Fat Louie's is the perfect place to visit on a night out if you're adventuring with a group of people who don't know each other very well. Because they'll get to know each other pret-ty well as the night progresses. (I came with my housemate, a girlfriend, and a traveller I met on Couchsurfing.) Climb your way up their steep staircase and you'll surface to find a giant, dimly-lit space complete with a bar, snooker tables, and karaoke booths. We came to Fat Louie's for the karaoke, which is $20/hr for 2 people, and $30/hr for 3 to however many people you can cram into the room. Even if you've come with shy friends who have never braved the stage, the cheap beers and basics will have their tongues loosened in no time. There's an extensive collection of songs to choose from, including karaoke classics like 'Fast Car' to the latest pop anthems...in every Asian language imaginable. The accompanying video clips are also priceless. Think C-grade actors lip syncing to famous ballads (badly) with extreme soft focus. It's tacky and amazing. We had a few technical problems with the microphones (we may have spilled a drink or two on them...) but the staff were understanding and the time spent fixing the equipment didn't cut into our hour. There's a certain grunginess to Fat Louie's that not all patrons will appreciate. I'm talking about sticky carpet and toilet tiles grunginess, but don't let those factors deter you. And chances are you'll be too far gone on booze and bad music for it to matter.

    karaoke room!

Blink, and you'll miss it. There's nothing flash about the place, but it serves the purpose it was built for. You'll meet some characters here. There's some blokes who will tell you how you're doing it wrong, there's the guys who will watch you from their own game and scoff at how badly you're lining things up, and occasionally, you'll get someone who wants to help you and teach you a thing or two about playing angles. Some people who come here really know what they're doing with a pool cue, I tell you what. It's a thing of beauty to behold someone smashing three balls into three different sockets on the one hit. Pool table hire is $11.20 per hour before 5pm. It goes up to $16 per hour at night. Snooker tables are a bit more pricey- $13 per hour during the day, to $18 at night. One thing you should know is that these guys will only charge for the time you use. Play for half an hour, cut the hourly rate in half. Yes! The best day to come down is on a Sunday- you play for half price if you're a member.

Moments later, I take the shot and miss and the feeling is gone but it was good while it lasted. The only other time I get this feeling is when I imagine myself loading a cross bow to dust vampires and as Brisbane's kind of short on archery ranges, I inevitably find myself going back to Q-masters. This place isn't slick nor is it aspiring to be but it's a practical pool hall with plenty of pool tables and about six billiard ones as well. You can order basic pizzas, burgers, chips and beers if you get peckish but there's no formal dining area. All food and drinks are consumed on benches around the pool tables. For serious players, you can join a team and play competitively. The inter-club competition run on Monday to Wednesday nights and there are different levels from beginner to expert. I personally would like to see the expert level players play in tuxedos, drawing back the good ole days when billiard was a gentlemen's sport.

Instead, I saw the sign for Bean, and having passed it several times, I thought, hey, why not walk through this shady looking garage and dumpster (looked like one) and see what's up? I walked up to a chalked door and a short flight of stairs down into a kitschy, cute, nicely air conditioned cafe, and was greeted by a really eccentric but friendly barista. I was just looking for a cuppa to-go, but was rather tempted to plant myself and look around. The cafe isn't big, but there is a good amount of table space, either to study at or to play the many board games that this place houses! I was quite pleased at their game selection of Cluedo, Scrabble, Jenga, and more! This is also one of the few cafes in Brisbane that provide free wi-fi. So much win! As for the coffee, I've only had their skinny latte, which I do enjoy. For Brisbane, it is definitely good - a bit bold, but not overly dark, like I find the places around here. The coffee has a bit of a fruity or nutty aftertaste - I can't quite tell (must have it again!), but I would definitely have it again. I wasn't sure if they had food to offer, as I only saw some cupcakes on display, but it looked like they might serve sandwiches... Alleyway cafes seem to be very characteristic of Brisbane's hip cafes, and although my friends know me to always find these places with shady entrances, quite a few of them turn out to be good, if not intriguing! All in all, this is one of my favorite places so far - the ambience, board games, free wi-fi, and the barista!

Many of you may remember its previous incarnation of the dodgy Mustang bar, but gone are the sticky floors, childlike clientele and (unfortunately) the pool tables of old. It has been replaced with a relaxed but moody downstairs, industrial lighting teamed with leather couches add to the atmosphere in the dining hall. Here you can get some typical North American pub grub teamed with a lottery of 23 rotating ales on the back wall. I had the pig & fig pizza which was tasty and a decent size, you could as share it... My dining partners had the piggy back ribs & the pulled pork roll which they though the meat was perhaps a little mushy, whilst also still tasty. Downstairs from time to time you'll also have live music on stage as well as access to a shuffle board game plus a giant mammoth to go with its name sake... Once you wander upstairs, that's where the stark contrast happens, it's like a vibrant tropical courtyard garden popping with colour and an airy feel, the lounging areas are great as is the view onto the busy-ness of Anne street. You can also keep yourself occupied whilst drinking up here with bocci on the "lawn" and giant Jenga. All in all, I think it's got a great vibe & I'll be back!

We also tried one of the pizza's as was a bit disappointed as the dough in the centre was raw. Craft beers were delicious but the descriptions did not always match up with what we were tasting. The place was really clean, but the bathrooms need some ventilation. Feel bad for the mammoth in the room, it definitely has seen better days.
