Fancyburg park lives up to its name - "fancy." I think it's a great idea to visit these kinds of amenities in the surrounding suburban communities to see what's available. I was surprised to see shuffleboard courts. And, while they were not in use today it looks like they've seen a lot of use in their day. That's a different kind of unique amenity that not a lot of parks have and it's good to know it's here in the event that I might want to participate one day. It appears there is an equipment shed for the games so there must be regular, staffed hours for this activity - would have to look into this more. I noticed what appears to be a large stone construction shelter house. There is a spacious and well-equipped children's playground, with plenty of modern equipment and nice soft landing ground beneath it. A far cry from the asphalt of my childhood. There is also a story walk that has been installed at Fancyburg Park which is a really super cool way to introduce kids to the joys of reading. I'm glad to see that a lot of public spaces are incorporating these kinds of things. It gives families something positive & educational to do together. There are two enormous, sunny, and level Great Lawns in this park. At the time of my visit there was a kids soccer game underway, and lots of parents watching along the sidelines. It felt as if there was a real sense of community going on at this park and leads me to believe that the citizens get a great experience here. Fancyburg is now on my list of great smaller sized community public parks in the greater Columbus metro area. read more

This is a pretty popular park - it always seems to be hopping! There's a lot to do here. If you're interested in sports, there are tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, shuffleboard courts, and the like. A large shelterhouse is available for rental, and there's a nicely sized playground area, which is divided into three sections: natural play area in the wooded area, an under 5 play area that offers some accessible options, and a 5-12 area. There are slides, swings, things to climb, musical/sound features, and more. Around the playground is a StoryWalk that changes periodically. A paved walking path offers another nice opportunity to enjoy the green space. There is a parking lot, but it seems to fill up easily - there are nearby neighborhoods where you can use street parking or walk from, depending on how you're traveling. read more

This is huge and has lots of ballfields, plenty of benches, tree-lined paths, and open green spaces. Of course, we were here for the playground. Playgrounds, actually. Three age-appropriate ones right beside each other. Well-maintained, with lots of things to do. Baby K loved it. It also has bathrooms, always a plus for old dads. This is a great city park, with a lot and plenty of street parking. Room for all sorts of activities, and we will be back for the playground. read more

Love this park! It's great for kids of all ages. I particularly like the section for toddlers. It's bigger than most playgrounds and perfect for kids 2 & under. In addition to the playground, there are tennis courts, bocce ball, soccer fields and a ball diamond. There is also a small nature area and short trail. One of the things that gives this park 5 stars is the fact that it is often shaded!! There are also restrooms and picnic tables. read more

A miniature Thompson park tucked between affluent sub-divisions in central UA, Fancyburg It is geared towards the young, the old, and neighborhood aerobaholics. For the young there is a sizable playground. Made of "Fisher Price" plastic and bright colors is a complex of slides, ledges, connectors and the like to exhaust even the most sugared up, caffeinated kiddo in town. For those a bit older are baseball diamond that look designed for little league and younger. In great shape, they don't seem configured for older leagues like the ones in Thompson. For the old there are tennis courts. For older there is a line of shuffleboard courts where the rowdy jocks of the sports certainly whoop it up. This is a novelty I haven't notice north of Orlando. For my fellow aerobaholic there are running trails of asphalt that circle the park with several forks allowing diverse routes. As with other sport parks, there are resting benches and pull-up bars stationed through out. The park is not that much of a looker. The thin border of wetlands encircling it fresh with brush and down trees bring some nature to the park, but this stands in contrast to the expensive houses in the background making an awkward juxtaposition. The grounds have too much open space which is not always bad thing though it does produce a baren emptiness running by. The trees are too young--I say about 20-25 years old--to produce much shade. So I say it is good for neighborhood pastimes more than it is for a destinated getaway. read more

This quiet, 25-acre park is a nice reprieve from the larger Upper Arlington parks. Like all the others, it is dog-friendly and the usual leash laws apply. Dogs must remain on the leash between 8AM and 5 PM in the winter and 8 to 8 PM in the summer. The city owns and manages Fancyburg, so contact Upper Arlington if you are interested in reserving one of the shelters for private events. The picnic areas are equipped with barbecue grills, restrooms and a shelter house. The park also has well-maintained sports fields, two baseball diamonds, a playground, multi-use trail, four tennis courts and eight shuffleboard courts. It is not unusual for the park to be packed with family reunions and birthday parties during summer weekends, but otherwise, it is a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. read more

This was a very nice park, but it should NOT be listed as a dog park. There are no areas where your dog can go off leash. Big sign at the entrance states dogs must be leashed at all times. read more

A great playground for kids as it has two parts. One side is perfect for your 5-10 year olds while the other works great for your 1-4 year olds. Technically a 3 & 4 year old can play on both. They have little housed to play in as well. The downside is the lack of swings. They only have 2 toddler swings and 2 kid swings. I have 3 little ones so I have the same problem as I do at home. One kid angry or frustrated about not being in a swing. They have a shelter house, walking trail, and shuffle board courts as well. read more

The park is beautiful, quiet and well-groomed. Dogs are out of control! I used to take my son here to play on the playground and baseball fields--we no longer visit to play due to a few dog owners' lack of control. Several times I've had to pick up my son as dogs charged the playground without an owner in sight. And more than a few times, dogs off the leash during leash law hours. No enforcement whatsoever. Also, playing frisbee in the big open fields, I noticed not everyone cleans up after their dogs. It's great to have this park within walking distance of my home. If you can't control your dog, please leave it at home. I have two dogs that don't always listen--so I don't bring them to the park. read more

The playground here is really nice. It has a little tunnel to crawl through, a great big tunnel slide, a few other smaller slides, a see saw like balance beam looking thing, those rocking things whatever they're called. It's pretty big and my son loved it. It's one of his favorites. Right near it is an expensive soda machine, real bathrooms, the shuffle board court and a trail that goes through the small patch of woods on the edge of the park. The best part of this park is the dog park. Dogs are allowed off leash at dusk when there's barely any daylight left so if you're quick, you can squeeze in a little bit of play time for your dog before it gets completely dark. Whooptee do, they gave you a few minutes in the park after everybody's left. BUT, it's good for a little while anyway, and when you're at the park, there's lots of passing dogs to pet. There are a LOT of dogs here. There's also a couple ball fields including a baseball diamond. That's kind of rare. Park designers seem to think everybody plays soccer because that's the only field I ever see at parks. read more

Fancyburg Park was a gift to the City of Upper Arlington from Benn Blinn and his wife, Liora. Benn Blinn owned and operated the Benn Blinn Sign Co., a purveyor of roadside billboards. Fancyburg was his personal playground. In winter it featured an ice sculpture created by a hose mounted on a frame 25' high and featuring colored lights inside the sculpture. In the 1950s and 1960s, winter weather was freezing, contributing to the bulk of the sculpture. In summer, Benn flew kites from Fancyburg. All of his kites - which he built on the premises - were box kites with wings. Some were 4' high and 6' wide; some were 8' high and 12' wide; the big ones were the heavy lifters. He flew the kites on 100lb test fishing line which played out from a spool on a heavy wood frame. There was a mile or more of line on the spool which was controlled by a half-inch electric drill. He would launch the first kite from 100 yards away from the spool. When there was 500' of line between the spool and the kite, he would pull a loop into the line and attach a brass ring then tie the next kite to the brass ring. I remember occasions when he would have as many as 8 kites flying over various parts of Fancyburg. They would rise to the altitude of the eastbound approach to Port Columbus and light plane pilots would often chase them, occasionally breaking the line with their wings. The big kites were flown at night. Benn would mount 6-volt lights in the kites which would dance around in the nighttime skies, often engendering reports of UFOs over Upper Arlington. My Dad was on the Port Columbus Aviation Commission and was despatched to investigate the activity over Upper Arlington. Some pilots conjectured that the kites were flown on cables which could slice the wings off airplanes. My siblings and I went with him and soon were recruited as assistant kite fliers - and builders - at Fancyburg. It was an experience I will never forget. I should hope that the City of Upper Arlington would commemorate Benn's activities at Fancyburg - perhaps on a replica "Blinnboard" as his billboards came to be called. read more

I love this park. It is my favorite out of all the parks in UA. It has just enough trees (well maybe a few more would be good) and enough wide open space. The multiple park benches are placed throughout the park strategically so that you can sit and relax and get a new and beautiful view from so many different angles. I feel safe, for the most part, when I walk at night. I would like to suggest just one, no more than two low light lantern lights in the middle area of the park.
