This review is for the excellent customer service at Fellow Barber. Formerly known as FSC, I have been to each of the NYC locations and have settled on the Williamsburg location because it has a great vibe. When the weather is nice, they open the large front garage door to create a great "front porch" quality. Even when it's busy, the place is big and open and stress free. My only real complaint is not even a real complaint: They don't make appointments, so if you want someone in particular, you have to be proactive about learning his or her name and schedule. If you're lazy like me, you'll just walk in and usually get someone different every time. I'm not a high maintenance hair guy, and I'm sheepish about complaining about a haircut. I've had some great haircuts here and some not so great haircuts, so if you find someone you like, introduce yourself and start a relationship. My most recent cut was not so great. I was miffed at first that I would have to go back and ask for a touch up. Getting a haircut is a very personal experience. It's clear that FSC or "Fellow" strives for this classic personal experience. When something goes wrong, it's easy to take it personally. I didn't want to offend my barber by asking another barber to fix a mistake. I didn't like being put in the position to have to speak up and possibly hurt someone's feelings because I wanted something fixed. I called and explained the situation and the staff was extremely helpful and made me feel totally at ease. I was personally seen by a managing barber, Mike, who fixed me up free of charge. My hair is a little wonky anyway so I didn't expect it to be perfect and I really appreciated the attention they gave me. The strength of some businesses relies not on the promise of never making mistakes, but in the way they handle those mistakes. Fellow Barber gives a 5-star personal experience in this respect. If you want a perfect cut every time, you have to do your homework and build a relationship with someone who totally gets what you want. And once in a blue moon if something needs fixing, they will treat you like a king. read more

Checked out this place on Yelp and it got good reviews. I wasn't terribly excited about going to a place that doesn't take appointments, but I figured I would try it out since it was close by. I walk in at 6:30 on Monday and the disinterested clerk informs me that they are not seeing anyone else tonight. There are three barbers (who all had clients) and no one else was waiting. really wanted to like fellow barber, instead i went home with one of the worst haircuts of my life. the guy who was doing my hair (a shame that i don't remember his name...) was a disaster. i asked for his advice and his only answer was "it's up to you, it's your choice". he spent more time looking at the tv in the corner than at my hair, so the haircut ended up completely crooked. in the end he cut me while trying to shave my beard and on top of that messed up my shirt with the desinfection spray. i can't believe i actually paid for what i got. never ever felt so unwelcome in a barber shop... read more

When the barber suggested that his fifteens years managing a pizza joint qualified him to cut hair on the basis that 'it's all service industry, isn't it!' I should have bolted. I've been using the West Village FSC barbers for years, it's always been good...even the times I've gone with pot luck on the barber. So the scare cut I landed from Neil - the former pizza guy - came as a shocker! A pretty straightforward trim turned into a patchy, lop-sided, chunk cut horror-show that would of made a $10 student barber cut look classy. Given that Fellow barber's ain't cheap at $42 you figure the basics of length and line would be followed. To the places credit the assistant manager attempted to make good on a botched job, but 'wait a month till it grows back' isn't what you want to hear. Anyone have any suggests on Brooklyn barbers that have a good eye, and ideally without the hipster prices? I'm off to get a patchy, chunk cut pizza! read more

BULLSHIT, PRETENTIOUS OVERPRICED, AND RUDE! THEY WILL WASTE YOUR TIME! Go to Person's of Interest instead. They're nicer, cheaper, they give you a drink, and they take (and honor) appointments. I had a couple decent experiences here, and since they aren't far from my house, I decided to make it my regular spot. One sat I woke up pretty early, around 10am. Since, they DON'T TAKE APPTS, I strolled over and checked in around 10:45 to get a cut. The dude at the front told me, it would be about 1hr 15 mins. It seemed like a long while, but I said I'd stroll the hood and come back. I returned an hour later so I wouldn't miss my name. And I waited, and waited, and waited and waited. They kept calling names other than mine. I realized that a lot of the people being called checked in after I sat down (which was already an hour after checking in). I went to the dude at front and asked, "How much longer, becuase you said 1hr 15, and it's been about 1hr 45mins." He said not to worry that I was almost up. So I waited longer, and continued to watch other people be called. About 20 mins later (over 2 hours of waiting time) he comes over to tell me that I'm next. At this point I'm pretty pissed, but, if I'm next, then OK. So the next name they call out....NOT MINE. I was fucking livid, and storming out. The front desk dude rushes over and has the fucking gall to say: "We're not skipping you!!!!!!" "LIKE FUCKING HELL YOU'RE NOT! YOU JUST FUCKING SKIPPED ME!" "No, you requested first available, and those people asked for specific barbers." WHAT KIND OF FUCKED UP BULLSHIT ANSWER IS THAT? If you don't take appointments, then you first available, means the NEXT FUCKING HAIRCUT! read more

I am completely done with this place. I used to come here before they changed their name and it was fine. But lately it seems like no one knows what they're doing. My last cut was probably the worst cut I've ever had in my life. I asked to keep the same style and to just take a tiny bit off the top but instead he chopped off a significant portion of the top and the sides are so short they stick out. I was in the neighborhood and had a job interview the next day so I decided to walk in. I described to the barber how I wanted my haircut, short on the sides, not to take much of the top. I took off my glasses and really couldn't make out what she was doing in the mirror. After she finished with the sides she begins working on the top. I really thought she was just making everything even but she takes most of it off at the top! She really could've given me a haircut with hair buzzers in 2 minutes and have it look the same. The worst does not end there. The cut took no more than 12 min. I go to the register and she charges me $45. FORTY-FIVE DOLLARS! I get better haircuts in my neighborhood (5 train stops away in Queens) for $12! I really don't understand the need to charge so much for a quick cut. I made the mistake of not asking how much before sitting down, I figured I'd be willing to pay under $25 for a nice cut, but $45?? Lexi is hands down, the best barbers I have ever gone to. I first started coming to her after growing my hair out for a full year going for a bigger hair look. That already had me a bit worried because I did not want someone to chop of all my hair after spending so much time growing it out. Lexi immediately put me at ease and really listened to what I was going for and gave me a sense of trust. (Most barbers act like they listen to you and just assume and do what they want) From there on out I have religiously been going to Lexi and she's been great at both longer hair cuts as well as the more technical shorter hairstyles I go for now. Aside from her crazy skills with hair - she's always down to have good conversation which is important when sitting in a chair for an hour (I have been in some painfully awkward silent cuts with others and hate them) I wouldn't recommend anyone more than Lexi! read more

Maybe I just can't afford this neighborhood anymore as $100 (counting tip) is a bit much for me. I guess most people who review barbershops do so if they had a bad experience, and you rarely hear from the dozens of satisfied people on Yelp, which is why I decided to review this place. Honestly, I had exactly the experience I was looking for. The online waiting list system was spot on, the staff was friendly, my barber did a good job and paid attention to details, the towel at the end was a nice touch. All in all, this is the third barber shop I try in Williamsburg and it's the first time I find I actually got my money's worth. I will definitely be back. read more

Yo. I only write reviews of things I feel the need to rave about (because internet beefing is so stupid and easy) - and this is one of those rave-worthy things. I've got my hairs cut there 2x now, and I will def be a repeat offender, because wow. Beautiful interior, great looking equipment, and that's just the superficial stuff. My bartender was Chris, this Scottish guy, and he is meticulous and highly trained. He's also good for a chat. I don't mind the wait if I get there later in the day for a cut, because if I have the time, it feels old-timey to sit there and read the paper. Everyone there is wicked nice, and I def get a serious strut in my step after these guys cut. Oo also like the warm eucalyptus towel on the face thng. It opens up the pores or something. Nice touch. It's a bit inconvenient that they don't take reservations, but I haven't minded putting my name on the wait list and taking a walk in the area or grabbing a coffee while I waited. I used to go to Fellow Barber every 2 weeks to a month. Had a regular barber who cut there, but he'd left. I went back to get my haircut, and I decide to try a new guy. The guy was nice enough, but as I was speaking to him I realized that he had only started cutting hair for at most a year. He was "training" at fellow barber. If I wanted a barber in training I would've went to a school and paid 20 bucks at most. I got an uneven haircut, and got charged $45 for the cut. They didn't even provide the ceremonious hot towel in the face. Oh, and I tipped too ($10)- cause that's what everyone expects for any kind of service these days. This establishment is undeserving of business. I've never been anywhere where my time is wasted more consistently. Between their dysfunctional scheduling system and incompetent front desk personnel, I've easily lost hours of my life to waiting for a haircut. My most recent visit on a quiet Saturday morning consisted of waiting 25 minutes for a cut, only to be surpassed by someone who showed up 15 minutes after me. The man at the front desk could barely mumble an apology, and offered no solution before I walked out. This was not an isolated incident. I was literally given the worst hair cut of my life here. The woman wouldn't stop talking/annoying me while she cut my hair. Also trying to sell me shampoo throughout. I got my hair cut here a year ago, and because it was so bad I trimmed it myself in the mirror when I got home. Since then I have cut it myself, so I guess there is one positive to me visit. Desperate for a good cut, I asked a friend where he gets his hair cut. He recommended Chris at Fellow. I used the online check-in tool to schedule a cut with Chris on their website today (the site was seamless and on point), showed up within the timeframe the check-in suggested and didn't even have to sit down and wait. Chris greeted me warmly, sat me down, listened to my direction and proceeded to cut my hair. Great chit chat, not too talky and not too quiet, just right. About 15min or so later he was done. He did an awesome job! It was exactly what I wanted and then some. He put a hot towel on my face and did an excellent job shaving my neck. I've had some scary incidents at other barber shops in the past and can be somewhat weary when the neck shave time comes. I'm extremely grateful to my friend for recommending Chris. Fellow barber is everything you could want in a barber shop. It's a beautiful space with great service and style. The music is a big plus it is old school and brings you to another time. Everything for sale in the front area of the shop is pretty spot on and fun to browse. I was introduced to them when my girlfriend bought me their dude #1 beard oil in collaboration with MCM Fragrances. It smells great, I love it personally and she loves when I throw it in my beard. Which doesn't hurt. I came for a beard trim and it was excellent shop was pretty full but the wait wasn't long at all. Trim went quickly and was exactly what I wanted. I had a great experience here and will most surely be returning for my beard trim needs and more beard oil when I run out. read more

Fellow Barber is a nice space with some decent barbers and a good selection of men's grooming products, but the fun is often spoiled by a poor customer service experience. It makes no sense that a business charging $50 for men's haircuts won't take proper appointments. The poorly designed, dysfunctional online registration system makes what should be a simple experience an often frustrating one. And if you walk in off the street without pre-registering, you could be waiting hours to see your preferred barber. On top of this, I've been treated with a hostile attitude by the front desk staff on more than one occasion, which leaves me wondering if they care about customer satisfaction at all.
