Rabin was very efficient and attentive a most delightful waiter, we were very pleased with him. I realize Ten Acres is separate from Pier Hotel but we were surprised that the girl serving in the Bar was very naked at the back also wearing jeans. A very bad advert for the Pier Hotel usually staff are dressed like that in lower class restaurants. The waiters were dressed very smart. We are from Toronto. E. Y.

Based on this most recent visit, that confidence was misplaced. My meal was served on a visibly dirty plate. That is not a minor oversight -- it is a fundamental failure. Cleanliness is the bare minimum in food service, particularly at nearly $30 per entrée. There is no justification for serving food on a dirty dish. I later felt unwell, which only heightened my concern about overall hygiene practices. The food itself did not justify the pricing. The lamb burger was dry and lacked the juiciness one would reasonably expect, even with tzatziki. The fries were low-grade and out of place for a restaurant positioning itself at this price level. Premium pricing demands premium execution. That standard was not met. The revised dining layout also detracts from the experience. The high tables and chairs create an uncomfortable and less welcoming atmosphere. Notably, during our visit, no guests chose to sit at them -- everyone gravitated toward standard seating. That alone speaks volumes. Restoring the previous table configuration would significantly improve comfort and ambiance. The service was equally underwhelming. At this price point, guests should receive attentive, polished, and genuinely welcoming service. Instead, both the waitress and food runners appeared disengaged. When customers are spending this much, attitude and professionalism are not optional -- they are expected. After returning home, I reviewed feedback from the past year and was struck by the consistency of similar complaints. The pattern is clear: standards have declined. This establishment was once very good. It is capable of better. However, until cleanliness, food quality, atmosphere, and service standards are brought back to where they were, it cannot justify its pricing. At this level, "acceptable" is not enough. The standard needs to be significantly higher.

I'm sipping the Earl Grey Creamy tea as I write my review. Gentle Reader, if you follow my reviews,…read moreyou may have noticed a pattern of my London Fog enjoyment along the west coast. My love of them is sincere and lasting. This tea from Janet's Special Teas captures the taste and creaminess of a London Fog. I did add honey for a touch of sweetness ( Janet gifted me two small honey dippers!). This tea is indeed special. I'm sorry I only picked up a 1 oz bag of loose tea--next time I'm there (likely a year from now, alas), I'll buy more. The rose tea is also outstanding and fragrant. I was looking for Rose Congou, a favorite of mine, but Janet wisely pointed me to her rose tea. It's my new favorite (aside from my abiding love for the Earl Grey Creamy tea). I'm excited to try the herbal licorice spice tea for dessert tonight--it smells amazing. As good as the teas are, Janet is the star of this show: warm, funny, thoughtful and knowledgeable, she absolutely knows her products from teas to honeys to beautiful tea ware. Her shop is beautiful, and I'm excited to return for more.

I think you get a small bag of tea with teapot purchases, so that was nice too. The sales woman (Janet?) was delightful and knowledgeable. I will be back! Great find in the cute little burg of Sidney. Fairly extensive selection of handmade pastries,…read morecookies and savory sandwiches. They even sell dog biscuits that are baked in-house. Everything looked tempting so we purchased a lot: a fig tapenade Brie sandwich (wonderful flavours, a little heavy on the bread and light on the cheese); a mango danish (delicate, crisp pastry strewn with baked mango chunks); a vegetarian pizza (cheesy and flavourful); and my favourite, an oatmeal fudge bar (like the one Starbucks used to sell, but with higher-quality ingredients and most importantly, more chocolate!). We also got a salad as a nod to nutrition, which was fresh, contained a surprising amount of bocconcini and came with a tasty vinaigrette - a little overpriced for the portion tho. Service was friendly and prompt. No seating inside, but there are a few benches outside where one can enjoy the treats if the weather's fine--and it was. 4.5

The Fickle Fig Express is a cute little bakery serving up some fabulous pastries, along with friendly service with a smile. Located on the central high street core of Sidney, make this bakery one not to miss. I was lucky they had anything left, getting here at 3pm. Cause you know how it is when it comes to bakeries - the early bird gets the worm. The Cinnamon Bun was very good & the Chocolate Almond Brownie - sensational.
