Ever since we discovered Farinas Ilocos Empanada, my family has become regular customers, especially the younger of my two daughters. We can't get enough of the deep friend empanada with egg inside, which should only be consumed hot.
There is some debate as to whether there is such a thing as Ilocos cuisine, compared to Pampanga or Bacolod for example.
Besides their empanada, Farinas also has bagnet, a deep fried pork dish not unlike crispy pata.
Health buffs will say that the two principal specialties of this store are far from being good for the body. Perhaps having bagnet and Ilocos empanada on a daily basis may not be a good thing, but as an occasional treat they're hard to beat.
One empanada qualifies as a meal-in-one. It's both tasty and filling, especially when doused with Ilocos vinegar. Eating one can be messy like Mexican tacos, one of my favourite fun foods.
The little Ilocano specialty restaurant is located at the far end of Dona Soledad Avenue, not too far from the Paranaque Doctors' Hospital, which is the best known landmark in the area. There are a handful of tables and chairs for dining, but I prefer to take out the empanada, which is too hot to consume when delivered right after cooking.
There is a window when the empanada is best eaten. Wait too long and the orange, tacos-like shell will lose its crispiness. Eat it too soon and you risk burning your tongue.
Farinas Ilocos Empanada restaurant is not air-conditioned. It's open air so it can get a wee bit too warm in these hot summer months. Otherwise, I would recommend this to my friends looking for something different than what the usual fast food joints offer. For its fun factor alone, I have to give it five stars. read more
