This used to be my home shop when I lived in Portland, I live in Anchorage now, but I still sometimes pick up some yeast from them when I'm in town. I recently tried ordering some thiolized yeasts from Omega online, and I ran into some difficulties with the shipping, I had a very detailed and polite. Drove all the way up here after work to get some co2. Website hours say they close at 6:30, got here at 6:19 and they are closed. Hours posted on door say they are open until 6:30. I have been brewing off and on since 1989 and have shopped at Homebrew stores across the country. This place is the absolute best homebrew shop I have ever been in. The selection of malt, adjunct, and specialty grains is phenomenal, they have so many hops from pellets, to fresh, even rhizomes for growing your own, huge assortment of yeast strains, etc. Their tap department is vast if you want to keg your brew, and they seem to have a great stock of rental equipment and will even refill your carbon dioxide canisters. Bulk grain prices are so competitive versus going to the smaller shops and getting that mark-up to buy a grain bill for a single batch. Staff was very knowledgeable and helpful to boot. Definitely worth the drive in to Portland when I need to stock up. read more

One of my favorite stores, hands down, Portland! The vibe in here is very creative and laid-back. The employees are super helpful and kind and your fingers start itching at wanting to ferment everything! Especially when you look at all the bins of hops and barley and grains etc. This is a great place to buy beer making supplies, kits, bottles, caps and corks, etc. I took a winemaking class here which was pretty cool. There are also books on different recipes and ways of making anything that you want to make. You can also buy grapes in the fall to make your own wine and you can also rent out the cider press to press your own apples to make your cider. Great selection of yeast and spices. I found myself needing a simple CO2 tank refill and I'll be near downtown today. Ofcourse, I thought, I'll go to Steinbart! And then I remembered. No way am I subjecting myself to THAT AGAIN. I'm a woman. Each time I have gone in (+10x in the last 5 years) the sales people (ALL WHITE MEN) ignore me, man-splain to me, use a tone of voice and body language that I am dumb and not worthy of their time (let alone business!). This is the most comprehensive brew supply store I've ever been to. The staff are so knowledgeable and willing to help with tips abs advice. Great selection of hops, yeast, equipment, etc. you can also rent equipment like presses and grinders instead of throwing down for your own. It doesn't get much better than Steinbart's for homebrewing supplies. The place has pretty much anything you can think of, the prices are decent, things are easy to find, and the guys are generally helpful. The grains are all nicely labeled, and weighing and crushing is easy. It can be a little overwhelming the first couple of times, but I've learned to prefer doing my own to having somebody else do it for me. Their yeast & hops selection is also worth mentioning. Gotta be the best variety of any brew shop I've visited. There's even a discount if you have an AHA card. Nothing wrong with saving a few dollars, right? read more

Such a great place! I went in to get some air locks and was hoping to get a lid for my gallon jar that had a hole for the air lock. I asked a staff member if they had them and he said "no, but I can make you one!" So he took the plastic lids they stock, drilled a hole in it, and put a rubber loop in it so it would be airtight. All in like 5 minutes! I got 2 custom lids and 2 air locks for for less than $5. Excellent customer service. They really went above and beyond. They also have a really impressive selection of basically anything you could possibly need for fermenting, and great prices! I will definitely be back. read more

From other reviews it looks like I just caught an employee on a bad (really bad?) day. I came in looking for a 1/2" cork or stopper. I had called ahead and was assured they had an assortment. When I arrived I asked a young woman behind the counter about corks, and mentioned I had called. She called into the back, maybe to check with another employee and I asked her where the corks were, and she pointed them out. I went over and started looking around for what I needed when the employee from the back appeared with a tape measure, and said, "Here's a tape measure. Figure it out." It was pretty aggressive sounding. I had already brought a tape measure so I thanked him and indicated my tape measure. They didn't have a cork small enough for my needs, but they had a rubber stopper. I grabbed one and got in line behind a couple being waited on by the friendly young woman, grateful I wouldn't have to "figure it out" with senior Bernie-Bro-Brewmeister. However, after about a minute, the guy from before came out of the his hole in the back and called me forward to the other register. I smiled and plopped down the stopper and a $1 bill, and was greeted with a blank stare. I stared at him back. At this point I was a little annoyed and wondering what I had done to deserve this guy's ire. After what seemed like an eternity, he asked, "Do you need a receipt?". I replied, "No, just my change." He actually and to ask me how much the stopper was. I really wanted to tell him to figure it out, but refrained. I got my change and headed to the door. When I got to the door I turned to get one more look at this guy, and he was just glaring at me. This looks like a great store, but they need to keep this guy in the back. read more

I'm going to write two mini-reviews here, one for people thinking of getting into homebrewing and another for seasoned veterans. I promise, this is a great shop for both. I'M THINKING OF GETTING INTO HOMEBREW: Come here immediately. The Steinbart's staff is incredibly knowledgeable and will help get you started on the right foot. Whether you want to try your hand at making beer, cider, mead, wine, or kombucha, these guys have an appropriate starter kit in your price range. Just go straight to the counter and tell any employee what you're interested in and they'll take care of you. I'M ALREADY AN AWESOME HOMEBREWER: You'll be in heaven. For the beer brewers, you've got hops galore, a huge selection of domestic and imported malts, and dry and liquid yeasts from every major manufacturer. For the mead makers, there's a great selection of local honey sourced from different crops. Every fall, you can buy wine grapes and fresh hops, as well as rent fruit crushers or cider presses. Generally, the only reason I would buy homebrew supplies from Steinbart's is if they have something I need, and no one else in the Portland Metropolitan area does. While Steinbart's does have a great selection of supplies and ingredients, the general vibe from the staff is that they are doing you a favor by sharing their voluminous wealth of information on anything fermented. The impression I get is that they think I should be overtly appreciative for their assistance, as opposed to them being appreciative for my business. read more

I'm a homebrewing newb but my first batch of brew (an IIPA) turned out AWESOME, even if I do say so myself. I needed a few additional pieces of equipment and supplies to produce brew #2 (a porter) and Steinbart's is the closest homebrew shop to home. The store is appropriately stocked with just about anything you'd want or need to set up your homebrewing operation. The staff was sufficiently helpful. I love how crowded the place was on a Friday afternoon. Clearly lots of other Portlandians will be whipping up batches of delicious beer this weekend. Steinbart's won't replace my favorite homebrewing store, but it's convenient location will bring me in for supplies when I don't feel like driving all the way out to Hillsboro. read more

This store has everything you need from start to finish. The staff is very knowledgeable, they hold home brewing classes, and they have printed recipes (next to the registers). If you're just starting and need some guidance, just grab a recipe and go shopping. If they aren't busy someone would be more than happy to walk around the store with you and help you grab everything you need and even answer your questions. I went in about a year ago to buy my husband a home brew kit as a surprise anniversary gift (he loved it by the way). F.H. Brewing homemade beer is beyond me, but making homemade soda sounded like something do-able. F.H. Steinbart Company is one of the only places to turn to for brewing supplies (for beer and soda!). In fact, it is one of the oldest beer and wine supply houses in the country. They have all the materials you need to go from start to finish in homebrewing--bottles galore, caps, sealers, yeast, flavors, instructions, books. Throw in their seasonal wine and beer making classes, and you'll be ready to go. The top complaint about F.H. Stenbart is their uber-limited (yes, I just used uber) hours, especially on the weekends. But I figured out why: the staff has gotta have some time off to homebrew their own concoctions, yo! If you manage to patronize this business during their limited business hours, you'll be in for a treat. They are knowledgeable and super laid-back. Hubby and I stopped by in search of a larger stainless steel stockpot, and lo and behold--they had one available for $40 off due to shipping damages (i.e., a tiny, tiny dent on the side, and the rubber valve cover slightly split). They have free recipes for anyone to pick up and use, and the staff is super-super nice. If only they can get some non-enthusiasts to man the shop Saturday afternoons, but then that would defeat the purpose of knowledgeable customer service, wouldn't it? Oh--and better to park on the street on 12th or nearby because their parking lot is of the itty-bitty, door-ding variety. Cheers! read more

Went in today to check out their bottle collection for my Kombucha brewing and holy cow these guys have everything and then some! One guy was really helpful in helping me decide which ones would be best for how I brew and super friendly! Very reasonable prices too! Try ordering anything glass online and you will pay an arm and a leg in shipping plus this keeps the business local! :) (I had went somewhere in Beaverton which I shall not say, but because I'm a female I felt totally ignored and the Beaverton place had a "bro" vibe to it (ick), I will definitely continue my business with FH Steinbart in the future and refer anyone I know to that store who wants to brew as well read more

This place is easily the best I have found for homebrew supply for the serious home brewer. They have a huge selection of malts, yeasts, and hops, and adjuncts. Lots of equipment too, I have bought almost everything I use to brew here. The staff is very knowledgeable and happy to talk about their experiences with different beers, yeasts, hops, and experimental batches. One guy acts a bit aloof some days, but is still happy to help any time I have questions. They are almost always busy, but have also gone to measure out products from newly-arrived stock that hadn't been put on the shelves yet. I'm never in a hurry when I shop there, and I appreciate the laid-back attitude from the employees, but I could see if someone was in a rush or pushy they might think the employees were inattentive or unhelpful. Just be patient and you will get great service, I promise. I only have two complaints, one of course being the short hours. I work a weird schedule so the short weekday hours are not too much of a problem, but they still should be open till 7 and all day on weekends. I know they could find people to do it. Secondly, they are frequently out of at least one or two malts and hops, and only seem to have a few of each yeast on hand (though they do have a huuuge selection and descriptions of the flavors they create). It often seems to be they are out of the malts I want to buy, so I either need to wait, substitute, or find another homebrew shop that has what I want. I know it is hard to know what people will buy but they have a huge building, they must have enough storage to keep extra bags of malts. I don't know if this would be the place I would recommend to beginners who just want to throw something together and have it come out great. That's not really how brewing works, anyways. This is more of a shop for people who know a bit about brewing already and don't mind working a little for their craft. I got my self set up here, but I knew exactly what I was doing before I went shopping, so I knew what to get and what to do with it. I would definitely recommend research before investing in homebrew supplies, but then come here and ask questions, tell them what your setup is and what you will be brewing, grab a few of their free recipes, and see if they have any pointers. I've been brewing very frequently for over a year with great success, and Steinbart's is definitely my shop of choice! read more

I took a wine class here over the summer, and it was great. They really know what they're talking about. We even got to sample wine basically the whole class. I finally went in over the weekend to pick up a starter and wine kit. They were helpful, and even helped me take it to my car. I couldn't believe how packed the place was (allow extra time on Saturday). The only thing I was disappointed in, when I get home I didn't have everything that was supposed to be in the starter kit. It was frustrating because the box was opened, and I noticed when I got home. The only other thing is they do have limited hours, but of course they have to get their brewing in too. Interesting nicely sized place not too far from a bunch of Portland's best taps. I'm no homebrewer but this is clearly the place to go get the equipment to make your homespun beers and wines. Even at 9AM on a Saturday it was busy. But what would you expect from a city so into beer like Portland is? They offer free sessions on how to properly brew beer along with free samples of their stuff. Ah, that's why I'm here! I don't want to brew it...just drink it! Actually the wheat and maibock beer were full-bodied but only OK taste wise. One cool thing about the place is they offer back issues of Norrthwest Palate magazine free for the taking. Not knowing much about the PNW, I took one of every copy they had to learn. Nice touch. read more

I read that this company had poor customer service, so I was hesitant. But I knew exactly what I wanted so I wasn't too worried. All I can say is WOW! Every employee was helpful and very willing to answer my questions! I went to buy bottles (which I got) but ended up asking all sorts of questions and got all sorts of good advice! I wish I could give F.H. Steinbart a better rating. I do respect them and their obvious love of homebrewing beer. Here's my problem though: A month or so ago, they had 3 special beer-making kits for sale, advertised as a "Father's Day special." They were portrayed as being of 3 levels- beginner, intermediate, and advanced. These purported to contain everything one would need to brew their own beer. Never having brewed beer before, I naturally got the beginner kit. It seemed a little steep at $75 but it did contain a lot of the equipment and ingredients. Anyway, after reading more about the beer brewing process in various books on the topic, I learned that the kit I had purchased was basically the lowest-level of brewing kit one can buy (the kind where you add a bunch of corn sugar to the malt extract before fermenting), and recommended as something to avoid by all 3 books I had gotten on the subject. Moreover, the pre-hopped malt extract was even expired! Even despite all of this, I might have been okay with it if it hadn't been $75. The equivalent quality kits one can often find at large department stores typically run anywhere from $30-50, rarely more. And finally, I was surprised in general by the fact that such a well-known, well-respected home-brew shop would even offer such an inferior product. So my experience with them was a little disappointing and I wish I had read more about brewing beer before I entrusted them with my money. I later learned that I could have probably bought everything I needed for under $75 and made a better quality beer. All that said, the staff was very friendly, and it looked like they had a good stock of everything one could need to brew their own beer. Still, the aforementioned issue, plus the fact that they aren't that close to me anymore means that I'll probably be frequenting Homebrew Exchange more often. read more

I ordered from FH Steinbart because the seemed to be the only company that sells the correct rice for sake. The rice arrived 6 days after I ordered (well within the 5-7 days I would have expected). So, as far as pricing, ease of ordering, and shipping goes, this was a great order and I will definitely order from them again when I can't source ingredients locally. The reason I am only giving them four starts instead of five is because of a lack of communication. After placing the order, I received an automated email confirmation but it didn't contain any information about shipping method, timeline, etc. After 5 days of hearing nothing, I sent an email to them (to the address they asked to have emails sent) and still heard nothing. Fortunately then day the product arrived but, as a new customer, the lack of communication about the shipping was caused some worrying. But now I know that they don't provide shipping information. That should change but, again, they have the product, it was priced right, arrived without any problems, was easy to order... I'll be a returning customer. read more

Fantastic selection of grains, hops, yeasts, and brewing supplies and accessories. Some of the supplies seems a bit pricey, but the grains are well-priced (though I honestly don't have much of a basis for comparison). It usually costs me about 30 bucks for the supplies for a 5-gal batch of beer (hops, yeast, grains, and extract), plus or minus depending on the recipe, and more if I need extra grain bags or other stuff. They seem to have everything a person needs, amateur or seasoned. The only real downside I've encountered is a couple times the employees got a bit defensive about their products or selection. They are helpful, knowledgeable, and nice, but I feel like I am being offensive if I ask about a product they are temporarily out of or something like that. No real complaints tho. I go here for all my brewing needs and I am never disappointed! Also, using the mills for the grains is really fun. I also with they had a second scale in the grain room because it can be a pain if more than one person is grain shopping at a time. But patience is a virtue :) read more

This shop has become a waste of time. I hadn't been by in a while and stopped in to refill a CO2 bottle. After being ignored by the first two employees even after asking for help I was finally directed to a third in the back. He was on the phone with another customer so I sat my tank down and began to browse. After 10 minutes he was off of the phone and I asked for a refill. He wouldn't take my word that the tank had been hydro tested even after I had shown him the stamp on the tank from the last test. He finally agreed to fill it after another employee checked the stamp again at which time they said they were out of CO2 and to come back in another day or two. Not going to happen. These guys need to go back and remember where they came from and learn some customer service skills. read more

I have been home brewing for about eight years now so I have been to few shops in my time. These guys are great and are always willing to help. Even though I have experience I wanted to talk to someone face to face to feel better about making a significant investment in brewing equipment. I tried two other brew shops before coming back here. I should have just come here in the first place and I would have saved myself some wasted time. I talked to Nick for sometime trying to figure out exactly what I wanted. Of the two brew stores I've been to in PDX, this place definitely has the best prices. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. But the best part is the sheer variety Steinbart's has. Almost any beer recipe you come in with, they have the speciality name-brand stuff.
