Title: Shocking Disappointment at Eye Openers - A Clear Case of Misleading Practices I'm beyond disappointed with my experience at Eye Openers. While my exam with Dr. Hinspeter was exceptional, the rest of the experience, especially with the staff, was appalling. Here's a breakdown of the issues: I had my first appointment on 2/28/25 with Dr. Hinspeter, and it was genuinely the best eye exam I've ever had. The doctor took the time to explain things I hadn't learned before, and I felt well-cared for. However, everything took a turn after the exam. I have endured months of being run-around just to get my eyeglasses prescription. The staff member who assisted me was overly pushy about buying glasses from the practice. I had brought my own used Jimmy Choo frames to have re-lensed, but the staff member discouraged this by claiming it was difficult and risky to change lenses in used frames. He claimed they often break during the process (lie #1), and that my frames were too worn to safely re-lens without significant risk (lie #2). Instead, he aggressively pushed me toward their more expensive frames, even commenting, "You obviously like nice things." Feeling pressured, I left without ordering anything. I also was never offered a copy of my prescription, and I didn't think to ask for it. Per the FTC Eyeglasses Rule, this should have been provided right away, regardless of whether I requested it or not. A quick search revealed that I had been misled about the risks of re-lensing my own frames. A few days later, my husband went in to request my prescription. The same staff member refused to provide it, citing HIPAA (lie #3). He insisted I, the patient, would need to obtain it personally. This is incorrect, as eyeglasses prescriptions are not protected by HIPAA and must be provided immediately under the FTC Eyeglasses Rule. On 3/26/25, I called to request my prescription. I was told that due to HIPAA, they couldn't provide it by phone or email and that it would have to be faxed to me (lie #4). Since it's 2025, I don't have a personal fax machine, and that response was completely unhelpful. Another search quickly revealed that prescriptions can be provided by phone or email without issue. Finally, on 5/27/25, I walked into the practice to pick up my prescription, but the same staff member told me I couldn't be helped immediately and would need to wait until the doctor was free, after 2 scheduled eye exams. When I asked if I could sign a HIPAA release for my husband to pick it up later, he said, "We don't do that for prescriptions." That's when I knew something wasn't right. They'd been throwing HIPAA excuses at me for weeks, but now they were telling me I couldn't even sign a release? It felt like a deliberate attempt to stall and avoid complying with the law. After leaving, I returned with my husband, who asked for my prescription. Despite the staff member's previous denials, my husband walked out with the prescription in less than a minute. The staff had it sitting at the reception desk all along, waiting to hand it over, but no one asked me for my name or offered to help me. To sum it up, the staff at Eye Openers is either grossly uninformed about FTC and HIPAA regulations or are deliberately misleading patients to further their own interests. It's a shame that one person's behavior ruined what could have been a great experience. I really appreciated Dr. Hinspeter, but I won't be returning. (P.S. I'm now happily wearing my Jimmy Choo frames, re-lensed with ease, as I was originally told I couldn't do.) read more

Went for glasses to read, glasses had to be so close to my face to read it was insane. Dollar tree glasses worked better. The next appointment to get them adjusted was nearly a month away! Then I had some sort of issue with my eye, was given medication. After 3 days my eye actually looks worse. Called to get a different medication or something and was told the Dr. was unavailable and they don't know when she'll be in smh. There's also no answering service or emergency on call number available. The answering service says go to the ER. Once I get my glasses fixed I won't be back. Terrible service quality. I have been coming to Eye Openers ever since Dr. Hinspeter opened this practice. I have been extremely satisfied with the exam process. I was even able to examine the basics of my records to see the progression of my change in vision. You need to let them know your usage: driving, TV, computer, smartphone or reading. I have also been pleased with the customer service as it relates to scheduling appointments, making payments, using insurance. There are a variety of frames to choose from, some I don't like and others have been perfect. I learned that when choosing frames consider your activity level, so you don't get glasses that are too fragile. Some parts are easily replaced, more fragile frames may require purchasing a whole frame. I have tried contacts, but they are not for me. The process was fairly easy at the time. If you choose contacts, consider your home or work environment. If you are exposed to lots of dust, pollen or smoke - forget about getting contacts. Save yourself some time, money and aggravation...and stay away from Eye Openers....read on. On 8/18, I visited the Eye Openers store, owned by Hinspeter. I was taken after a short time as a walk in customer for an eye exam. The entire exam consisted of a simple phoropter exam, where the optician changes lenses to allow you to see clearly. No other examination was done..and the entire exam took less than 5 minutes. I then was taken to the retail area and given some options on glasses...lenses....etc. I was leaving a week later on a cross country vacation, so I needed to get new glasses prior. The timeframe that Eye Openers gave would not have allowed for the glasses to arrive in time. So, I began "shopping" glasses...and ended up at Lensecrafters, which was nearby. I provided the prescription and had glasses in the advertised one hour. Cool...right? The glasses were about a hundred dollars cheaper than quoted and were a designer brand. The only issue was....I couldn't see correctly out of them. Now...I've had new glasses before...and know that it takes a bit of time sometimes to adjust to a new prescription. So, I gave it some time. I went back to Eye Openers...again as a walk in....and asked if the prescription could be verified, as I just was not seeing clearly, especially out of my right eye. They verified the glasses against the prescription, talked to Hinspeter (who I was not privy to speak with) and came back to say that the glasses were made perfectly per the prescription, They told me to wear them for a week or so to see if I got "used to them". I felt like I was "shoo'd" away, and left...wondering why the Doc could not simply verify the 5 minute exam....as there was not a sole in the office. The day prior to my trip, which was 6 days after the glasses were made, I called Eye Openers, and explained that I could not see from the glasses. I also explained the above...that I had returned after getting the glasses....etc., etc., etc. I asked to make an appointment for the same day, which I was accommodated with for a 2PM appointment to verify my prescription. This was great, as I would easily have time to bring any corrections back to Lenscrafters and have them correct the lenses prior to my trip. So, I took a half day from work. When I arrived at EyeOpeners, I saw the woman who I had spoken with. She once again took my glasses, went back to the Hinspeter and verified the prescription against the glasses. She said that they were right on....to which I said "Yes...that's why I need to see the Doctor. I believe that she made a mistake with the prescription and want her to verify it". The woman then said to me that I could not see the doctor until at least 5PM, when she had seen all of her other patients. To this, I said...."I made a 2PM appointment, took a half day off of work, and she cannot see me until 5PM? Why did I make an apppointment?" It was as if the office was literally angry that I did not purchase my glasses at EyeOpeners and said..."screw you....suffer". I told them that I did not feel that I was being treated fairly, and that the reason was that I didn't buy my glasses there. There was no opposition to this...and I told them that I would be making a complaint with my vision care benefits provider, which I did. They had already been paid by the insurance company, so I filed a complaint and went on my vacation of a lifetime in Alaska with poor vision. When I arrived back from vacation, I called Lenscrafters where I bought my glasses and explained to them the situation. I made an appointment with their O.D. and went there for the subsequent exam, paying out of pocket. The exam there was VERY extensive, and thorough. When all was said and done, it was found that Hinspeter (notice I do not refer to her as Dr. Hinspeter) made a huge mistake with the prescription. Lenscrafters took my glasses, rebuilt and replaced the lenses and I left seeing properly within 2 hours total time. The moral of the story.....before you visit Eye Openers and Dawn M. Hinspeter...read the above again. If you want fair , accurate and complete service, in a timely manner...I'd strongly suggest going elsewhere. read more

I am extremely disappointed about the service (or lack of) and the total incompetency of the staff. I purchased two sets of glasses there, and after forking over $700+, both pair developed stress fractures which is caused by improper fitting of the lens to the frame. The first time I had to go back the lens had popped out of the frame, while I was driving home. The second time I had to take both pair back because of the stress checks on the edges of the lenses and after waiting for an entire month for the first pair, I was then told the second pair could not be replaced because they exceeded the warranty period of four months. This was after I was promised they would replace both pair. Each time they had to repair my glasses which necessitated sending them to some God awful offsite "lab", it took at least three weeks, if not four (they promise one week to ten days). They have absolutely no regard for quality customer service and they are horrific at communication and follow-up. They are experts at bait and switch, they prominently display Varilux and Transitions marketing materials and brochures, but they end up using sub-standard, unknown brands. I never ever experienced such an obscene level of incompetency, neither at America's Best, Walmart or Lenscrafters. read more

Consistently poor customer service over a period of time; one keeps hoping that conditions will improve and give people the benefit of the doubt that maybe they are just having a bad day, but seriously, folks, don't waste your time as we did, with Eye Openers. The receptionist, Christina, had an attitude every single time we asked for help with anything, from booking appointments, to general questions, to working out claims issues. Dawn runs a very close second with regard to attitude. No customer wants to be talked down to like they're a total idiot and with lots of sarcasm. It is very unprofessional to give a customer a big tone of voice and then deny that there is anything wrong with the way that they are speaking to you. Dawn said over and over "tell me what you want me to do" with regard to my insurance claim questions and then informed me that I should proceed with the insurance company and then get back to her, very condescending, no initiative, no going out of her way to help me, and no making either me or my husband feel like a valued customer, and my husband had just spent about 750.00 there. My husband never had experienced an optometrist who told him to "hang in there and let the contacts settle", especially when he said on the spot that they did not feel good at all; well he did "wait and see" for two whole weeks and it was a disaster for him, with headaches, blurred vision and irritatng discomfort. He threw those contacts in the trash and went back to his old ones. Finally, he pushed back and got Dawn to get the contacts right because at this point there was already money spent. A horrible experience on all levels. We don't understand what happened to good, old fashioned customer service. When a customer has questions or needs help, or is confused and frustrated about "discounts" in conjunction with their insurance so called "benefits", or most importantly of all tells you that the contacts are irritating -- that would be the time to show the customer that you are listening and that you are happy to help them, however they need your assistance.
