I really loved having scones and tea for dessert. It was decent food. Maybe not overly memorable. But the atmosphere was nice and funky. That helped its rating in my mind.

We both had the Traditional Breakfast with smashed avocado added and while it was tasty, it was almost cold. Same with the coffees, both tepid as soon as they were delivered. We didn't wait long so I can't figure out how everything could be almost stone cold. The waitress was lovely and very accommodating, but we headed off to a different cafe for our second coffee as we wanted a hot coffee.

Having been here for a meal before, I had been quite impressed with the carvery, which offered a good value meal with a choice of meats and vegetables. Its position in Festival Park made it a good place to eat I was visiting the nearby cinema or Waterworld. On my last visit, I brought a friend, which was unfortunate, given what was to come. We walked into a restaurant full of happy diners chomping away. The carvery was all laid out and looking appetizing. We decided to go for the carvery and were told that due to staff shortage, the carvery was closed. I offered to carve the meat myself and was told I wasn't allowed to do so. Then, when we said we would order from the main menu, we were told there would be no food from there either. It was 1.15pm. On the way out, we were passed by diners on the way in. We watched them get seated and then served from the carvery. Hmm. Not sure what it all means. Except for a one star review from me.

I went Sunday with my lady and visiting friends. We were told it was a 30 min wait which was fine as there was seating outside to while away the minutes. We didn't end up having to wait that long though which was a nice surprise. We were seated in a booth close to the carvery and everything smelled wonderful, we ordered some drinks but had to ask again 10 minutes later but I will let them off as it was busy. The meal itself was lovely, would have been nice to see more of a variety of veg (mainly mash, cauliflower and carrots) some peas, sweetcorn or similar to color the plate would have been great. My major complaint was the crackling which I think I chipped a tooth on. It was so hard it was dangerous! I pointed it out to the waitress but it was laughed of a little. I would hope that was just a one off though Overall a good value experience with just a few niggles, just don't go hoping for anything unique as food wise I have had better for a similar price. Very nice location though.

The food is average, there's nothing wrong with it, it's just nothing thrilling. It's a large airy room above the Bluecoat arts centre, and the walls are therefore decorated with pieces of art from the centre below. As it's such an open space, unless it's busy, it can get quite cold - there isn't a lot of cosiness about the place. The food is locally sourced and homemade but I've experienced better in many other restaurants in Liverpool.

This is one of those difficult ones. What do you do when you like a place but have seen some…read moreshockingly awful reviews of it also? Who's right? Who had them on an off day, or who experienced a good day? It's come back to haunt me. One of my friends went to Papa G's in Manchester on my Yelp recommendation and proceeded to berate me because they had a horrible time there. It's not my fault! Anyway, I risk the same thing happening with Upstairs at the Bluecoat, the most literal name for a restaurant since... the word restaurant. I found it pleasant. Don't use it against me if you don't. Okay, the service wasn't quite as outstanding as I've experienced in some restaurants but it was pleasant enough all the same, it's not like they gave us dirty looks or tipped the food over our heads or anything. All the ingredients are locally sourced, something it prides itself on, and dishes include the likes of melt in the mouth tender lamb (again, I had to get my companion's take on this but they confirmed for me that it was good) and delicious poached salmon with pickled cucumber and potatoes that tastes both healthy and indulgent. Plus they do hot pot, great for those wintery days. They do a very worthy Sunday lunch here too, and the space is large and airy with 80 potential covers but can get a little chilly from time to time. And what is it with me and sticky toffee pudding? This place does a great offering too. Now before I click submit, I just want to be clear that I take no responsibility for any dreadful experiences you may have here. Maybe Upstairs is the Russian Roulette of restaurants. I had a good time... but will YOU? Dun dun duuuuuun...

It's easy to find, as St Elphin's 280ft spire - the third highest of any parish church in England - provides a perfect landmark. The pub is part of an attractive clutch of old buildings next to the church, and is Grade II Listed, although unfortunately there's a large Sainsbury's plonked opposite. Inside, it feels more like a country pub than a town pub: lots of tucked away seating areas (ideal for family or social groups) give it a cosy feel, with some old beams on the ceiling providing the right atmosphere. Real ale fans are well catered for with two regulars and three guest ales, although one of the latter was off on our visit. The food menu is extensive and features traditional pub grub, with main meals, baguettes, sandwiches and baked potatoes. There's a good vegetarian selection, too, and staff were friendly and helpful. The 10 minute walk to the pub from Warrington Town Centre passes several other old pubs, also serving real ale, on Buttermarket Street and Church Street, which would make for a perfect real ale pub crawl, ending at the Ring O'Bells. There's a bus stop a few yards away to get you back to the bus station, if needed!
