The Mayflower Hotel

Nesting amongst the yacht clubs, the Mayflower is a little gem of a pub with hotel accomodation…read moreabove. There is a large beer garden, fabulous in summer to sit outside with a glass of pimms and some of the potato wedges which come with a mean sweet chilli sauce! The food is average, quality having depleted in recent months, a change of chef possibly??? Bar food is reasonably priced and they also have a resturant which is fairly pricey but clearly better quality food. The pub is clean and modern with a good selection of beer on draught and the inside seating is mainly wooden benches. In the winter there is a fantastic log fire, ideal for warming up around after a walk along the sea wall, that is if you can get anywhere near it!

The menu has pasta's,curries, burgers, fish, chinese dishes and traditional British. Something for everyone. There is an okay wine list, bit pricey perhaps. There is a large garden to the rear with a play area for children of all ages. There is also a bbq on offer in the summer months. The mayflower can get very busy in the summer when the sailing crowd descend in their droves. The rooms are decent, but the decor a bit tired.

Had some pork scratchings while waiting for my friend, they were tasty with ample apple aauce. Shared with my friend a pork roll and toastie. Both were above and beyond the stanrd. It's like walking into Grandmas house- very comfy and cozy, displayed glassware, and wonderful smells!!! We sat at a window seat so we could people watch, and ordered the goat cheese/croutons as an appetizer, tomato soup and slaw for my lunch and hubs had the 'streaky bacon' which was a wonderfully tender ham steak with apples and roasted veggies. It was all very tasty, I had a glass of wine and hubs had a local beer. 46 pounds total. We love their farm to table meals and we'd definitely be back. Service was friendly and efficient.

As our plans changed, I canceled the reservation about a month ago and received cancellation confirmation email however no refund. I have been calling the hotel weekly for refund at late night and early morning hours from California. The manager is supposed to take care of this but the front desk staff cannot get a hold off the manager. I left him another message at 4:30 am in California (noon in U.K.) hoping the manager will be around. I was again told he is not around and "will call me back" in an hour. No call back again. Frustrated, hope you don't find yourself in this situation for your refunds.

Rooms were clean and very comfortable, if rather 'chintzy'. There's a gym etc and spa - with swimming pool, sauna, steam room and whirlpool. Breakfast is served in a room overlooking the beautifully manicured grounds and consisted of a cold continental buffet and then waiter served hot food (choice of full English, kippers, porridge etc). The hotel is very near the ferry terminal for Isle of Wight ferries and a short drive to Lymington itself. There's a nice pub though on the way to Lymington (called the Waggon and Horses?).

I love the whole vibe and have to say we didn't see much of the New Forest on our three day break due to our reluctance to leave the comfort and gorgeousness the hotel and our hideaway room offered us, a log burner, a claw foot tub and complimentary dvds thank you very much! I have to say that if I'm being critical I liked this particular Pig less than the other two I have visited. The food was great and the staff attentive as usual but the grounds and gardens are much smaller here than the other Pigs and for me one of the joys of these hotels are wandering around the kitchen gardens. The stable yard rooms were also close to the train line and the staff car park which meant that there was more noise disturbance than we have experienced at others. Would still heartily recommend staying at the pigs though.

We were attracted to the usual two meals for £9.95 and thought it would make a change from Wetherspoons. We tipped up not expecting the place to be very full nor did we reserve a table. Wrong on both counts, the Red Lion was very busy (it was a Saturday night) and we really should have reserved a table. That said the waitress was very helpful and after a 15 min wait we were called to our table. We were in a party of four and two of us had lasagne, one had scampi and one steak pie. All the food was really good and the general consensus was that it was above average for the price. We also had starters and I can heartily recommend the goat's cheese parcels. There was a good selection of drinks with a couple or real ales such as Abbot. I guess the drinks were normal hotel prices and pretty reasonable. The restaurant itself was very pleasant and the staff could not have been more helpful. The food was piping hot and served in a timely manner. Well worth a visit if you are in Fareham.

Accessible entrance and lifts are in the lobby. Stairs were also easy to find and use. It is clean, bright, and has a relaxed ocean vibe. Our room overlooked the harbor, we could see the Queen Mary 2, and it was quiet. There were binoculars in the room that were fun to use! We were on the 5th floor so during the day and evening we could hear the chairs and furniture scraping the floor in the rooftop bar (on the 6th floor). Not terrible, but next time I'd prefer not to be on the fifth floor. The bed was comfortable but oddly the comforter barely fit the bed - we had to sleep in the center of the bed because the comforter was not wide enough to reach beyond the edge of the bed when we weren't in it. There cannot be an outlet in the bathroom by law, so using the hair dryer was also a challenge. There is a big full length mirror near the bathroom, but no outlet nearby and the hairdryer cord was not long enough. Fortunately there was a nice makeup mirror in the bathroom I was able to move and could prop up on the tissue box on the desk to see my hair while I dried it. Keeping the makeup mirror on the desk (where there is natural light) is a good idea because the lighting in the bathroom is terrible. Loved the chairs and colors in the room. Plenty of closet space and drawers. There is also a snack closet - look for the price list! We ate at the rooftop bar twice. When we arrived in the afternoon we had drinks and a pizza - both great! Jon was wonderful & helpful! We came back for breakfast the next morning. The buffet was perfect for me - the overnight oats were delicious as was the yogurt (very tangy) and fresh fruit. Hubby had some buffet items and eggs Benedict which he enjoyed. We would definitely stay here and dine here again!
