, but I would say it's easily one of the best around Newcastle.

The menu is a good selection from the home made burgers to Jacket potatoes. I love the Salmon or the Tuna with fresh veg (not in the butter) There is something for every one taste. A good choise of deserts if you have room and the Home made cake at £4.25 to take home or eat there. There is a family area soft play for the little one's five and under plus games for the the older ones. There is also toilets for the children in that area. There is t.v. which you can watch your children playing while you eat and have a chat. While there is a good size car park and restarant the car park is nearly always full and you have to wait a little while a busy periods. A small price to pay for the good food and service. Also I don't think you can book ahead as I belong to a walking group and when our leader tryed to book for 22 she was told no. Also we could'nt stop and have a drink after wards. I assume again because it is busy most of the time. I went with a few friends just before Christmas on the First of December at lunch time. It was'nt too busy and we sat chatting after our meal and felt under no presser to move. Dress up if you like or come in jeans, every one dresses diffent and no ones really interested as every one is there for the food. It's the sort of place you'd be more likely to find in London, and we're lucky that it's here. My fiancé took me here for dinner on the night that he proposed to me (!!) We had a reservation for a Wednesday night at 8. Definitely reserve, even on a weekday - it wasn't totally full up but at a place like this, you can't risk walking in! When we arrived they seated us downstairs in a casual seating area, where we were told we'd have a drink and decide which menu we wanted. We ordered a bottle of wine (many selections quite affordable - surprisingly), and opted out of the wine pairings with dinner as we'd already had loads to drink. We got the 7 course tasting menu (£65 per person - wine pairings would've been an additional £40). As we sipped our wine, we were brought our first appetizer - beautiful oysters served on a bed of seashells, and some chicken liver parfait. And a non-edible bowl filled with something that looked like seaweed, they poured broth over it to create this smoky scent and white smoke actually poured down over the table, for atmosphere. You know you're at a fancy place where they bring you something inedible as part of your course. After this, they took our wine upstairs where the main seating area is. The building is old and rustic, with exposed brick walls from the 16th century (so we were told). It has that cozy feel you get in an old building, smaller rooms and lower ceilings, etc. We then enjoyed the remainder of our courses over the next two hours or so - no sense telling you what we liked best as the menu no doubt changes seasonally and often. Almost nothing on the a la carte menu that they show on their website was in our tasting menu, it was a mostly totally unique menu. They cater to allergies and preferences even - I told them I didn't care for mushrooms and they left them off of 3 different dishes, each time I could hear the server saying "oh that's the one with no mushrooms." Nice touch! Service was very attentive and they explained each dish. The dishes were beautifully presented, like artwork on the plate. Some of the plates/bowls were quite fun - the soup was served in a tall, narrow bowl that was almost like a stone glass. Our favorite course was the onion-chorizo soup with house made bread. How ordinary does that sound? Yet it was STUNNING. I'd love to recreate that soup!! The fish courses were excellent, the quail was truly delectable, and I can still taste this sumptuous piece of foie gras when I close my eyes and remember. Everything tasted wonderful, nothing was overlooked at all. We skipped the cheese course (£8 per person if you go for it) as we really did get full, though all the courses were small. I think that quail is on the a la carte menu, by the by, as a first course. Go for it. Dessert was a very rich chocolate cake of some sort, my least favorite as I'm not a dessert person and it was so rich, but my fiancé loved it. We had another glass of wine at the end - they have some very unique wines by the glass including some from Uruguay and Lebanon. Yes, it's pricey - I think the bill came out to around £170 or so, for two. But you won't have another meal like it in town, and since it was the most special of all special occasions, it was worth it. Well, ask my fiancé if it was worth it, he treated me! It was a night I won't soon forget and you should absolutely spend a birthday, anniversary, or engagement dinner here!

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle.
