The doctor would not answer any questions. The person who helped me select frames was not polite and acted like I was stupid when I asked basic questions about pricing and my insurance. I have never left a negative review at any doctors office before in my life. The experience was that bad.

After eye exams are complete, you are required to make payment before you leave. I questioned why it would not go through my insurance, and was told I only have a co-pay. Flash forward two weeks later, I received my insurance claim showing what they covered and how much I owe out of pocket. A difference of $105!!! Huge difference!! I call the office to question that and was referred to another number for billing questions. I was told they had not yet received the payment from my insurance and I could call back in a week or so if I didn't get my reimbursement. A second call to billing 3 weeks later, I was told they have not received the insurance payment and to call back in August (a month and a half down the road, my insurance sent them a check 5/26). I questioned why the office made me pay all upfront without sending to insurance and was told that some office staff don't know how to collect. So easy to take the money from the rip, yet a long and winded process to get my money back! My advice is if you want a good eye doctor, go see Dr. Dowd but DO NOT pay all upfront or you'll be in hounding them for a refund.

Once I filled my paperwork out and calmed down a little bit, I was called back. The female that did my eye health exam knew what she was doing and how to do it. Ended up conversation and realizing what a small world it is when we were talking about Bellevue TN. We both have family in that small suburb in TN. The doctor, Dr. Kretch explained to me what was going on with my eyes and how important it is to protect my right eye. Explained what was wrong in the most detailed, yet simplified way than any other doctor I've had in all of these years I've been on this floating rock in space. definitely recommend this place if you need contacts or glasses or both.

I gave her my insurance information, their Dr ID# with my insurance, only for her to say she can't verify my coverage and needed to have her office manager look into it and call me back. Took 2 days to get back to me. we scheduled my appointment. I waited 2 weeks for this appointment. Appointment was confirmed via text. the day before my appointment I received a voice reminding me of my appointment and that there would be a $44.00 charge for the special retina screening that this doctor requires at all appointments. No matter if you are a new or existing patient. So I called the office to I quite about why am I just now being told about this charge. And mind you, insurance doesn't cover this. I was offered to reschedule with another doctor who doesn't require this. To reschedule would push me to Sept 18th. I asked for the office manager to give me a call. I was not paying for something that wasn't communicated to me when doing back and forth about verifying my coverage. The office manager did call me back and she understood that her office didn't communicate this properly to me. We split the cost. Now fast forward to the day of my appointment . Get there. The staff must have talked about me before coming to my appointment, because their attitude, body gestures and tone in their voice was cold. They were not friendly to me at all. Except for the doctor. He was good. But whoever employee # 034462. You were rude. I ordered my contacrs, paid and was handed my receipt without any communication as to if my contacts were in stock or not. So I asked. Rudely was told I will get a call in about 3-5 days.

I told him I would be ordering my glasses…read morefrom Zenni Optical because I could not afford the roughly $400 for glasses he was charging, as I am currently unemployed and searching for a job. I told him I generally have a difficult time getting the 'right' prescription after the first eye exam and always end up having to go back to get my prescription adjusted. This means 'I end up having to pay for glasses twice, so that is why I am going to someone good this time.' He warned me not to let someone else make the glasses because they are not quality manufacturers. He gave me a prescription for bifocals which he recommended, but also gave me the option of a single vision prescription and said I could get away with a single vision prescription for probably another year or so. Before I left his office, once he had already had my single vision prescription on his computer screen, he said 'I am going to tweak this a little' and went in and changed my single vision prescription. I ordered my glasses from Zenni Optical and found the prescription was not quite right. This is generally my experience: I get an initial prescription, have Zenni make them, they come back a little off, I go back to the doctor to get a re-check, I get a different prescription, I re-send that new prescription, and the second prescription is usually right on. Most eye exams cost somewhere between $50-$100; I paid $150 for Dr. Doud because I was under the impression that he was better than the corporate chains. When I went in for my re-check he initially thought I just needed my glasses adjusted. I told him I needed my eyes re-checked and he said 'Oh, okay, in here,' directing me to his examination room. He asked me what the problem was and I told him that my eyes feel a little stressed with the glasses and one eye just didn't feel quite right, so I need my prescription adjusted so I can have Zenni make me another pair. At that, he said "Well that's your problem right there, you didn't get your glasses from me. You are on your own.Immediately, he was noticeably angry and abrasive. I kept my composure and I said, 'well can you re-check my eyes' as I always have a hard time telling which slide is better as he flips through the slides and asks '1 or 2 etc.' He said "You did not buy your glasses here, so no." I said "but the prescription might not be right.' he responded, 'I stand by my prescription.' I said "Well, can you at least give me the initial prescription you gave me before you tweaked it before I left so I can try that prescription?;' he didn't remember tweaking my glasses. I keenly remembered him going back into his computer and adjusting my prescription right before I left and expressed that to him. He still didn't remember and tried to fight me on it a little, telling me it must be the progressive lenses that was the initial prescription I was thinking of and that the tweaked prescription was the single vision prescription. I told him no, that he had both prescriptions already listed on his computer, one for the progressive and one for the single vision, and then went in and adjusted the single vision. He couldn't remember doing that so I asked him to check if he still had the initial single vision prescription listed. He checked and did not have it and told me there was nothing he could do. Again, I asked him if he could re-check my eyes to see if the prescription is the same. He told me 'No, I don't make any money off of you because you don't buy your glasses here.' 'I'm sick of people coming in here and getting a prescription and then thinking the can just go on the internet and get glasses.' Right off the bat he was quite abrasive with me, but he was getting quite mad at this point. I said I told him I paid quite a bit ($150) for the eye exam and it is generally understood that a patient can come back and get their eyes rechecked if they think their prescription need to be adjusted.' He told me, "Well you didn't buy glasses here.' I don't make any money off the eye exam, that just covers my administrative costs.' "This is a cut throat business and I am having an increasingly hard time staying in business.' He went on and ranted about that for a bit. I told him 'Doctor, I have been completely polite and tried to talk to you and you are just getting all mad and being nasty to me, its not right.' He said, 'Well, I am sorry if I offended you...'; and went on to complain some more about people buying glasses online and how that is hurting his money.' Throughout this whole time he was quite nasty with me and I kept speaking calmly to him. I said, well I won't be coming back here, Dr. Dowd. He responded by saying, "I don't want you to come back here, I don't make any money off you.' This is almost exactly the way the conversation took place. I really make an effort in my everyday life not to raise my voice or get nasty with people, its just a spiritual conviction of mine.
