The cashier did call for a manager and we waited for close to 10 minutes and no one showed up. I approached a lady who was adjusting clothing items and asked her was she a manager. The lady said, No, but here is a manager right here. I said, that's the lady who was at the other cash register. First of all the manager heard the man cashier call for a manager and second why did she let us stand their instead of identifying herself as the manager. Does she not know her position at the store? When clothing items have dirt on them they should be discounted and not returned because you are cleaning items that you paid laundry detergent for. The store was packed for no real reason, but that's of course not their fault. What was their fault was the filthy floors and baseball and other cards and boxes all over the ground at checkout, and the 20 minutes+ it took to checkout! I counted at least SEVEN people who worked here yet nothing was getting done in a prompt manner! There were four checkout lanes open and being used, and the dozens of people in line waited forever for a store WITH EVERYTHING PRICED AS A DOLLAR to checkout! The credit card machine took about 2 minutes to take my payment that usually takes seconds. To top it off, the parking is packed and sucks as well. While I was in the store, I spoke with the manager, who told me I would need to add two items to my purchase in order to receive the discount. This was very misleading because it made it seem like that was the only way to qualify for the promotion. I ended up returning to the store to get a refund, but the manager gave me a hard time and told me that I was supposed to let them know about the discount beforehand. Since she was the manager and appeared to know how the promotion worked, I feel like I was given misleading information and was then made to feel as though it was my fault. It seemed like she was intentionally trying to prevent me from receiving the lower price.

My dad lives very rural, in the middle of the country so we did not expect a huge turnout but there were people in line waiting with a constant flow of people both days. Day 1 is suppose to be full price as listed yet several of my friends went to the sale and were ready to pay the full price listed and only ended up paying 1/3. Seems like they were wheeling and dealing on day 1. Which we did NOT agree to. WHAT?? On day 1 you asked $20 for something listed as $60? My dads riding lawn mower was priced at $1400. It didnt sell the first day so I knew it would go for $700 on the 2nd day. When we got our itemized list of what sold we saw that the lawn mower sold for only $300!! a 12 piece oak amish dining room set sold for $100, that was a 1/8 of what it was listed at. We paid $1500 for their "fee" and a 65/35 split. Then told that we didnt have to pay thr $1500, that the fee was asked for if the home was determined that it would bring in a profit. When we received the check and itemized list the $1500 was taken out of the profits and the remainder was done at the split. We ended up after all the work and back and forth with $400. a full 3 bedroom home! The itemized list left out A LOT of pieces that were no longer in my fathers home but were not on the list as sold. I asked if anything was going to be taken for consignment at their store and was told no, so not sure where these items went. My father lived very simply so we were not expecting a huge result but really felt we were taken advantage of and it was a HUGE waste of time. I put in a lot of man hours and had I know I would have either A. let them do all the work or B. Did the work and held the sale myself! NOTE-I have been told by multiple people who frequent their sales and many others, as well as people who have hired them in the past, that they will have their regulars (*who resell) come and give them the deals on items. I've visited many Salvation Army stores throughout Chicagoland, but this location has been by far…read morethe most unwelcoming and problematic. Beyond the disorganization and extremely high prices, the most troubling issue is how customers are treated, especially those who are African American, Hispanic, or simply appear as if they don't belong in the eyes of the staff. There is a repeated pattern of racial profiling and false accusations. I've personally witnessed several incidents where African American customers were followed around the store, accused of switching price tags without cause, and treated with clear suspicion. In one incident, a young woman held clothes up to herself over her outfit to see if they would fit, since there is no dressing room. A staff member immediately accused her of trying to steal. That level of hostility is completely inappropriate. This is a thrift store, not a high-security facility. Ironically, most of the staff are minorities themselves, primarily Hispanic women who have worked there for many years. Yet they continue to target their own community, along with African American customers, creating an environment of constant judgment and control. One particular woman, who has been there the longest, insists on always being at the register and refuses to let anyone else take that position. That kind of control is concerning, especially when it seems to be tied to who gets followed, accused, or mistreated. On a personal note, I experienced this behavior when visiting with my boyfriend, who is African American and a practicing attorney. He was followed through the store and accused of altering a price tag, with absolutely no evidence. When we raised our concerns to staff, we were completely brushed off. In addition to the unacceptable treatment of customers, I believe the Salvation Army should conduct a full audit of this location. The prices are far beyond what is reasonable for a secondhand store, and there are real concerns about whether items are being priced and tracked appropriately. The way some employees behave, it is as if they are personally losing money. There is no other explanation for the level of aggression and defensiveness we have seen from them. This store does not reflect the values the Salvation Army promotes. The staff operate in a culture of suspicion and blame, treating people especially minority shoppers as if they are criminals rather than individuals simply looking for affordable clothing and household items. I sincerely urge Salvation Army leadership to investigate this location thoroughly. What is happening here is not only unacceptable, it is harmful to the very communities the organization is meant to serve.
