I hadn't known of the existence let alone title of Fairfeild Park Boathouse and tea Gardens until only a few weeks ago, when it was suggested by a friend. It's super old fashioned and conservative, and probably a genuine insight into the outing and destination of choice in Melbourne going back over a century ago. They're still serving the scones for $10.40, with what amounts to, quite possibly a mountainous dollop of jam and cream. Even me, with my penchant for the extravagant, and usually over-indulgent appetite was defeated by this hedonistic generosity of a serving.
To make matters worse, trying to eat a scones with a huge pile of sugary jam in the prime of wasp season is a very challenging feat indeed. When not occupied by swatting countless wasps away, I was doing my earnest not to get bitten but also finish the scones before they got attacked and completely enveloped by over determined, and some would say eargly excited wasps. I prefer to call them a damm nuisance and pest, but luckily I managed to survive the ordeal of not only getting stung, but eating said wasps, and then talking like the godfather for the next month, whilst my cheeks were swollen more than a good year blimp, having the jowling jaw to prove it.
Anywho, aside from the battle royale against inordinate amount of wasps, the boathouse down in Fairfield remains largely a tourist destinations; largely populated by families, kids and overseas tourists. There's a great long porch veranda to sit upon, and one can look towards the river and see ducks, as well as a magnificent wooden bridge that looks deceptively long and high. When you're done, no doubt groaning from an overdose of fat, sugar and carbs you can make your way up the very steep and long hill back to the car park where you can compete against all the other patrons, in a glorified attempt to be the first one out of the carpark. Ah, entertainment at it's finest! Enjoy. read more
