During my most recent visit, I was refused the purchase of a four-pack of chocolate stout because I had accidentally left my driver's license in my gym bag. What concerns me is not the beer. It is the mindset that policy now overrides common sense. I am clearly well over the legal drinking age, had other identification in my wallet reflecting that, and am a regular customer who shops at your stores frequently. Yet the only response I received was that the manager could lose his job for exercising any judgment. This experience reflects a larger problem that has become increasingly common since COVID: an environment where rules, scanning, identification requirements, and corporate liability concerns have replaced basic human interaction and common sense. Employees are discouraged from making reasonable decisions, even when the circumstances are obvious. I do not fault the cashier. My concern is with a culture that places rigid compliance above customer relationships and personal judgment. As a result, my family and I have decided that we will no longer be shopping at your stores. We prefer to support businesses that still value people over procedures and trust over constant regulation and control. I was on the waiting list for a restorative yoga class, and often if someone doesn't show up, by the time the waitlisted people are notified, it's too late to get there on time. So I decided to just drive down there and see if there were any vacancies. The teacher who was set to lead the class was extremely rude and basically told me to leave. Although everyone who signed up showed up for the class, there was clearly enough room to fit in another person, and I was there plenty early and no one would have needed to rearrange their mats for me to fit in. Besides being snippy and very disresptectful in telling me to leave, she also stood in the lobby area and watched me as I was putting on my shoes. She said that was because people have taken the items for sale from there. I was in such disbelief that I contacted the studio owner about what I perceived to be behaior based on race. I could not have been more shocked when the studio owner then responded to me by telling me that she had contacted the teacher about this incident and the teacher said she was not a racist.
