I came here with a friend for lunch, baby in tow, and got a great little seat by the window. I love both seating (more space for bags!) and the hostess also pointed out a nearby basket of kiddie toys. My baby is still pretty little and prefers licking things so I saved all you future diners' kids from a layer of my child's saliva. You're welcome ;) We had the meatloaf sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich, although many many things on the menu looked amazing. My pulled pork was very tender with a good amount of sauce. I did have to knife and fork it just out of politeness but if I were eating alone I would have just stuffed my face. My friend enjoyed her meatloaf sandwich but found the portion a bit too big for her (good if you're a big eater). We split a milkshake and they brought us an extra cup. The half milkshake was just the right portion size if you're eating a full lunch. Love the hipster diner feel too! read more

Love this place!! Ordered the duck kimchee pancake and it was delicious! There's always a wait at this restaurant but somehow we always manage to get seated quickly. The milkshakes are a must try! They change up the flavors. Salted Caramel banana was super good! They can also split one milkshake into two glasses for easy sharing! read more

Joined a friend here for a weekday lunch. We both had the grilled cheese with tomato soup and it was excellent. There was a good amount of cheese, everything was hot and melty and the onions inside really added to the flavour. Tomato soup was creamy and flavourful. We also split an order of chickpea fritters, which were tasty but not a huge serving. Overall a delicious meal with good service. Bathrooms are gorgeous and clean. I look forward to coming back and trying more of their menu! read more

Been here a few times and I always feel right at home in this cozy retro styled dinner that almost makes you feel that you are in an different era. The staff are always super friendly and accommodating. On this most recent visit we came for a late lunch for a friends birthday and had with us 2 infants and a toddler and the staff had a spot for the stroller and to our surprise a bin full of toys that our friends toddler was ecstatic to play with. The food is always satisfying and the portions are fair. These guys do the whole neighbourhood dinner thing really well. So happy to have them in our hood. This was not my first time eating here and it definitely won't be my last. read more

We visited this restaurant about a week ago. We were all very pleasantly surprised with the creative dishes for lunch. Not the regular dishes which makes this an exciting restaurant. Our party of 4 enjoyed our individual order. I had chic pea burger. There was a duck dish. Great tomato soup. O and the service staff are super . Very helpful and friendly. Also be prepared for a waiting lineup. Pricing , well let's just say average C$20/25 per head. Not bad. value for money. I will go to this restaurant anytime. Enjoy read more

The two of us came on a rainy day and I was surprised at how busy Fable Diner was. I put my name on the list and was informed that the wait would be around 20-25 minutes. Fortunately, we got a table under 10 minutes, phew! The restaurant was nicely decorated and it was retro and modern at the same time. I agree with other reviewers who thought the service was a little inconsistent. I probably waited for about 5 minutes before a server attended the table. Nevertheless, it did get better throughout my time at Fable Diner. I ordered the fabled virgin ($4.75) and the fried chicken benny (with soft poached eggs; $15). The fabled virgin was very interesting. I was initially intrigued because the drink had blueberry juice, pomegranate syrup, and grapefruit juice in it. However, I couldn't taste any of it, and I wasn't sure what to make of it. It wasn't sweet but it wasn't sour either, so my tastebuds were confused. The fried chicken bennies sure looked delicious when it came. I liked how the cheddar and scallions scones added extra flavour to the dish. They were great with the soft poached eggs, especially when the yolk was absorbed into the scones, along with the hollandaise. The potato hash was tasty too. Although the fried chicken were juicy and had a nice kick to them, I thought the pieces were too small. For $15, I expected a little more for my dish. I was very thirsty after brunch, probably from the fried chicken and gravy, as well as the potatoe hash. I downloaded the Glancepay app to pay after the server explained it to us. I thought it was a neat idea as it saved time and that also meant the server didn't have to come back to your table to collect payment. I also got $5.00 off the bill for downloading it for the first time (why not?). I'm not sure if I would return for brunch but I would give their lunch/dinner a try next time. read more

We had waited for our food for 20 mins., turns out the order didn't reach the kitchen. Then we waited for another 20 mins, still the food was not ready. The server told us the food will be ready in 10 mins. So the total time we wait for our two breakfasts was an hour. If we didn't check, they didn't even know the order was lost. read more

Delicious fresh spin on classic brunch foods. My husband had a classic breakfast with eggs, bacon, toast, hashbrowns, and bacon. The hashbrowns had a sour cream sauce on top that was awesome. The bacon was the thickest we've ever seen! I had the Nutella french toast which was amazing! It had a whipped Nutella topping that was sweet with a slight caramelized sour taste. read more

We've been here a few times - for brunch, for lunch, for dinner. Most of my experiences here has been 5-star worthy: the retro-modern environment, high quality food, a good mix of comfort food, breakfast all day, easy to access location. But I recently had a "3-star" experience, environment was still great but the food was so, so salty. We ordered the flatiron steak and the gnocchi, and the first few bites were great (as most overly salty, overly flavourful foods are) but halfway through the meal the saltiness kicked in and we couldn't stop drinking water. The potato's with the steak was so salty, the gravy under the potatoes was so salty and concentrated (like I was having a beef stock cube), the orange sauce with the gnocchi was so salty!! My tongue actually started getting a bit scratchy and sore at the end of the meal. We finished everything though. If this was my first and only experience of Fable Diner, I would probably not come back. If yelp could do 1/2 stars, I would give this 3.5. I know I'll end up back here again eventually but I'm a bit nervous about the saltiness now. read more

Conveniently located on Broadway near Main, this little diner has a lot to offer people who are hungry ... and maybe people who are not hungry, but like people-watching. I will admit that I am a creature of habit. Like Ron Swanson in the TV show Parks and Recreation, I love a good breakfast. This place delivers. Now, some of you may scoff at the idea of the roast duck pancake. It is a single pancake with a bunch of savoury stuff on top of it. However, I have to say that it is one of the best damn things on their menu, and if they ever take it off, I will be incredibly sad. A single pancake is enough, as they load the thing up with generous pieces of duck, kimchi, green onion, and a couple of other things that work incredibly well together. Adding the egg is recommended. As far as non-pancake items go, I also recommend any of their milkshakes. Beautifully presented, delicious and cooling, and some of them even have alcohol, if that's your thing. Never been disappointed once. I am lactose intolerant and I take the lactose pills to enjoy their shakes, because they're worth it. The staff have always consisted of such funny, beautiful, accommodating people. They're part of what makes Fable great. The washrooms have always been pretty damn clean, too. That's helpful. Long story short, Fable is one of my favourite places to eat in East Van. When I lived in East Van and not in Burnaby, I kept trying to bring in new people, so they could see how awesome the place was. I've been very successful, and I hope that Fable continues to be. read more

Having food restrictions is never fun, self inflicted ones to get healthier are even harder. My friend mentioned Fable opened up a diner, more casual but still artistic food, so I agreed I'd have a chance of having my limitations met. Our serve kept telling me to stop apologizing for having to have her find out if this dish, that starter, and the other had sugar in it. She was more than happy to find out, and told me she thought it was a good life change to try and stop eating sugar. I'm at a Fable so of course my meal was good. I don't see why I'd need to tell you that. However this diner went above and beyond the call of delicious food, and made sure my body was happy to have eaten here. Thanks Fable diner, it was a pleasure. read more

I love going to Fable diner for some comfort food. The Mac & cheese is delicious and I usually convince my group that we need a chocolate peanut butter shake or two. I've only been there for dinner - the vibe is chill and loungey yet still laidback like a diner. The prices are reasonable: the two egg breakfast is $8 without sausage or bacon (additional $4 for sausage or bacon) and the Mac & cheese is $12 (can add bacon for $4). A bit of a trek if you don't have a car, but the Canada line train to broadway-city Hall gets you about 6 blocks away and there is a bus from there that could get you closer. Overall highly recommend. I'm a repeat customer for sure (even without a car!) read more

Absolutely amazing food here. Been for brunch and for dinner and never been disappointed. This is a quality restaurant with quality food at affordable prices. The food is absolutely delicious. The service is great. The staff are friendly and fun. I took my mother here on her birthday. It was the afternoon just after lunch time and my mum wanted something to eat from the dinner menu. Even though they weren't serving the dinner menu yet, they accommodated my mothers request because it was her birthday. That's great customer service!! 5/5 Fable Diner. You guys rock!! read more

Don't you fucking DARE charge $18 for a tiny burger and put PROCESSED CHEESE on it. And then serve it with a measly portion of soggy, unseasoned fries. Isn't Fable's shtick "farm-to-table"? Please tell me what farm you got this locally-sourced shitty processed cheese from! I've had better meals at McDonald's than this place. Fable Diner is exactly what you think a diner would be if it was designed by a hipster millennial - a painfully contrived retro outfit serving overpriced, undersized, mediocre comfort food. Oh, and if you're gentrifying a neighbourhood and took over an old smaller diner, bonus points! Be sure to name a burger after them to pay your respects! The service here is a joke. Literally FIVE different people waited our table at various times and somehow it was still impossible to get anyone's attention without having to get up from your seat and find someone directly. Don't bother wasting your money here. Go down the alley to 8th Ave and go to Nice Cafe for good food at a fair price. read more

This place has great modern diner food. It's very main st. Cozy, chill, retro diner vibe on the inside. I dig it.

Don't go here hungry. The portions are small and underwhelming in flavour and nutrition. I ordered the fried chicken and grits with steamed vegetables. The chicken tasted stale, like it was a lesser grade and had been frozen for awhile. The "steamed" vegetables were actually 1/4 cup cold canned beats, five pickle slices (not even whole pickles), and one, very crunchy, warm stick of Italian broccoli. I'd never had grits before. These tasted all right and were 75% of the plate portions. The dish should have been called Grits and Fried Chicken with vegetable garnish. Very unsatisfying fare for the price they charged. read more

Love brunch here! My favourite is the duck pancake, perfect balance of savoury and sweet. Tons of flavour packed into one dish and everything blends so well together. This place has a great modern look but still feels like it has the old diner charm. Highly recommend here for brunch, you will not be disappointed. read more

Visiting from the states, and my friends suggested to try this place out! Service: 3/5 I didn't want to be charged with international fee if we used credit cards so I kindly asked the waitress if I can pay with USD instead of CAD in response to "yeah, but it will be dollar per dollar" [$1.00 USD = $1.24 CAD]: wouldve been nice if it was something near that. Food: 3/5 As a Californian, we tried the Poutine... literal cheese and gravy on top of potatoes. read more

PROS: Lovely interior, caring staff and a well stocked bar with delicious cocktails available on the menu. CONS: Sadly, the food (specifically dinner menu). The fries were totally overlooked and uneatable. The burger patty was exceptionally small and definitely not worth the $. Such a pity because I dined here before 6 weeks ago and everything was perfect! Not sure what's happened since but it all in all, my experience was underwhelming and overrated. Also never written a bad review before in all my time on Yelp... sorry FD!!! read more

All the food we ordered were very tasty. From the perfect combo of smoked salmon, avocado, arugula, & poached eggs in west coast toast, to the spicy fried chicken bennies that my husband ordered where the chicken was so tender and well marinated that you can taste the flavours, to the kids breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, potato rosti and toast that we exchanged for a pancake. It was the best pancake I have tasted that my 10-month old baby finished it. It was simple with the perfect sweetness. The west coast toast was mouth watering that I am already craving for it after we left the restaurant. The choco peanut butter with pretzels milkshake was the perfect way to end the brunch. Our server was very pleasant and accommodating. They didn't charge for the pancake when we asked to substitute it for the toast. The servers were friendly and made sure my husband's coffee and our glasses of water were refilled on time although it was a busy Sunday morning. Great service and food. Kudos to the staff behind and in front of counter. read more

When I think of a diner, I think grungy greasy spoon or too bright Denny's after a night out. Fable Diner doesn't fall into either of these categories and that is a very good thing. A bright, modern space with a cool, laid back vibe. Our group sought out this place after discovering the Le Burger competition was happening during our time in Canada. Fable diner was featuring their entry, a burger topped with an egg and foie gras. Our table ordered 3 of these and all agreed it. was. amazing. So full of flavor, so messy, so worth it. New favorite restaurant, unfortunately I live a 5hr flight away. After our first visit, we actually bailed on another breakfast place we wanted to try, because we HAD to come back! The peanut butter bacon oats are my new favorite food - loads of peanut butter, chopped salty bacon, just a few chopped sweet apple bits and perfectly cooked steel cut oats! Also, the best scrambled eggs of my life! The housemade jam was the perfect accompaniment to our toast. Such a delight! We also enjoyed the French toast and fried chicken eggs benny!! Good friendly service from our gentlemen server but we waited 30-40 minutes for 2 burgers.. Main St. and Kimchi burger and it wasn't worth the wait. Main st burger tasted similar to an A&W burger. A&W burgers are tasty but was hoping it would be more elevated here. Their fries taste similar as well. Burger was dry as it comes without tomatoes and was charged for that. An apology/acknowledgment for the delay or no charge tomatoes would have been appreciated as it felt like we were the only ones aware that the wait time was awfully long. read more

Came here for brunch once, it's a beautifully designed retro themed diner with modern touches - and huge windows facing the street for tons of natural light. Felt very warm & welcoming coming in. I can't even remember what I ordered, haha - we came in a large group and shared everything. All the dishes were so good and had tons of freshness and flavour. Some standouts include their pancakes and bennies. Great place to take your kids, and tons of varieties of dishes to choose for a fun and enjoyable brunch. Have eaten here twice after realizing how close it is to my new place! Once for lunch and once for dinner. Have tried the fried chicken leg, the zucchini salad, milkshakes, smoked mushrooms, and Mac & cheese. Would definitely come back for the mushrooms!!! They had been making them during the end of my lunch visit, and the smell and sight of the smoke curling in the alley and smell through the dining room piqued my interest. I recommend the milkshakes, Mac & cheese, and mushrooms. My friend liked her chicken leg but when I ordered it for dinner, it was not to my liking - it is confit cooked, and made from free range chicken. Was not used to the texture and pink color. Sorry! But would return for a great meal with my friends, or solo. read more

Sadly we had really bad experience, which was a bummer because the food was so good! Staff was super friendly when we came in. But, after they took our order, it went downhill. Either they forgot to make our order or they sent it to the wrong table. So, we waited 40 mins after ordering for our food for it to come. But, instead of just apologizing, they decided to avoid the situation by completely ignoring us. Our food finally came, (and is was so good, those grits!!) and then they never spoke another word to us again. The server completely avoided our table, never asked how the food was or if we needed anything. Never even asked if we wanted our bills, we paid with Glancepay so we could leave. The staff doted on tables surrounding us, but actually wouldn't even look at us. Really horrible. I guess we are the wrong kind of people? read more

This was a great brunch! First visit here and the first thing that struck me was how bright and welcoming the space is - it's big but still feels cozy. I had the truckers breakfast with scrambled eggs, thick-cut bacon, potatoes, a pancake, and a piece of toast. I found the eggs too salty but everything else was great. Especially loved the pancake which was a little crispy - tasted like maybe there was a bit of cornmeal in it? - super delicious. The bacon was also good, have never had bacon like that before. Coffee was very good and came with unlimited refills. Service was very friendly, helpful, and reasonably fast for a busy Sunday morning. I can't wait to come back here! read more

I love their ambiance, and the waiters are always super on top of their game. I go here frequently, but mainly because it is close to my house - the price for their veggie eggs Benedict is definitely too high - bad, watery guacamole (instead of avocado) and ice cold sauce hollandaise make it one of my least favourite bennies in town. read more

Ate here a while ago. Was decent, if not like every other gentrified dining experience in vancouver. It has the pretence of being a classic diner with the trappings of virtually every contemporary eatery in the city. There's a homage in the menu to the diner which preceded it (Reno's) which was a greasy, morning hangover kinda place to eat where I had a weird experience with the previous owner and never returned after. However it did have character, which this place essentially lacks. I love diners and breakfast and was excited to see what would replace Reno's and maybe find for myself a new place to dine in the morning before going into work nearby and went in excited to see the new breakfast menu. Of which, there's really only one traditional plate of breakfast and it had a single slice of bacon and an arrangement of food including small fancy bread slices that left me still hungry at the end of my meal. Considering the rest of the menu doesn't appeal to me, I can't say much of it nor if I will return in the future. However, with that said, staff were pretty friendly and a dude came over to engage and chat with me, although I just wanted to spend time alone and read the news on my phone. I appreciate the gesture though, no one really does that in Vancouver. So kudos, for that I rate it a 2 read more

Went for lunch and had a burger. OMG... love the beef and the way it was cooked! This was the first gluten free bun that I actually liked! The servers were genuine and treated me and my child with patience and kindness. I loved this place and will definitely be back! Maybe they mixed up the buns but it was so sad because now I can't trust them to actually be gluten friendly. read more

PEOPLE are giving it grades for the interior .... with descriptions like 'hip diner vibe' -'mid century retro' etc. some went on ad nauseam - writing trite little novella's ... as an hommage to themselves. The Missing Ingredient .... was an honest appraisal of the food. Yes it was of decent quality, the presentation was clever .... BuT the portions are microscope while the prices are high. So, Yes = thats a great business model for the owners ..... not a surprise .... ...... but value for money NOT .... eg. the '' truckers breakfast '' is two eggs, little square of potato (mushy inside) + small bacon or sausage portion - - - truckers kill for smaller affronts. *** the Steak & eggs '' same mushy centered potato, one slice of toast cut in two ......... & && = x5 teaspoon sized pieces of meat..... $15.00 + coffee+ service etc. If you find this hip ... do join the cue on a weekend .... during the week the local office workers are presumably not fooled. * ps if you find this hip - you are not a hipster and have no idea what the words mean. read more

Went during week 3 of their soft launch. Two of us split the burger with onion rings and the beet salad. The burger was pretty good, the onion rings were great and the salad was tasty but quiet small. The service was pretty bad--our server didn't know what beers they had and it was empty and it was hard to place a dessert order and then the wrong one came. A different server was super condescending to an older man with a walker who wanted to have a coffee. Her tone was really unwelcoming. She spoke to him loud and slow. I imagine it's a bit tricky working at a fancy diner that used to be a dive, but it's not necessary to treat people like that. I hope they figure out the neighbourhood and the service because the food is good. read more

Food, juicy, that pulled pork sandwich was definitely juicy. Milkshakes creamy. Even nice and creamy. We ordered half the menu. It tickled my tastebuds. Comfort food. Mac was goooood.
