My Kids and I had a great experience here. First time we came by, we looked at every pet they had, knowing we'd come for a cat, only. The facility was clean and employees were nice. -We fed the goats and pig, saw the horses and visited the dog area. A small location but had great opportunity for personal animal visitation and big outdoor area to run like the wind with your potential new pet. -We put in an application to adopt 2 cats! One 7 month old named Meadow who's extremely timid, and a 10 year old we call Yamato, who's a perfect snuggler. This was on Friday. Sunday we were awarded with the adoption!. Yamato, actually led Meadow around our house room to room when we got home. They slept under my daughters bed all night. The next morning we had massive snuggle time with yamato. He walked over to Meadow and they touched noses like he was saying, "hey they're ok".. Monday night Meadow had a wild party while we slept. I heard her jumping around and even batting the jingle ball around the floor. When I woke up this morning, both cats were at my feet the minute I got out of bed. Amazing! We lie on the floor nearby and they end up coming to us, instead of us imposing on their personal space. We still have a way to go with Meadow but Yamato licked my whole hand this afternoon out of love and thanks for his rescue. - I'm glad I waited until my kids were older to get a pet rather than add expense and more clean up duty as a single mom. It's a lot of work owning a pet. And can add a bit of stress. Think really hard before committing. - The people at the SPCA here in Midland, Fauquier Co., were so happy we picked the older cats and were we. They had a lot of recommendations for us regarding veterinarians and general health care. They gave us two gift bags of food, toys and catnip. Also carry boxes to get home. I could tell they care about the animals there. Everyone we interacted with was a pleasure. (5 people)! That says a lot. This weekend we get our cat tree so we'll share more pics soon. read more

Director is horrible. They say "Adopt, don't shop" then use excuses. I went several times to look at a dog and speak with the staff. Not once did anybody say I was automatically disqualified for not having a big enough house with another dog until I got the call from a staff member that the director disqualified me for that reason alone and it was not up for discussion. I guess I will be shopping instead and I'm not sure I'll be keeping up with my donations. read more

I've been visiting this adoption center over the last year to help both myself and my boyfriend find a new dog, and while I've had a long history with this place since childhood, the experience has recently become unnecessarily challenging. My family has adopted every pet through this center since I've ever known, and had never had a bad experience. However, my recent visits have been very frustrating and kind of a disappointed to what the organization has come to. Both my boyfriend and I had similar experiences. We came in, eager to adopt, submitted applications that were approved, and were excited to find a potential match. Unfortunately, neither of us were able to take our initial picks home. In my case, the first dog I chose wasn't a match because he didn't get along with cats, which I have at home. But I appreciated that my approved application would be valid for six months, and I was assured I'd be able to take home a dog on the same day if I found a good match. About a month later, I found another dog I was very excited to meet, with the expectation that if he was a good match, I could bring him home that day. During the meet-and-greet, everything was going well, I doubled checked with the adoption counselors if my approved application would let me take him at the end of the day. However, a staff member, who I believe was in charge that day and might be involved in the adoption process but not the director, had came in to see if that would be possible. She started questioning me in a passive-aggressive tone, repeating questions I'd already answered during my initial visit. She questioned my living situation as I do live with my dad, who was fully aware I was adopting a dog. This led to her saying I couldn't take the dog home because she'd need to contact the director to confirm whether my dad would need to meet the dog as well. (Even though this information had been in my application from the beginning, which was already approved and was not questioned with the first dog I looked at.) When I asked if there was any estimated time for a response, she insinuated I wasn't going to expect to hear back soon, as it was a holiday weekend. I even offered to have my dad come in that day to see if it would help the process, but my offer was declined without explanation. Then after I left, about 30 minutes later, I got a call saying I could adopt the dog after all. While I'm thrilled to have my new fur baby, I can't help but feel the process was far more complicated than necessary. My boyfriend had a very similar experience last year, except in his case, he was told his roommate needed to come in - which again turned out not to be necessary in the end. I completely understand the importance of having policies to ensure animals go to safe, loving homes. But once an application is approved, it shouldn't feel like there are additional hoops to jump through. Please don't assure people they'll be able to easily take their new pets home to pre-approved applicants if the process is going to be hindered by unnecessary complications read more

2 hours ago NEW Worst place to adopt from. DONT ADOPT FROM THESE PEOPLE. Front desk lady told me to fill out an application for a dog.i did while doing that, she'd told me he had several approved applications on him already. She then went around the corner and called a friend or family member. She tried to whisper her conversation but was unsuccessful at it. I overheard her telling the person to come get the dog because he had approved applications on him but that she personally wanted this dog to go to whomever was the phone. The person was not able to come and get the animal today. But instead stated that they would be able to come and pick up the animal this weekend on Saturday. I then heard the woman employee tail. A male employee in a whisper ring voice that the dog is supposed to be picked up on Saturday and going home with the individual that she just spoke to on the phone. What I don't understand is why this place would have people come in and do applications on the dog, But yet the employee at the place is openlingly contacting their personal family or friends to come and get an animal read more

They do not deserve a star the director is unkind,uncaring and rude. I called for over 3 weeks .she finally "allowed" us to surrender our dog after we tried 6 months to rehome her. She yelled at me and my daughter threatened to call the cops and grabbed my door handle. My heart was already broke I need 2 knee replacements and she treated me like an animal abuser. My dog kona is young and energetic and I van nit care for her due to medical reasons. I have never been belittled and talked down to like that in my life after I called them for help. The director should be removed she yelled at my daughter telling her she's a little girl and can't handle the dog. Rudest human and obviously hates her Jon and the animals. We just adopted a two month old golden retriever mix puppy from this remarkable shelter. This is the first shelter I've ever been to that literally did not smell of animal urine and feces. The staff was extremely helpful and generous with their advice and time. They allow you to become acquainted with their pets in a viewing room and then in our case we had another dog so we took them to an outside pan where they were able to become acquainted. They had a veterinarian on staff that discussed shots and what is been done with the pet. We completed an application, they checked our history with our veterinarian for our previous and current dog and within one hour we walked out with Charlie, our sweet new dog. We needed a inside small fence and they sold us a used one for $35. I highly recommend this facility. read more

If your pet gets surrendered here, good luck. My parents wrongfully took my cat Pete in while I was on vacation without me knowing. I'm in the process of moving out of state. I called and asked about Pete as soon as a heard he was taken in. I was TOLD to come in after he had been neutered so that I could collect him. Once I showed up to the facility, I was told the opposite. Even though Pete was MY cat that my parents had no authority to surrender, that means nothing. I put in an application and explained what had happened, even BEGGED. I was denied even the right to see him. How is it that the cat that I am the owner of has "a better home" than the one he was already in? Who I assume to be the director left me a message telling me she cannot "in good faith" return Pete to me and that he would be euthanized if need be. The business practices of this facility are questionable at best. My cat was stolen from me and I was told I can't have him back because of my parents as a grown adult. Pete is being kept from a safe, loving home that he knows. They never bothered to ask any information about his home or how he is treated and cared for. My husband and I have been getting over the passing of our dog nearly 3 years ago. She died the week before my father-in-law. Last summer we began discussing the possibility of opening our hearts and home again to a fur baby. In the past month we have increased our search. We visited this location for the first time last Saturday. We were pleased with the appearance of the facility and grounds. That's where it ends. We met a dog who reminded us of our previous fur baby. Similar in so many ways. We hit it off very well! We were told the adoption process takes 48 hours. That is fine, so we filled out an application. No one told us there were many others who had applied for this dog. Had they said this we would have met other dogs. We spent the weekend planning, preparing, and opening our hearts to receive this new family member. I called after 3pm Monday and was informed that the dog had been adopted Saturday afternoon! Just a couple hours after we had left him!! The only explanation given was "this is our process." At no time did anyone let us know of the possibility of another family getting the dog we fell in love with. We are heartbroken, angered and extremely disappointed in the SPCA as a whole. Every fur baby that has come to our family over 30+ years has been a rescue. Never have we experienced this policy or lack of consideration for the families. I am grateful that our children are grown. Little kids would have been devastated!! read more

The director of this SPCA is ill equipped for this position, both professionally and as a person in position of authority. From our first conversation on the phone, I was interrupted, accused of falsehoods, and threatened. Our 10 year old farm dog was picked up by a new neighbor and given to Sheriff's animal control, picked up only yards from our driveway entrance on a remote gravel road. I noticed his absence immediately and called SPCA ASAP, the next AM, as the office has short hours. From the first telephone interaction,the director gave a terrible account of the dog's condition, despite regular good reports from our vet. When I said that her description did not sound like our dog and requested a picture for ID, she refused to send a picture. She replied saying she wouldn't give me her personal number, which I never asked for. She continued with false accusations by claiming I couldn't possibly have the dog registered, vaccinated for rabies or certainly wasn't giving him regular vet care. I explained that I have 6 registered dogs that all receive regular and thorough veterinary care. She replied that she would require a visit to the farm to see all animals, with potential criminal charges for my neglect. Shocked and hurt, I requested that she provide me a best time and location to pick up our dog. Instead, she made more threats and began to hang up. I hurried to repeat my request, which was answered. Since one of the other dogs had a vet appointment that morning, I brought printouts of the dog's records to the SPCA, still wondering if she really was describing our missing dog. She had misidentified the breed of the dog and and rated his body condition as poor, a score 3 points lower than our veterinarian. She had made a huge deal about some ticks on a free roaming farm dog at the peak of tick season. In person, I came to the SPCA with two of my other dogs directly from their vet appointment. She couldn't help but applaud these young dog's condition. She refused to accept my printed veterinary reports, demanding reports direct from the vet, which I complied and coordinated. When I tried to explain the dog's medical history, breed characteristics, and recent care, she regularly interrupted and refuted assertions. 45 minutes of berating before sheriff animal control showed. After the dog was released back to me by the sheriff, I took him to the vet immediately. I continued to send her updates on the veterinary care and tried to get an appointment for the required farm visit with the sheriff and her My communications over the next 3 days were one call per day, that she never replied to until day of visit. When my girlfriend spoke with her, she described my one call per day as harassment. I was simply trying to provide and confirm receipt of our vet's assessment and schedule the farm visit. This farm inspection was eventually scheduled for two hours before their arrival . During the farm visit with the Sherriff, who was very nice and professional, she did not apologize for the repeated threats and accusations that were proven false if not ridiculous. If she had apologized, this Yelp review,my only review anywhere, would not exist. I told the Sherriff I would like to file a formal complaint. He said that since the SPCA was separate, there wasn't a complaint process through the county. I did not find any complaint process available through Fauquier SPCA and it appears the board is headed by her previous employer, so likely biased. So here we Yelp! As a long time trusted caretaker of animals and sometimes volunteering at SPCA's, I have never seen any person so brash and mistaken about their profession. Having listened to her care recommendations and seen her 4 dogs cooped up in her tiny office, I must refute her as an authority on dog care. Don't trust these people because they will just waste your time by calling you to come over and filling out the application. After you choose the pet and complete filling out the application, they won't call you back. When you follow up, they will make different stories to avoid the adoption. They will tell you that someone else already adopt the pet. Why would you waste your time if you cannot adopt the pet that you were allowed to choose? This kind of not for profit organizations are not actually a not for profit organization. Instead, they are for profit businesses. It happened to me in other shelters as well. They will let you fill out the application and they will never call you. Stay away. read more

My husband and I adopted a 10 month old female cat from them about 2 months ago. When we arrived, the facility was clean and filled with friendly and happy cats and kittens ready for adoption. The staff did an excellent job explaining the different cage cards and personalities of each potential pet so we could select the right cat for us. When we spent time with our kitten, we decided she was "the one" to go home with us! They provided a small bag of science diet cat food, some toys, and a medical record report indicating what treatment she had done (including a recent spay). I am a former employee and can say that I was very disappointed in the way they ran everything. My fiancé and I had to give up our dog a few years ago due to our situation. A year or so down the road, we were out of that situation and I made a connection with one of the available dogs and fell in love with her. We put in an application (I was still employed with them at this time), and we were denied because we had to give up our dog before. The director is very rude and unfair to lots of people and the managers will approve applications of people they know rather than taking the time to read other applications. Even if someone else would be a better home for the animal, they will still pick the people they personally know so don't keep your hopes up. The adoption process is unfair and half the time it does not take 48 hours they usually pick somebody same day, if you don't get a call, you more than likely got ignored. The animals are well taken care of but the adoption process is an unfair game. If you really want to adopt I would go elsewhere read more

I went to Fauquier SPCA late afternoon on a Friday to submit an application for a dog I was interested in. I was told it would take 48 hours to be reviewed and that there were no other applications for this dog. On Monday, I called at opening to find out the status of my application and was told that the dog had been adopted. They had given the dog to someone else without waiting the 48 hours I was made to wait. I asked why my application had been rejected and was transferred over to a second person who told me that someone had come in on Sunday with a dog that got along well with the dog that I had applied for so they thought "it was a better fit." I asked how they could possibly know if it was a better fit since no one had talked to me or interviewed me about anything. Apparently, if you already have a dog, you get priority treatment from these people. So I asked if I could adopt another one of their dogs that was older and had a large, open, oozing wound on its leg. "OF COURSE you can!" I was told. "So I'm not good enough for the dog I wanted, but I'm good enough for the dog you want me to have." My response after that is unprintable. read more

If I can put zero stars I would, because I adopted a kitten from them after a couple of days we start to note some patches in her ear, so we took the kitten to the vet and she tested positive for ringworm. As a pet honor, you know how difficult to get rid of ringworm. They should have checked the kitten because I asked them if she is healthy or has any problem. They told me none. read more

For starters I asked to see two different dogs and when I wanted to get on the dogs level and play with him they told me I wasn't allowed to sit on the floor or play with him. Terrible Kill Shelter that does not give frightened and disoriented dogs a chance in hell. They throw them in with other dogs and kill them if they growl. They don't notify the owner or co owner either. They just kill the dogs after saying they hold them for 100 days. I was working on getting a fence so I could go get them after my ex took them there. When I called to check on them they said they killed them already. They did it immediately. They were young, healthy, friendly, kind, dogs who were around my children and my small dogs with no issues. This shelter disgusts me. Please do not give them your support. A terrible shelter , I took my beautiful 3 year old female here as a last resort and explained to them that my husband had passed away a few weeks before from cancer , he was diagnosed to late and died sooner than anticipated we had four dogs . I managed to find homes for three and kept her as long as possible , but with foreclosure coming , having to move ,taking care of so much ,having to return to work and family I thought the spca could help with placing her for adoption and giving her a safe home. I explained it was very upsetting that I leave her but would continue to follow up and that I would continue looking for her a home and I myself take her back circumstances allowing . They ask I not visit that it might upset her but to call... I've wondered "did they already know what they might do to her ?) . She was young ,healthy , loved family ,children , she was very obiedent ,loving ,housebroken and a safe pet , everyone who saw her loved her she was sweet. I was told it would be a few days for her to settle . Less than a week later I called , I was told she had been UTHENIZED ,killed ! I became sick on my stomach I was so sickened at what they had done and will never forgive myself for trusting these disturbed people ! I still cannot tell anyone how I feel ,I cry often about her , what a horrible place , God knows how sorry I am that ever took her there , I never told my children and they think she is ok. These people are sick and certainly not qualified to make judgements about a animal. DO NOT TRUST THEM ..I would like to know how to have the killer who ordered my dog and im sure other innocent animals destroyed FIRED ? She and her observation people all need be replaced .. They also probably should be followed up on and maybe even investigated about their actions towards animals , I,ve wondered if they even took good care of our girl prior to killing her , I'll never know ... ! read more
