Busy grocery store on 16th Ave SW, convenient to stop by on the way out of town. While the variety may not be as big as the other chains, you should be to get what you need to prepare your meal. The meat department is always rocking with butchers who have been in staff for many years. They have a great supply of meats, and they are always ready to cut a piece of meat to size. They have experience and it shows. The front end staff are very able, but it can get crowded near the registers during the busy time. If you need help taking your purchase to your car they are always ready, and I do mean always. Nice place to shop if you're ready for good prices without all of the fluff. read more

4/5 stars for the level of customer service you get at Fareway. We were here on a Saturday afternoon to grab a couple of baking supplies and I think the employee to customer ratio was 2:1. Super convenient location for me and despite being a smaller store I could likely find everything I need here (food-wise). Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss was on sale at $6.99/6-pack so that was a sale not to be passed up. I didn't give the store 5 stars because I wish it'd get a remodel already. The store is dark and dingy to me and the aisles are narrow. Remember IGA stores? This is eerily similar. read more

Couldn't find any help today while looking for groceries. As I did make eye contact with someone working the self checkout, she looked away and was talking to a coworker. I thought she may not have seen me. I decided just to try another grocery store and put away the items that were in my cart. All she did was stare at me while leaving, not saying a word or acknowledging me. I realized she probably did see me. I do love fareway but it is frustrating to not be able to find help and when there is someone free they don't chose to help. read more

Local small super market serving Cedar Rapids. Friendly store with the basics but don't expect to find anything unique here. Their ham salad is not the best based on a recent purchase. Convenient and great store to pick up a few things on the way home. read more

Fareway is an awesome, old-school grocery known primarily for its full-service meat market and courtesy clerks that still carry out groceries to your car. The butchers in their white aprons, paper hats and sawdust covered floor, will cut & wrap your meat to order. Want a 1/2 lb. of slab bacon? Want fresh ground beef that's made in-store not at the packing plant? Want your chicken breasts cut in half and wrapped individually? No problemo! They use USDA Choice beef while most supermarkets sell Select which is a grade below Choice. The stores are small and uncluttered so you don't spend an hour getting a few things. The down side of being old-school is they don't carry all of the specialty items you'll find a big modern superstore, but the selection is more than adequate 95% of time. It amazes me that the last two remaining full service grocery stores left in Eastern Iowa, are both home-grown Iowa chains - Hy-Vee and Fareway. They have taken different approaches and I still love the Johnson Ave. Hy-Vee for their great specials and friendly staff so I shop both stores. Wal-Mart? No way! Here's the coolest thing about Fareway which most people don't even know: they match their competitor's ads. I don't mean only when you bring in the ad and ask for an adjustment, I mean the actual price on the shelf is reduced and without haggling. See that Hot Buy Hy-Vee has in their ad for 99-cent shredded cheese? Fareway has it too, marked down on the shelf (although sometimes discreetly). Fareway's own ads aren't as hot as Hy-Vee's but with their ad matching policy and everyday lower prices, they have everyone beat, even Wal-Mart...and with hundred times better service! We shop a lot at Fareway stores. We think their meat is the around. It therefore a surprise when we were charged multiple times for a couple of the items we got. Didn't notice it until we got home. We went back and Lisa gloomly refunded our $23. No sorry or we will check this out to see what happened or anything. Guess we won't shop at store #963 Anymore read more

After shopping here for years I thought I had it made. I no longer had to go to Hy Vee because fareway honored all sale prices in the Hy Vee ad. It was great. But a month ago or so I did my shopping as usual but when I got to the check out, the prices were not the prices I expected. I told the girl at the register that a few of the things I was buying were in the Hy Vee ad and fareway had always honored those prices in the past. She told me no that's not true. You have to bring in the ad to get HyVees prices. I told here I've shopping here for years and have never brought in an ad. They even had the Hy Vee sale items with special signage in front saying "competitor price". No longer. And according to the girl at the checkout, they have never done this! And the girl next to her agreed with her! They were more or less saying I was lying about this. I couldn't believe it. Weeks later I stopped at the fareway on 1st. Ave. And questioned them about the practice. They told me they honor all Hy Vee prices. No need to bring in the ad at this store. Also told me the 16th ave store got a new manager....so thanks to this new manager I will no longer be shopping in his store. This place on 16th ave no longer take in bottles and cans. So I'll just be going back to Hy Vee to do my shopping. Plus, I found Aldi to be a very nice place to shop also. read more

So, upon walking into the store, the smell of dirty dog or urine hits you first. I do not know what it is as this store has been open for about a month but the carpets stink. After walking through the small and always empty produce section in search of strawberries, I am greeted by a a display with pricing for strawberries only to find donuts and tuna?? I pass on the above mystery and move to the meat counter. Fairway has a great meat department, I am told. I decide to order the 2 for $8 london broils to throw on the grill along with some asparagus. I get home, do the normal salt and pepper to the steaks and observe they do not look quite right. Mind you I have cooked a lot of steaks over the years, London Broils not lacking in representation. Now comes the surprise, after taking them off the grill and allowing them to rest, I cut into what I am expecting to be a nice medium rare cooked steak. However, the meat crumbles apart at the touch of my blade..... Yes my friends, I feel as though I have been had. I am simply cutting apart a larger hamburger patty that was labeled a London broil and wrapped in bacon to conceal its inadequate self. Should I be so sad to not be able to cut away at a beautiful piece of beef that only cost me $6? Yes, because if I wanted a hamburger I would have asked for it!!!!! read more
