Spare Time Lanes is this cute little bowling alley near Bluffton that was part bowling, part…read morerestaurant and bar. It was fun to walk in and see all the taps of alcohols they've had over the years dangling from the ceiling. Not a drinker so I can't say much about the bar but if you are, I think you could definitely get your fix here. The food was quite decent. Lots of fried fare but it came out hot and crispy. What more do you want from fried food? Highly recommend the jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese and the pepper jack cheese bites. And a bowling alley's ranch has no business being this good. It was delicious. I did try a piece of pie on the way out (Oreo) and unfortunately didn't like it at all. It was quite bland and mushy and I did throw it out. Bummed about that and would be curious about the other flavors. The lanes left something to be desired according to my bowling league family members. The floors at this particular alley are unwaxed which deviates from the norm. My husband, who has his own ball, usually spins his ball but could not get the move to work without wax and had to change up his play style. Not sure if this is a conscious choice or if the lanes just needed a proper waxing but it definitely changes the experience. We all bowled pretty badly, though I can't totally blame them for that. It's been a while. Lol But the lack of wax definitely contributed. While we were alone most of the night, another group eventually showed up not to bowl but to eat. This place seems as much a restaurant as it is an alley so you can plan on either experience here. Or both! The alley is a little dark, a bit cluttered with bowling balls stacked absolutely everywhere, and the service was kind but detached, but it's not a bad place at all. Definitely somewhere we might stop into if we ever come back through.

My two young children had a blast. We probably could have stayed here for hours, but we only dropped by for an hour and a half. But we packed a lot in during that time. Combat Ops has a huge laser tag arena, an area to have Nerf battles, a laser maze, miniature golf, miniature bowling, outdoor axe throwing, an arcade, and an eatery area with local beer. It's basically the perfect place to bring your kids and relax while they play (or join in the fun -- whatever you want to do). I would say that most of the games and entertainment is geared toward older kids and teens (and adults). For instance, my younger child wasn't able to do the laser tag because the guns were a bit heavy for his little arms. But that was pretty much the only thing, other than axe throwing, that he couldn't do. Younger kids would love the miniature bowling, because the balls are small and can fit in a little hand. The miniature golf was also a favorite because what little kid doesn't like putt-putt golf?! My personal favorite was the Nerf arena. We booked a half hour, and they make you watch a safety video, then tell you the rules, and then have you put on safety glasses and let you pick out a Nerf weapon. There is always someone walking around to make sure everyone is playing safely. As a mom who worries about everything, I appreciated all of the extra steps Combat Ops takes to make sure everyone is safe! They aren't obtrusive about it -- just insistent, which I like. The person monitoring our session suggested some games that we could play, which made the experience even more fun. We had a great time playing capture the flag and freeze tag with our Nerf guns. Another favorite of ours was the laser maze. You step into a foggy room, and try to get from one side to the other without tripping the lasers. I think we did the laser maze at least six times! It was a lot of fun. My kids didn't want to leave this place when it was time to go, and they're already talking about how they want to come back for their birthday. Combat Ops really is a super fun place for families, and my family can't wait to go back.

There were plenty of open lanes, I had a great selection of shoes and there was so little noise you could literally hear a pin drop. My only complaint is that the place seemed understaffed and there really wasn't enough light in the building to see my ball roll down the lane. I felt very safe when I looked around the building and saw not just 1 but nearly 20 police officers on duty protecting us from the various threats of Columbia City like rioting, street gangs, Isis, and many others. After our second game, we saw what we thought was the mystery machine from scooby doo pull up outside. But instead of a couple of awkward teenagers and a talking dog, a bunch of black storm troopers hopped out of the back. I kind of like Star Wars so I wasn't really complaining. It was kind of cool to see the reenactments in person and I'm really surprised the bowling alley of such low, fair price could afford a Star Wars reenactment right before the big premier of the new movie this year. The performance even ended with a life sized R2D2 that actually roamed around on its own! SO COOL! Overall my experience was something I'll never forget. I've never had so much fun on a memorial Monday before! 5/5!
