Best chinese around. Great egg rolls, general chicken, boneless spare ribs and goons. Serving size has reduced a bit in the years, PF rice is good but they could afford to put a bit more P in it. read more

You guys forgot my food I literally had just the bag what am I supposed to do with no food! Do you want me to starve to death???????

Most delicious Chinese food I have ever eaten. Quick and courteous service. Reasonable pricing. Portions are quite generous. Also has a fully stocked bar. Interior and seating is excellent. This is a must try place for a great meal you won't be disappointed. read more

This place is the only one for a while away I suppose they are lucky for that. I have eaten here four times and every time I hope that it is better but it's not. However I do stop in occasionally to get the crab rangoons.. the food taste freezer burnt read more

The issue is likely our expectations of what we have had here over the last 40 years but it's just not the same anymore and while everyone is friendly the food isn't the same. Which happens when a place changes hands. And granted we don't live here anymore so our memories are all we have to go on. Overall wasn't thrilled with anything we ordered and won't go back there on our next visit. read more

Looking for Chinese food in Rumford? You found it. Even a big message on their menu about MSG in their food, just in case you were wondering. Menu is what you'd expect and the inside is what you'd expect. Service was great, food was out quick and hot, server was fast to get my drink and meal order in, no hassles. Not overly busy but that may have been due to the snow storm. A lot of pickup and delivery orders so the locals know where to get Chinese if that's what they're craving. Check out the combination platters, I got #19: General Tso's Chicken, Crab Rangoon, and Roast Pork Fried Rice (pictured). read more

Far East Restaurant - Combo#19: General Tso's Chicken, Crab Rangoon and Roast Pork Fried Rice - Chinese Near Me - Mexico, Maine

We were seated and the waitress took our drink order ! At the time my husband step up to use the bathroom ! The waitress came back with our waters. He came back with in 2 minutes and said did you order ! I said I just did ! With in 3 minutes our pu-pu platter for 2 was on our table ! How does a pu-pu for 2 get ready in 3 minutes ? I can tell you how !The items were already mostly cooked before and they put them back in the dirty oil which they were using and warmed them up ! So not only were gross but they were so greasy that is all you could taste ! We camp near by and felt like Chinese but that wasn't what we expected at all ! read more

Far East Restaurant - General Tso Chicken plate. #19. - Chinese Near Me - Mexico, Maine

This is the worst food I've had from anywhere, ever. Everything was borderline burnt, dry, flavorless. The hot mustard that I paid extra for was yellow water. The crab Rangoon was so overcooked that the filling was dry and crumbly. Even the cabbage in the eggrolls tasted and smelled old, old. Everything seemed extremely old, like it was pulled out of the trash and cooked a second time. If I die from food poisoning, this restaurant is the source. They deserve 0 stars for taking my money and serving me garbage. read more

Far East Restaurant - Burnt old Chinese food - Chinese Near Me - Mexico, Maine

It used to be decent but was sold a couple of years ago. Apparently the new owners do not understand customer service. I went in with eight people and after being seated she handed out paper plates. Mid way through the meal I noticed the other people of smaller parties all had china plates. I asked why we had paper plates. "Oh!" she said, "Better for me! Too heavy!" The food was mediocre and I will never go back! What an attitude!! read more

The dumplings were fantastic! Everything else was meh. Crab rangoons were generic. They were ok. Chicken finger batter was tasteless and greasy. My husband said the General Tso chicken was gross. He asked for extra spicy and it wasn't even hot. When he found a long hair in his meal the owner simply said, it may be mine. Seriously?! She then came back and said she comped it. We got the bill and she took off $1.23. Wow! Thanks for nothing. Gross, will not be returning. read more

Consistent, good Chinese food. I appreciate the ease of ordering online and picking up the order at a specified time.

Food has gone down the tubes since the original owners sold it. Cold food. Tasteless food

I grew up in town and have frequented upon return many times, albeit it has been years. Tonight's take-out was extremely disappointing. The steamed shrimp dish contained 1oz of shrimp (hardly any!), the egg rolls were all vegetable and no pork, and the wonton soup was sub par at best. And the prices were higher than NY. It's unfortunate because this town needs options for dining, but this horrible. We won't return. read more

This is a staple in Mexico. Having grown up here the "Chinah Dinah" is always a must whenever I am back visiting family. The egg rolls are the best I've ever had! To go is always a long wait so you have to plan accordingly especially on a weekend night. I will always have one meal here whenever I am in town. read more

They say a good hamburger. ??? The egg rolls suck. It's like finding Waldo looking for the pork in them. Americanized food. Tasteless with no love. read more

The first thing that I try at a new Chinese restaurant is their wonton soup. This immediately sets the tone for the entire menu. It is such a simple yet significant soup in Chinese cuisine and an absolute delight when done well! Additionally, this is also where you are able to pick up on subtleties that might indicate what region the cook is from and suggestions about the pride that they take in their food. That being said, I have only had the Wonton soup here...I didn't feel the need to continue down their menu afterwards. Here was my problem with the soup: The broth had more sesame oil flavor than beef or chicken. Either they added too much oil or their stock was not very flavorful. I felt it was the latter. Their dumplings, I believe, were homemade. They were the most tasteless balls of unseasoned pork meat that I've ever had. I've had a variety of soup dumplings, here and in China, and these were the blandest I've ever tasted. They used canned mushrooms. 'Nuff said. I can't hold this against them because many places do it, but I hate the pink-stained pork spareribs they slice and throw in the soup. It's tough and tasteless. (My pork slice was shaped like Africa. Fun tidbit.) I don't feel the need to try them again. read more

Far East Restaurant - My Chinese-food litmus test. - Chinese Near Me - Mexico, Maine

No joke; (1) star is extremely generous. Unfortunately the former owner of decades had proven success with food and service that brought the masses; had to retire. Shame the new owners have drastically changed most, if not all recipes that tasteless, old from sitting, or just items that have no business mixing in with previous ingredients. We took them at their word that they were making changes and to please be patient after our first order of rice tasted old, beef was tough, chicken was dry and needed a drink with each bite to wash down. We gave the benefit of the doubt and attempted a second time about four months later. The results; the same, actually worse. We will not return ever. They have slaughtered a business that was working and making great money! If it's not broken, why fix it... My recommendation, steer clear because in addition to sub par food, prices have increased! What a steal, i mean deal! read more

Called at 8:30 at night asked about getting takeout and they told me they were out of chicken tenders and they could not make any more food that's absolutely absurd I wonder if the owner knows that the helps telling them that they're closed half hour before they're actually closed 6 thumbs down in one finger up as what I think of you guys I think they should fire all the help and hire new help probably if they knew they had such shity help that would fire everyone read more

Ok food but really poor service! Very long wait times for take out!! Service has gone downhill in the past 10 years.....

Prices and options were great for a smaller mill town Chinese restaurant and the service was great. The food, however, was only okay. I ate here twice last week while on a short vacation in the area. I have to say that the combination specials were tasty and a great value. If I could leave half a star...I would. In the past, my husband and I have eaten here several times. He sometimes eats here, for lunch. This time might be his last. We ordered crab rangoon's, General Tso's chicken, roast pork lo mein, and peapods with oyster sauce in a takeout order. I don't know what happened with their cook, but that meal was the most tasteless Chinese food I think we've ever had. The Rangoon's outer, crisp wonton was arguably the best part of the meal. General Tso's chicken is supposed to be spicy, not sweet and fruity tasting. Peapods reminded my husband of some nasty lima beans his mother used to shove on him when he was a kid; mushy, in a flavorless oyster sauce. And the lo mein, seriously needed help. We thought the Chinese mustard would help salvage the dishes we'd ordered, but alas, that too crushed our hopes. (You need to find a different vendor for your mustard or make it fresh!). To add insult to injury, the handful of fortune cookies thrown in our bag were all stale, despite being in their own little cellophane packaging. What a surprise. Didn't think that was possible. For the higher prices they charge here (I suppose because there aren't many other Chinese restaurants in town?) it's not worth it for us to have to suffer through a bad meal. For tasty Chinese food I think we'll end up going to a different town from now on. So disappointed in this one. (Even our cat turned her nose up to the chance to lick the sauce off our plates afterwards, and she never does that!) read more

Surprisingly good. For a small town this is exceptional. Good food and generous portions. A must eat.

Great boston style chinese food. Best to go on wed. Or during dinner when they're busy. They have things on the menu (i.e. pork strips in broth ) that you rarely find outside of the Boston area. Worth the stop. read more

I have visited the Far East several times. You get Exceptional quality every time. The Food is always made to order. Servers are attentive and professional. The drinks made by the owner Mrs. Chow are amazing and always tasty. Every time I try a different Chinese Restaurant, I get disappointed. I get food here, usually multiple times, when I go "home" for my summer vacation every year. I grew up in the area, and this is the best Chinese food I have ever had in my life. The eggrolls are amazing, truly the best I've ever had, and thus far I have yet to find another Chinese restaurant that makes them like they do here. They have awesome lunch/dinner combination specials that are very affordable, and you can order them at anytime, not just during certain hours. The combination specials are what me and my family members usually order. Sometimes my parents splurge and order the Seafood Warbar platter, which always leaves them enough to take home for a second meal. In fact, the combo specials also have really decent sized portions and can be two meals for some people as well. I love their chicken wings, chicken chow mein, boneless spareribs, fried wantons... I could go on... Their duck sauce is also the very best I have ever had in my life. I hear they also make great alcoholic drinks, but I rarely order alcohol when I go out to eat, so I have not yet tried one there. If you have never been to this place and are contemplating ordering out or dining in there, I highly recommend you do! read more

We ordered a huge amount of food for take out (my cousins got to choose and chose this) and it was terrible and pricey at that! I've been to this restaurant only a handful of times since it opened in the '70s and can't believe it's still open. The food is greasy, dated, overcooked and not like any Chinese food anywhere else but here. Just because it has rice in it, doesn't make a dish Asian and I AM ASIAN! This has taken Americanizing food to the next level. The choices are very Americanized: the egg rolls are large, oily and flavorless. The fried rice is hard, has very few fresh ingredients and overly soy sauced. The wontons and dumplings have pastry that is too thick and filling that has little authentic flavor. The sauces on most dishes are thick and too sweet. The sweet and sour uses canned fruit. I don't know if there are any fresh vegetables anywhere in the restaurant as everything seems overcooked. Even the fortune cookies are stale. Obviously, people like it or it wouldn't still be in business but don't eat here thinking this is Chinese or Asian cuisine because it's not. All of the seafood is frozen and it's Maine, for goodness sakes! It lacks effort, creativity or any semblance of authenticity. Do your waistline, arteries and taste buds a favor and keep on driving. There are better options to be had such as a lobster roll from Surry's in Dixfield or an Italian sandwich from Mountain Valley/Four Corners. read more

Horrible service and subpar food. My wife and I had heard the Far East was closing and we were quite disappointed because the food was really good. After an afternoon/evening of traveling through moose country we were hungry and decided to grab something to eat. My wife looked up the Far East and saw they were opened so she called and asked and was given a "yup." She read through some of the reviews and saw a LOT of bad reciews. Despite what we read we decided to be our own critics because there's no way really good food could turn in to really bad food so quickly. We headed to the Far East and immediately noticed there was plenty of parking. On a Saturday night? Odd as it was we parked and went in. Right away we noticed the first section of seating was closed down and a little Asian girl played about the booths climbing in the seats and on the tables. We were taken to our booth where I quickly scanned our table for signs of small footprints but didn't locate any. Scanning the menu I noticed that the menu had changed a bit. For one they were new menus and they were clean! We ordered drinks, an unsweetened iced tea with a lemon for the wife and a Mountain Dew for myself. We looked over the menu and decided what we wanted and our drinks were served. I noticed there weren't many bubbles in the Mountain Dew but I tried it anyway. YUCK! Super flat. Our waitress came back to take our order after my wife had spotted her hanging over the bar eating food with it dropping out of her mouth. We ordered our food and I wanted to say something about the soda at that point but she seemed to already be struggling with the order so I decided to wait until after the order was placed. Sure enough a couple minutes later she returns to go over our order once again. It was a fairly easy order of 2 combination dinners, egg rolls and chicken Lo Mein. When the food was finally brought out our server asked if there was anything else she could get for us so I found the perfect opportunity to ask for another soda. I explained to our server that it tasted really flat. Her response was, "It tastes fine to me. I don't drink much soda but I don't see an issue with it. I can get you another soda but it'll be the same because it all comes from the same machine." She walked up to the bar and asked for another soda and she could be heard sarcastically saying, "supposedly because it's flat." There was no supposedly about it. She brought out another soda and sat it on the table. No bubbles in the soda at all. Completely flat and the server was no where to be seen. The food was very different from what it used to be and just not very good. The duck sauce tasted spoiled, there didn't seem to be any cream cheese in the crab rangoons, the General Tso's chicken that I ordered extra spicy wasn't spicy at all but the sauce did have a weird tang to it. The chicken pieces were rubbery and some had a bit of a snap to the bite. The rice was bland, very dry and a bit chewy. My wife didn't complain too much because she doesn't like to complain but I could tell by the amount of food left on her plate that hers probably wasn't quite what she was hoping for either. When we had held down all we possibly could the server stopped by to ask how everything was. Before I got a chance my wife jumped in and said "good" just because she doesn't like conflict and didn't want me to be honest with her. I bit my tongue for as long as I could and then only mentioned the soda and how she was right about it still being flat. She told me she wouldn't charge me for the soda. She disappeared for a while and then could be seen walking around the restaurant talking loudly on her cell phone talking to someone about how they were going to working together again soon in Freeport. She talked about her homies, had some laughs, showed her displeasure with her job and life in general. When she finally finished up with her long conversation she decided to bring us our bill where I was still charged for the flat soda. We quickly payed our bill and got out of there as fast as we could. The food was horrible and the service was a lot worse. I wouldn't recommend this place to the bottom of my shoe. read more

While visiting family in Rumford from Massachusetts last weekend, my family took all of us out for dinner here. It was delicious! A local favorite restaurant with good food for a reasonable price. I recommend the Pupu platter, but we are not big fans of the egg rolls. We usually substitute those for extra beef teriyaki. I brought my family for dinner 09/06/2018 called for an evening reservations for 14 people when entering the hostess( the one in black) was very rude and didn't even take the time to show us to the table, to let you know the restaurant was not busy at the time, she decided to just point not even giving us menus or saying the waitress will be with you .the waitress turned out to be very friendly and nice and than when I went to pay there were 2 hostesses there 1 in a sun dress of sorts I guess ,the other in black, I than kept getting different totals of the bill 3 times and every time it went higher that's not what bothered me it was the way the hostesses treated me and when I asked to take the slip back to the table to check it out , the one in the sundress was rude and unfriendly and told me she will have someone else check she did not want me to take the slip ,I than paid the higher price which still didn't bother me, I than asked for the slip again and took it so I could check it out I took the slip to the table and after checking it ,I returned the slip, we got to leave and as I was walking out the one hostess in black hollows out in a very rude tone and said did you return that slip back to us and there was a number of people there to stop and look at me so if she wanted to make me feel small it worked but I will post in many different ways how rude and unfriendly the hostesses of the Far East restaurant of Mexico,Maine are ,so be prepared to maybe getting embarrassed especially if you get one or both of those hostesses if you question them and you are a senior ,so thank you for a very unpleasant experience and I am a long time resident not a visitor .I think you better show your hostess how to treat people, friendliness and kindness go a long way, and don't worry I won't bring my family again read more

My husband and I rarely go out. We heard this was a great place. We had their rangoons before and enjoyed them, we thought why not. We ordered , and I ordered the garlic shrimp and we ordered reg pepsis. We didn't get our drinks right away, but it was slightly busy so we didn't think anything of it. When it was delivered, our waitress put them on the table and took off. They were diet. We waited. She came back and we told her we didn't order diet. The waitress grabbed them up and quickly walked to the bar where the drinks came from. She again brought the drinks .We didn't see her again until the food came. Not one time did the waitress come back to check how our food was. If she had, I could have told her in the beginning of the meal, what she brought was not garlic shrimp. But tasted ginger. I told her when she brought the check that I couldn't eat my meal due to the flavor not being appealing at all and it didn't taste like garlic, but ginger. She said, ' yeah, it tastes like that.' I said I've never had it like that and didn't eat any of it. When we went to check out, I told the woman, who was the owner I guess, what happened. Instead of apologizing, she literally yelled across the crowded dining room to the waitress, ' did she eat any of it?' And we were told we won't be getting it free...... The waitress said , 'no, but didn't complain til the bill came. ' Of course we would have had she made any effort during the meal to see if it was satisfactory. Like most waitresses do. We were fully charged for an incorrect meal and treated quite poorly. We will never go there again. read more
