Grand Hotel Piazza Borso - Welcome

    Grand Hotel Piazza Borso

Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa. Disappointing Service…read more I would love to have rated this hotel higher. A classic Italian structure from 1862, it is built around a huge 4 story central atrium called the cloister. The last renovation was very well done maintaining the design themes while bringing the place up to modern standards. Our room was quite large with enough space to lay it out a small suite. It was beautifully furnished with both antiques and contemporary furniture. The housekeeping staff was first rate. The rest of the staff was another story. Our impression is that they felt it was a privilege for us to be allowed to be in the place. One evening we sat down in the atrium area to play cards. The wait staff attended to all the nearby tables and ignored us. After an hour, I went up to the room to get a beer that I had bought outside. In less than five minutes, the manager was at the table to tell us that a waiter had complained that what we were doing was not allowed. My response was not heated, but I was clearly very annoyed and unhappy. After telling me that we had been ignored, he backed down. In that case there "was no problem". The maître d' of the dining room displayed a similar attitude. He strutted about rather pompously ignoring diners after he had pointed out their tables. On our free day, we went down to breakfast around 9:00. At 9:30, he stopped by to hint strongly that we should go even though breakfast ended at 10:00. He said in plain English :"Two minutes!" The breakfast was worse than a bargain hotel breakfast in the states. Hot food was served cold. Cold meats had no flavor except for the smoked salmon. It tasted fishy. Selections were limited. By 9:00 they stopped bringing out fresh food. Even earlier, selection was very limited. There was no indication that guests could order omelets or fried eggs until people at another table did so.

The main entrance is on the side street but once you push through the revolving door, you'll find yourself just steps away from the gorgeous center courtyard which is used for weddings and gatherings around the fountain. Smart people designed a retractable roof over this section so it is available rain or shine. Check in is smooth and easy assuming you have made a reservation and within moments I was on my way to my room. I got there about noon and thankfully my room was ready as I needed a nap from the travel. I had what they call a deluxe room with a view and it was lovely. Large with a balcony overlooking the Piazza San Franseco, it had a king sized bed, desk, mini fridge and a pot for boiling water for tea, no coffee. The bathroom was great stocked with toiletries, a decent shower, heated towel rack with plush towels and a toilet that required a master control panel. What's that, you say? Yep. This toilet comes with a control panel that had it doing all that a toilet should and then some. My favorite feature was the light inside, perfect for those middle of the night visits. Breakfast was also included in my room rate and is served until 10 am in a lovely room on the first floor. It's buffet style and includes eggs, bacon, pastries, cheese, cereals etc and was just ok. I came toward the end of the time and the food wasn't warm any longer and the coffee was not good at all so my advice is go early. Pricing is fairly reasonable as well. My two night stay, with breakfast, ran me about $450 US for a deluxe room, which is a comparable rate to other hotels of this caliber. Please note that there are cheaper rooms as well if you don't want a view or a larger room,as this was an upgrade. Perfect location for your stay in Palermo.

The hotel is at the top or bottom of a very active street. Restaurant, bars, stores, and cultural sights and anything else you can imagine. Valet parking is offered through and outside service and it really is a burden taken off your shoulders. The hotel is on a semi-restricted street and the GPS will not make your life easy. I parked nearby and walked it and had the valet guys grab the car for me. The room is comfortable and efficient. The one drawback for me was the advertised balcony. If I knew this was what I was getting I would have paid more and got a room that overlooked the street. The hotel provides you with and included breakfast that you have to sigh up for due to Covid, but it is a pretty nice spread. Eggs, bacon, croissants, deserts, fruits and the list goes on. I was very impressed. An affordable and comfortable stay in the heart of Kalsa. The staff is amazing as well.

The staff is…read moreincredibly rude. we had 3 rooms booked and had said we were arriving at 9pm and once there the hotel said we couldn't eat at the restaurant because it was full, when they should give priority to hotel guests. The concierge doesn't help us find another place to eat and just sits there while at almost 10 we are in front of the reception not knowing where to go eat. The rooms are disgusting I will attach pictures. The concierge calls us at 1 am to ask us about a missing ID that had already been sent by email. The bathroom has hairdryers from the 15th century. Andiamo a mangiare all'albergo davanti. L'unica persona cordiale e gentile è Antonino.

POSITIVES: A…read moreBeautiful 18th century hotel with all the old Sicilian charm. The hotel has lovely large rooms and hallways. It's in very good condition, albeit the white furniture is getting worn and some wear is starting to show on walls and doors. There are some lovely large shuttered doors that open to a nice balcony where you can stand on a nice evening and enjoy a glass of wine. The hotel is a bit difficult to find, but it's right near the renowned street market and main roads to shop on. The staff are wonderful and helpful and there is a restaurant attached that has a nice buffet breakfast as well. So the NEGATIVES: The hotel is not at all sound proof. You can hear furniture moving in the floors above as well as people talking outside. The BIGGEST NEGATIVE! Is that the hotel is located in Ballaro area. This is were the Algerian gang Black Axe operates...I'll let you google them or refugee Palermo. We were not aware of this issue when looking for a hotel, and no other reviewers mentioned this. We didn't stay out late or much past sunset when they are all starting to hang out on street corners near the hotel. I went around the backside of the hotel to go find a store to buy some water and there were little rooms or old stores that a lot of them were sitting in. Scary. The other negative was as we walked through the street market one street over from the hotel during the day and ventured up one more road, it was like 3rd world...Garbage everywhere, people selling their used stuff. I've never seen anything like it. We thought we made a huge mistake coming here. Just stay on the main touristy roads and it's ok, but we wouldn't stay here if we knew the area was so bad.

The front door of the hotel is locked due to it being in a poor, unsafe area. We did not feel safe so we didn't want to risk going for a walk around the city at night. The wifi connection is terrible and there were two clearly visible insect traps in two corners of the room. The next morning my wife and I searched and found a better hotel to stay at. Hope this helps anyone planning their next trip to Palermo!
