Ardy (the owner) can fix practically any broken frame, his prices are CHEAP but his work is excellent.

It was due to the excellent reviews here that I went to Skokie Optical, not realizing that when…read moreRosen took it over it lost all the aspects that made it such a fantastic optical place. They only take appointments here on Mondays, and the lab is no longer being used. We booked our appointments 2 weeks out, only to have someone call us a week before the appointment in August to reschedule to a week later. When we got there, we were warmly welcomed and the optometrist did a decent job. We had decent optical insurance. I used to work in the optical industry many years ago, and I found Rosen's model remarkably similar in its predatory nature. Rather than point us to the frames and lenses that would receive the most coverage through our insurance, the optician pointed us to the most expensive lenses our personal money could buy. We bought 1 pair of single vision lenses and 1 pair of progressives through the insurance, plus 1 pair of single vision lenses out of pocket. After the insurance was applied, the out of pocket for the insurance-paid glasses and those I purchased out of pocket were nearly identical--upwards of $300 each. Tack on another $600 out of pocket for the progressives after insurance was applied and the glasses were $1200+. When I asked the optician to convert the lenses over to what was covered, she argued that the total amount we'd save was a mere $40, which was disingenuous at best because that was the difference in out of pocket cost, per lens, but my insurance covered a higher proportion of the insured lenses than the specialty ones. When I asked what was remarkably better about the upgraded lenses, the optician said "you can see better out of them" with absolutely no further explanation about how, qualitatively, they improved vision. The bonus was when the single vision glasses took over 3 weeks to arrive. When I called to ask about them, they said this was standard timing for all glasses throughout the industry, which I know is false because even 20 years ago with an external lab glasses were delivered within a week unless they were really specialized, like glass trifocals. The progressives took 6 weeks apparently because the first make didn't pass inspection. We will not be back to Rosen and resume our search for an ethical optical place for next year. What a racket.

Unethical Billing, Aggressive Manager, and Hidden $140 Fees. AVOID…read more My experience was a nightmare due to non-transparent pricing and aggressively poor management. The initial scheduling call was confusing, and upon arrival, I was rushed to sign waivers with no visible price list. I was there for a simple annual exam with a $10 co-pay, which I confirmed with the staff. After the exam (where the doctor and technician were excellent), the manager demanded $150, claiming a mandatory $140 contact lens fitting fee. This fee was never disclosed, nor was I informed my specific contacts would void my insurance coverage. Eventually it was uncovered that the fee was only there because the particular brand THAT I WALKED IN WITH was a level 2 which was never disclosed. I did not even need a prescription for contacts so this was all hilarious When I requested an itemized bill, the manager was incredibly argumentative, claiming, "we don't do bills," and demanding immediate payment. After demanding to involve the doctor, the manager reluctantly accepted the $10 co-pay but retracted my contact lens prescription and trial lenses (which hilariously I had just signed a document required by illinois law stating that I had received contact lens prescriptions). This is a complete bait-and-switch operation driven by incompetent staff. Save yourself the headache and the surprise bill--avoid this establishment entirely. I hope the technician and eye doctor find employment elsewhere as they were lovely. Please retrain all your non medical staff immediately.

The store stands by its warranties. Recently, I bent the frame of a pair of my glasses. They fixed them immediately-- is less than one day! They did it in the store, so I didn't even have to use the warranty and could use it later if something happens to the glasses. Everyone there is also really skilled at helping pick out frames that look good on different face shapes. I also enjoy that the store is dog friendly.

We accept all insurance!" For my convenience since I had another appointment in Evanston that day, I visited the office to pick out new frames. I was greeted and was told that someone would be with me. There were several stations where some customers were being helped and some employees had no customers. I walked around the lobby to start looking at frames. Sat down for a few minutes and got back up and continued to shop the frames in the store until finally one employee that was sitting there with no customers asked if I needed help. REALLY?! I explained why I was there and she asked if I had insurance and I told her yes. She asked what kind. I told her. Then proceeds to tell me that they DO NOT accept my insurance there. I told explained that I was told by one of her colleagues that they did. She told me maybe I should go downtown. So...poor customer service, bad employee training, uninformed employees. All just bad and a total waste of my time. DO BETTER!

The staff were lovely, the service wonderful, and the glasses beautiful. When I moved to Wilmette, I found this was the closest location to my new home, and I will never go back after what I experienced. My husband went first, and told me the staff were obnoxious and aggressive about selling glasses, which was the opposite of our experiences over the last 15+years at the other locations. I went to see for myself, and completely agree. The woman was rude, pushy, and judgmental. When I told her I wanted a second pair and therefore did not want to spend a lot, she got very nasty and rude, and bristled at my decision. When I came to pick up my glasses, she completely ignored me, turning her attention to shoppers and those waiting to see the doctor who obviously did not need to be helped. Her behavior was classless and rude, and she cheapened the experience when clearly this establishment has beautiful items and is part of a lovely larger chain. Evanston, you can learn a lot from the Southport, Roscoe, and LaSalle locations - they have it together! Your nastiness and judgement have no place in such a sweet neighborhood. Please treat customers kindly and respectfully and reserve your judgement for your own purchases.
