I love Favela's. Such a beautiful restaurant inside with its beautiful intimate ambiance, lovely decor, and welcoming staff. Inside there's a beautiful bar with TVs and plenty of seating. Our server for the night was Gina and she was a gem. Welcomed us as soon as we stepped inside and greeted us with the biggest warmest smile. She was quick with taking our orders and bringing out our food and drinks. The drinks from the bar were superb. The food came out gas too but just keep in mind it's smaller portions. We got the tacos and they're small street tacos so if you're hungry plan accordingly. Also the chips and salsa is delish. We come here often so we will definitely be back. Staff friendly, drinks were great (def recommend the Mexican mule), loved the chips. They were so good they have to charge for a refill ($3). We missed the happy hour but good to know they have one. Since Fairfield is pretty much half way between our home and UCD we were looking for the perfect meeting spot for our daughter. And we found it! Went in for the first time a few days ago because it's one of the few places in town I haven't been to yet. The ambiance is a solid 5 and the AC was more than adequate on a hot day. I ordered the steak fajitas, which are literally advertised on the menu as, "the best fajitas in the country"! Well, with an outlandish claim like that how could I resist? Unfortunately, they weren't even the best fajitas I've had in the last year, let alone in the entire country. As another reviewer mentioned, they were very greasy, cooked and soaking in some sort of tomato based sauce, and definitely not sizzling as they should be. The meat itself was pretty gamey tasting, unseasoned, and lacked the char-grilled flavor fajitas should have. The bartender/server was competent and attentive enough, but lacked even an ounce of personality and gave the impression she'd rather be anywhere than there. But then some regulars she knew came in all of a sudden she was all smiles and giggles, so maybe she just didn't like me for some reason? She also looked to be about 17 years old. Although, she did have tattoos, so I assume she's at least 18, but old enough to be serving alcohol seems like a bit of a stretch. Plusses... As I mentioned, great ambiance, very clean, good temperature, speedy food delivery, excellent Verde salsa, but lacking any heat. Took a while to get anyone to see we had come in and were waiting to be seated. Food took FOREVER to come out. Followed by some of the worst Mexican food we have eaten. Hubs ordered nachos, sounds simple, but it was so bad. Chicken and beef fajitas were terrible. Meats were hot grilled or even close to sizzling. Instead had the look of being fried up from frozen and boiled in the freezer juices. Seasoned only with black pepper. Had to ask for the guacamole and pico it was to come with. Terrible guacamole, very thin with huge shanks of onion and lots of lemon juice. Service was poor. Had my hand raised for a while to get attention to request toppings. Authentic Mexican food...not sure why they say it's 'Fusion' but really good food with decent portions. The mole' sauce is one of the better one's experienced and the street tacos were excellent and stuffed with meat and filler. They used corn tortillas which absorbed all the juices (unfortunately) resulting in them breaking apart but knowing that, keep the juice away! Great atmosphere/ambiance and very friendly staff! Had a last minute dinner here for Cinco de Mayo. Wait for a table was about 20-30 min. Place was very busy. Took a bit for us to get served and another table that got seated after us got served first - no biggie. Saw two servers consistently serving outside and because of how long it took to get served that they were short staffed and doing their very best. Martha was our server who is an absolute delight! Despite how busy it was and her telling me that they were in fact the only two servers, i appreciated how personable her service still was and diligence in making sure our order was right and we had all that we needed. She did tell us ahead that they were also short on cooks and that the wait could be a little longer to get the food. I think setting this expectation up front in addition to how great she was made our experience worthwhile despite the long waiting periods. This experience could hve easily been a bad one But i was glad to have been patient in learning how short staffed they were. It almost made me upset to see how agitated some folks who were waiting seemed to get lol. This certainly isn't a pity review since Martha has helped me in the past pre covid and it's a long overdue rating. This is the second time coming here. The first time was great - ambiance, music, service (we had a male server), vibe, etc. all were better than other Latin spots in Fairfield! We decided to give it another go tonight but had a completely different experience - it was terrible. First of all, they sat us down at a table that had a lot of fruit flys flying around. After letting the server (Maria) know that there were lots of fruit flies around us she just told us "oh that's weird" like it wasn't a big deal. When she brought us our drinks she messed up our order by putting the Don Julio shot in the margarita instead of leaving it out as I had asked her to. She asked me if I still wanted them and I said yes so she ended up bringing us two shots. After a few minutes we couldn't withstand being surrounded by 6 or 7 fruit flies and since the sever never offered to move us, we decided to move ourselves to another table. After a few minutes we noticed that there were also fruit flies at the new table we moved to. To top it off, as I took a sip of my shot I noticed that a fruit fly was floating in it. I called Maria over for her to see that a fruit fly had landed in my drink and instead her of going to the bartender to correct the drink, she walked over to the cook and while trying to look for the bug in my drink proceeded to show it to him, then if that wasn't enough she then shows the drink to another gentleman wearing a white shirt (maybe a manager but who knows because no one came over to talk to us) and he then looked at our drink. After that she then takes the drink over to the bartender and starts looking into it again and tells her about the bug. The bartender, without questioning said out loud "that's ok" and asked if that was Don Julio Reposado to which Maria replied yes and they brought me a new drink. To my surprise when I received the bill they did not apologize for anything and they did not offer anything complimentary for the poor service/environment that they were giving their clients due to the many bugs in the restaurant and more importantly for one going into my drink. As if this wasn't enough, after we asked Maria for to-go plates (we ordered guacamole, chips and salsa) she only brought us one big container. I patiently waited looking back towards Maria for a few minutes and noticed that she was deliberately not looking our way. The cook near the dining area could see me this whole time and when she walked by him he told her in Spanish, Te Buscan", which in English means "they're looking for you". Maria proceeds to say "ya se" / "I know" and after she finishes helping some guy with a takeout order she continues to not go towards us. We finally get up out of our seat and go ask for little cups to take our salsa and after we pack up we leave. Before posting this review I read a few recent reviews and surprise surprise someone named Alexandria C. wrote a Negative review about Maria. I worked in the service industry for many years in the past and know that this type of worker will continue to exhibit this type of behavior if not dealt with and will continue to drive happy customers out. I typically share positive experiences (as you can see from the reviews in my profile) but this negative experience made me so mad I had to share it. Come for the drinks, not for the food or service. Disappointed to see one of my favorite places go down hill service and food wise. In tonight's interaction, a combative, rude, and mistske driven server spoiled our evening. We ordered: house margaritas, cucumber jalapeño margarita and a gin n tonic. The GT came with no lime and when I asked for one, it never came. I guess I should have specified when she asked me, in a questionable tone; is that gin and like water? No, It's a gin and tonic with a lime and for the gin I'll have it with Tanqueray and tonic. The lime never came and I went to the bar to ask for a lime. This happened for both rounds of drinks. The GT didn't have Tanqueray Gin. The bartender was cool, she gave me the limes. The drinks were good. Now for what we ordered; Steak a La Tampiqueña, mole enchilada, beans, Spanish rice, and corn, mole enchiladas dinner plate, and the molcajete for 2 with green salsa. What we got with our Steak Al a Tampiqueña: a red enchilada that tasted like ketchup and when I brought this to the servers attention that it wasn't correct, she argued with me and told me that mole isn't on the menu. (Check my previous review, I've been coming here for over 6 years). Not wanting to argue, I settled for the ketchup enchilada, a small portion was eaten before giving up on the plate. This was disappointing because we were here last week and had the steak a La tampiqueña with mole and it was great and what we were looking forward to. We gave in and asked for the mole enchilada a La carte which suddenly reappeared on the menu. The molcajete came without salsa and was dry. When I brought it to the servers attention, she was like "there's no salsa? Really?" To which I responded, yes want to see and had to move all the things to prove to her that there was no salsa. I get it, the kitchen probably missed it, not a big problem, but the attitude was not appreciated. She slams over a cold side of salsa and says pour it on top and then walk away. Our table had tons of dishes and empty glasses because she walked away before we could ask for more drinks. I facetiously placed them on the empty table next to us since we had no room to enjoy our meal. We tried to order more drinks with her but she kept walking away as we were mid sentence with our orders and said "same thing all around" as she walked away. When in reality we ordered new drinks but she brought the wrong one out. I told another server that the drink that was brought out to me was Incorrect and she took it away to bring the jalapeño margarita I ordered. The drinks were good however the service was horrendous. The check comes and we see that in the check, we we're charged extra for the mole enchilada with the steak a la tampiqueña (comes with, checked the menu). The mistake was clearly a kitchen error and could have been remedied if our server wasn't so combative and rude. I shared with her that what we were being charged with wasn't what came on the table which I brought to her attention when she told me that there was no mole enchilada on the menu earlier. She then proceeds to argue out table about how the enchilada was eaten even though it was wrong. I was appalled that she wanted to argue this. I calmly stated that the ketchup enchilada was disappointing and it was not completely eaten because it was gross. She said well you ate it so pay for it. I said ok fine, here is the payment. The server wanted to continue arguing with our table about the enchilada when I told her that the conversation was done and to run the payment. At this point, we were all frustrated with this interaction and her combative behavior that we were stunned to be receiving this kind of service. It spoiled our night. We didn't leave a tip on a $225 tab because she was so rude. When I communicated with her, I was calm, respectful, and trying to be clear on the issue on hand. That was not reciprocated by the server. In addition, another table serviced by her got up and left because she never came to take their order and they were waiting about 20 minutes for service. The restaurant was not busy (maybe 5 other tables with us during this time). They kindly thanked her "for her service " as they left the place. As I eaves dropped on the other table being serviced by her, they were also not happy with her. If you come here, ask for another server and avoid Maria B. Unless you want to argue with the wall, prove that the order is wrong, and go in circles. The servers should have an idea on what is on the menu. Trust me, I tried my hardest to give grace, understand that the world is trying to bounce back post covid19, and that she was probably new... but man the Maria was combative and unpleasant. Next time we skip the food, and only sit at the bar. The bartender is cool and she took care of us the previous times we've visited. read more

The interior of Favela's was very inviting with it's large decor and chandeliers. I met up with a few coworkers for a Saturday lunch before wine tasting in the Fairfield area. When we arrived, it was just at opening, so not many customers trickled in until probably 30-45 mins after. I ordered the Molcajete ($45) to share with one other person. Honestly, huge enough to feed 4 in my opinion! Just wish we got more tortillas. A molcajete is the stone bowl the food was presented in. It was a mix of mais, jumbo shrimp, steak, chorizo, zucchini, avocado, grilled onions, and more. I very much enjoyed it. If only they came in smaller, personal sizes! read more

I've been coming here for years and heard they're under new management and not good anymore so I went to see for myself. Food-average, overpriced, nothing to brag about The service the last two times I went is what will keep me and my friends from coming back. Went with a group of friends a few weeks ago. Got the beef fajitas (very greasy) . Had the option to upgrade to shrimp . We sent the receipt to each other to venmo and released we were charged 'beef $4' twice on top of our order of fajitas price that chicken n beef are included in the fajita price . Went back with another group of friends. Ordered our drinks and the waitress only came back with one. 2 more of our friends arrived so she reordered her drink and finally got it. We asked for another basket of chips and salsa as there are 4 of us and the 2 of us pretty much ate most of them before our friends got there :/ they said it's $4 for extra chips n salsa!!!! Crazy being that I was just here two weeks ago and had a party of 6 and we had 3 baskets of chips and sauce for our table and were never charged. This wasn't mentioned in the menu either . Favela's is an above average dining option in a city that is seriously lacking choices. (The dining highlight of the local population seems to be Texas Roadhouse). Service (at the bar) is def 5-star worthy. I love that I walked in and was promptly greeted w a smile! Tina provided cheerful, attentive service to the bar patrons, constantly checking up on us. As you may know, my reviews are most always based on my solo bar seat. The reason for the overall non-5 star rating was the happy hour food having a slight flavor deficit. Good but not excellent.
