CITYROW - Plainview - "Masked up and ready to row! Let's crush some meters "

    CITYROW - Plainview

CITYROW is one of the most welcoming workout environments I've been in. Owners introduce…read morethemselves, help you get setup and show you where all the goodies are. Fellow rowers have also been friendly and motivating without the air of pretentiousness you'll occasionally find at boutique classes... Walking in you'll notice the studio is cleaner than Raffi album, with ample fresh air flowing through and sanitizers located all over. COVID be damned, workouts are happening in this space. Lockers are fairly easy to figure out and will hold your purse, coats, plans for world domination, etc but are not completely necessary to use. The rowing machines are spaced out well so a small workout bag is not too obtrusive in your space. Instructor Kat London was extremely sweet, personable and helpful. She checked up on all the newbies and motivated us without being pushy or cliche. She demonstrated all exercises so we could follow along. You're rowing quite a bit during the 50 min class, but you're also getting a well rounded workout with circuit training. Be prepared -- dead lifts, squats, planks or presses with weights are not out of the question. Additionally, rowing itself is not terribly difficult, however it takes practice to get your form perfect and not rely on your shoulders and lower back to take the brunt of the work. CITYROW is easy to locate in Plainview's most bougie shopping centers, with ample parking among the G-wagons and Tesla's. If you time the class right, you won't have to complete with the Starbucks morning rush crowd. The studio is a little out of the way for me, else I'd probably be re-enacting the Price Eric & Ariel rowing scene in a my head a bit more (after lunking around 8 pound weights of course!)

Stopped by for a session and was such a good experience. The place is located in a good plaza with…read moreample parking. From the checking in to coats and lockers the place was very clean. They do have 2 restrooms I believe and a corner area to place your coats. The class itself consists of circuit training and rowing (obv), about an hour long. The instructor, Maria Costellos, was super cool and matched the energy for someone new like me and some of the regulars. It was a challenge I have to say but well worth its value. I consider myself fairly active and really thought I'd breeze through rowing but honestly got my butt handed to me lol. All machines are distanced and kept in ways to not interfere with others which is good. For those considering an alternative workout to say a soulcycle or something, this would be a solid choice. They only opened recently but I can imagine within the year this place to get pretty packed. Well worth it and the experience with the team there was pleasant, definitely recommended to stop by as they offer the first class free.

It can get a bit crowded at certain times of the day and since its a really small gym youll be waiting a bit to use your preferred machine. The staff are all well mannered people and have never given any issues. HOWEVER........ The one major drawback to this place is that it almost never has any running hot water. Every month seems to be an issue (and im not exaggerating). Im not sure if they are having trouble paying the bills here or if someone is turning the hot water valve off for days at a time but it is a constant issue. Me personally I work out before i head straight to work so a shower is needed after a hard hour or two sweating bullets. Just this morning I walked to the locker room after working out and one of the guys who frequents this place said to me "hey the water is luke warm today" and this is the running gag with everyone here, being delighted just for luke warm shower water. Litterally everyone in the locker complains about it every month. Anywho I step in the shower and put it on max heat but instead was drenched in water from antarctica. I did find some comic relief in it though, as others who stepped in there showers looking forward to the "luke warm" rumor but were disappointed, and then it became a symphony of complaints and anguish LOL. Theres something very funny about grown men just in agony about not having hot water. Men of all ages young and old getting together in a gym locker room and throwing a fit. I was told that blink was bought out and now owned by a company called PURE FITNESS. Well pure fitness, how about some pure hot water? Seriously though, the only reason i still come here is because its literally right by my job and also because its been so hot that the below zero water isnt so bad once you step outside in that 90 plus degree heat. Yet winter will be upon us soon and i dont know if i can survive bathing in arctic water without turning into a chocolate freezy pop. The one thing I do appreciate is that when you walk in they now have a sign that stands by the desk letting you know that theres no hot water. The thing is the sign is standing for weeks at a time. Seriously, in june there was no hot water for almost 3 straight weeks. I mean i cant understand whats going on at this place. We had hot water all last week and then i walk in this morning and its cold again. I just realized that it is the end of the month and I know now that liberty utilities doesnt play about that money.....

The gym isn't super big, but it wasn't massively overcrowded either so I didn't have to wait for any machine at all. All of the machines were in working order so I got to use what I wanted to use, the weight racks were actually well put together and not scattered all over the place...I'm guessing since this is a Long Island area, people have better manners. I'm giving this place a 5 and it's a generous one. Staff seemed pretty nonexistent and I had to get their attention to greet them, but I'll let it slide because they do take care of the gym or at least make sure the other gym goers not mess it up. It was a good day here.

Work out, leave feeling like this is your new happy place! Long version - Please continue reading: First of all, this is my second time trying CrossFit (2018) after being really inspired by one of my girlfriend's facebook story/posts. She's amazing!!! I stayed away from CrossFit because I didn't think it was a good match for me. I decided to give it another shot after speaking to her. Cleanliness: I'm a clean freak. I'm neurotic. I know, I'm crazy but hey! It's the pandemic. This gym is super clean and their bathroom is super clean (yes, I checked and I approve of how clean it is). There are a few lockers in there which I haven't used. I just put my stuff against the wall and wait for the fun class to begin. After the equipments are used, each members wipe it down with Saniwipes (yes, I checked this as well). All the barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, jump rope, rowing machine, bike, etc EVERYTHING is cleaned after use! I love it! Staff: I've only took classes lead by these Coaches: James, Mike, Jesse. This review is based off of them. I always ask questions. Sometimes, questions bother people and they get annoyed. These three coaches are amazing! They're super friendly and was answering all of the questions that I have. They're super friendly and very motivating. Any injuries you may have, please speak to them! They were able to modify certain workouts for me and really paid attention to my form (along with the others). You could see the passion in them when they speak about the workouts. They explain every workout, movement, and form. They go over this before it starts. Class: You will sweat. Your hearts going to pound. HARD! Your heart's going to feel like it's about to pop out of your mouth. Okay, okay..That's IF you're unhealthy like me and it's been years since you've worked out. Everyone works out really hard and are super motivational! You will be sore for the next 3 days! After 3 classes, I felt healthier, had more stamina, was able to shovel snow without a problem (no, really...). I seriously had WAYYYYY more energy than expected and of course, I was in good spirits! Exercise really makes a difference in your mood and I will proudly say Peak180 is now my new happy place! Oh! I need to mention... they have whiteboards! So if you have a lot on your mind like me, grab one. Write down what you need to do. It'll make your life easier when your brain decides to sleep as you tear your muscle fibers. Members: A bunch of amazing people! They're welcoming, friendly, and a bunch of beasts! Watching them work out as I did really kept me going. I didn't want to give up even though my body felt like jello. Parking: There's PLENTY of parking in the back. Work out, grab some coffee at Mongo's afterwards (if they're still open) Location: Enter the lot, drive all the way to the back, make a left and you'll see this wonderful place! For those who have stuck around til the end to read my review, thank you! Peak180 has gained a new loyal member. Thanks, everyone! I'm excited and will be updating this review as time goes by. Just do it. Just stop by and take a class. DO NOT FORGET THAT WATER!!! Before, during, and after so your muscles will thank you.
