Very good rmv. Professional employees. Long lines that take forever but overall good staff who use common sense. Amen to that

14 counters, only 4 have workers working. Place is packed. Its not even lunch time. These employees of the state really are something.

After less than 10 minutes I was called over to a window. There were 2 women there to help me - 1 was in training. They were very friendly and quickly reviewed my documents. They checked everything carefully and quickly processed my small boat registration. After about 10 minutes, I left with my new registration and sticker. Thank you!!

I left hoping I wouldn't have to return for a long time. Long story short, if you have to go here... look over the required items carefully and mentally prepare for a crappy experience. Essentially, this place serves the same role as the Registry of Motor Vehicles, just for boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles. Why they don't just combine the two roles and save the state some money is beyond me. I recently went here, after buying my first boat, to register it and change the title. I used the Mass. Environmental Police's website to check that I had what I needed, apparently I missed an item. In addition, I needed to go to a notary certify a change on one of the papers. The missing item... the sales tax I paid on the boat, a week prior. That's right, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts couldn't figure out a way to look up the sales tax I paid to... the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, unless it was by me printing out a receipt at home and hand carrying it to them. Genius! As for the notary, how tough is it to have a list of local notaries for the customer to go to. I am sure they turn people away daily for these items, and they never bother to improve the process... why, cause "it's not my job." Eventually got the boat registered, but as I left that day I heard a customer ask, "How often do these go right the first time?" She chuckled as she said, "Not many!" That should tell you a lot.

Its always been a running joke how beaurocratic, frustrating and rude the DMV system is. Rhode…read moreIsland, and specifically this office, takes to to the next level! The dmv is as bad as the roads in this state! First, let's start off by saying their online chatbot is fucking useless. You'd do better searching their confusing website than their confusing chatbot ... which isn't really a 'chat' ... it asks you what you need and then spits up links to the webpage, which aren't relevant. It seems that you might only get the info. you are looking for if you intentionally asked it a different question. Me: What time does the Middletown Office open?' Chatbot: "You can easily renew your motorcycle registration online using the following 118 steps with 3 forms of ID and 16 utility bills.' Me: "What flavors of ice cream are most popular with tourists from Hawaii?" Chatbot: " The hours of operation are M-F from 8:30 - 4 p.m.' The only appointment I could get for the service I needed was 26 days out and the service needed to be done within 30 days. No wiggle room. The employees here belong in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Seriously, they are next level stereotypical of a DMV douche. They bark at you if you don't have everything thete, despite the website almost giving no guidance on what to bring. They'll always find a form you don't have which you need. They show no mercy if you tell them you need something done within a time line. There is zero customer service, helpfulness or shit ... even compassion. These are humans who take glee in telling you to fuck off and seem to enjoy playing the part of a souless robot. Imagine if HAL from 2001 A Space Odessy was covered in bad tattoos with giant hoop earings. That's the vibe here. Beyond treating everyone in line like a literal turd in a punch bowl, the system is just inefficient and lame. This filthy little strip mall office is designed to make the ghost of Musolini smile with joy at how beaurocratic and frusterating anything you come here to do is. Most people would actually rather get a root canal than go to the DMV ... its an actual statistic. The Middletown Rhode Island office takes that to the new level.

This was the only spot available for a next day reservation so I made the 1.5 round hour trip. I was prepared with all the paperwork needed to get my son rolling for his learner permit. Start to finish, including waiting in the first queue, was only 45 minutes. That's freaking amazing. Don't hesitate to grab a spot here if it comes up sitting online reservation availability. I had spent an hour and a half at the Cranston DMV the day before and they were not even close to calling our number. Staff was pleasant, patient and efficient. They have two security guards which I thought was excessive. Nope. A customer came in two hours after his reserved appointment , was turned away and he was pretty heated. They are, in fact, very needed. Also, these employees seem motivated to help and keep things moving. They don't make the rules. Read up on the DMV site to see what's needed, read all the fine print on the forms, be prepared and it should be smooth sailing.

I was gifted a preferred plate and needed to make a trip to transfer them to my vehicle. I may have been able to do this via the mail, but since I had a narrow timeframe, I opted to go in person. Reservations for the main location in Cranston generally book 2-3 weeks out. I made 2 appointments for the same day, one for the morning and the other for the afternoon in case I needed to gather additional information and didn't want to wait another 2-3 week for an appointment. One good thing about COVID is that it forced a restructuring of the DMV, which ended up being better for customers and employees, so many of the updates are still in place today. Step 1: make your reservation online for the day, time, and location you want to visit Step 2: arrive during your scheduled time Step 3: security will ask to see your confirmation before allowing you access to the building Step 4: wait in the check in line and hope that you have all of the forms and documents you need to get whatever you came for done Step 5: get called to the check in window (there are 4 of them) Show the employee behind the plexiglass your confirmation number, hand over your paperwork and forms for them to review and validate. If you have everything that you need, you receive a deli style ticket with a number on it and get to proceed to the upstairs waiting area. If you don't have all the paperwork and forms you need, you'll need to straighten that out before you go any further Step 6: wait in the second floor waiting area. The seats are so worn out that the faux leather is completely work off, leaving a spongy foam cushion to sit on. Even with an appointment, I waited 40 min for my number to be called Step 7: when your number is called, proceed to the numbered booth/window the automated system told you to enter and hand your paperwork over to the employee sitting behind that plexiglass. This person may or many not be friendly, but as long as they can take care of what you went to the DMV for, that doesn't matter. Pay your fee, collect your receipt, and leave.
