Came across this place on my walk- great place to swing by to relax and have a cigar. Plenty of choices and just a great place to hang out.

Pipes and more Pipes... definitely well stocked.

Bought some pipe tobacco and lighter, great service. Good selection although at bit of a premium compared to online. I will be returning.

I always want to like it more than I do. I always want to come in, look at the lovely downtown pub…read more(I don't bother with 21st Street), and say "you know what, it's about on par with anything I've seen in Boston, Hoboken, New York, Philly, Baltimore, or Chicago." I want to say it's on par with the better Northwest offerings like the Irish Heather in Vancouver, The Irish Times in Victoria, or Murphy's in Seattle. But I can't. Because every time I'm here I'm just reminded of all the things it isn't. The menu looks somewhat right on paper, but it's little things like the spice and bake on the sausage rolls, the fact that they won't give you curry and chips without ordering the whole chicken entree ordeal, the somewhat dry and mealy burger. Then there are the drinks: There's a Guinness on, but the Magners is in the bottle. And then there's the whole brewpub element that was introduced a few years ago that baffles me. There are so many breweries in town, and so many quality Irish breweries, that I have no idea why you'd brew a middling beer lineup of your own AND make an Irish stout and red, of all things. But the most disappointing part of The Kells is that it's all the worst parts of the pubs in cities I just mentioned without containing any of their finer points. Stripped of history, taplist, menu, and other comforts, it's just a place where suburbanites come into the city, get loud for a few hours, pay their few quid, and leave without doing much else in the area. Compared to the Leaky Roof, T.C. O'Leary's or the city's English pubs like the Rose and Thistle or Moon and Sixpence, The Kells seems detatched and at arm's length from anything. that might resemble a community. I've heard they've done (double-decker English) buses to Timbers and Thorns matches, and I hear they're basically propping up the city's St. Patrick's Day festivities, but there's something artificial to it. It's a shame. I know the founders came from Belfast and I know the family is still very much involved, but although the staff is always pleasant when I come in, there's very little about the place that makes me want to return. It doesn't repel me, but a pub should draw me in more than this one does.

From fish and chips to sausage rolls to Irish stew, it's a rustic Irish Pub that does itself proud every day. Speaking of the fish and chips: They are to die for. The batter is crisp, and the fish is light and tender. The tartar sauce is not cloyingly sweet, and compliments the fish nicely. The fries are delicious as well, and they stay crisp through the meal. in the past, I have had the Reuben, the Sausage roll, and the Irish Stew among others. I recommend them all. Stop by, you will enjoy the rustic atmosphere and the excellent service. Be sure to ask them why there are dollar on the ceiling.

The ambience is low lighting, lounge, playing Amy Winehouse. Also they have absinthe if you're in to that! Our server was really kind and was able to give great recommendations. The room drops you straight into a version of 1950s America that's been preserved just enough to feel nostalgic without feeling like a museum. Low lighting, wood everywhere, cocktails that feel like they belong in a glass with a heavy base and a quiet sense of purpose. It works, and it works for just about anyone. The drinks are excellent, and the service is generally solid. That said, this is a hotel bar, and it's often staffed by a single bartender, so your experience can vary depending on who's behind the stick that night. I've had great visits here -- the kind where everything flows -- and I've had nights that were just okay. Nothing bad, just inconsistent in a way that comes with the territory. And that's really the crux of it. At the end of the day, this is a hotel bar. Which means drinks come with a premium -- not outrageous, but noticeable. You're paying a bit extra for the setting, for the history, for the fact that it's there when you need it. And while the cocktails are well-made, Portland has no shortage of places doing equally good, if not better, work for the same price or maybe a dollar more. Timing matters here. Weekdays are ideal -- when the room feels like it's yours, when you can actually settle into it. Weekends are a different story. Travelers roll in, rightfully ready to unwind, and suddenly you're competing for space, for attention, for a seat at the bar. So why go? Because when it hits, it really hits. It's a place to lean into the mood a little. Order something off their house cocktail list -- they clearly put thought into it -- and let yourself sink into that old-school rhythm where day drinking feels less like a vice and more like a quiet ritual. It's not perfect. It's not the best value in the city. But it is one of the more distinct experiences you can have -- and sometimes, that's enough.

It's still in its construction phase, but there's something enticing about watching a place come into its own. Stepping through the door drops you right into the humidor--a warm, fragrant embrace. We lingered there for a few minutes before anyone appeared, and just when I wondered if we'd slipped in unnoticed, a speakeasy-style door swung open. I have to admit... the mystery of that was a little thrilling. The host greeted us with easy charm, talked cigars with my husband before inviting us to explore the lounge upstairs. The room had rows of deep chairs, TVs playing and gentlemen chatting. BYOB is always a plus--it's nice to have something smooth to sip while he enjoys his cigar. They were having an event that evening, pizza waiting outside the door. Boxes open and the pizza was cold. Unfortunately not appetizing, but that's not why you come to a cigar bar. My reason for giving three stars is the winter ventilation. With the windows closed, the smoke lingers a bit too intimately. I love joining my husband at cigar lounges, but I prefer not to walk out wearing the scent like a second skin. Still, there's something intriguing about this place--the potential. I'm curious to see how it all comes together.

Parking was difficult as it was all street parking and we were unable to find any spots that felt safe within a few blocks so we parked in a parking garage and walked a few blocks. The bar is cute and tiny with energetic music playing and friendly bartenders. It is a bit hard to carry a conversation here so you really have to be in close quarters with the other person. The drink menu has many awesome rum drink choices and they do have a 4-7 pm weekday happy hour. Drink prices are on par with other bars that serve cocktails and on average about $15. They have food and snacks, which I did not get but looked like a decent option. They also have a small outside seating area. It was a great vibe and I notice a wide age group there. I asked the bartender how long they've been around and they said 15 years. I can't believe I haven't been here before. That do charge a 3% credit card fee so cash is king. I would definitely like to come back and try some of their other rum drinks. It does feel like they might be a little too heavy handed in the ice but the drinks are delicious and you can taste the rum in a good way.
