It was like being back in school and your best friend is trying some stuff out on you for funsies. Everyone was chatty and sweet and having a blast. I really needed that energy. I've never taken time to write a not-so-great review on a business before, but unfortunately this…read moreexperience calls for it. I had very reasonable expectations going into Monarch for a haircut/bleach and tone. I've gone to beauty schools for services before, and understand the nature of it as well as the risks. But I've never left one completely dissatisfied. Here's the thing, though- The student did maybe 10% of my cut. The instructor did the remaining 90% And not only did she ignore what I asked for, she botched what she gave me. The photo I showed her is far from the cut I received. It is SO much shorter, the layers are very rough, blunt, and uneven, and the shortest layer is literally unstylable. I explained that I needed enough length to curl daily. I was far more after a little volume and hair health than a full on transformative haircut. If the student had done this, though I'd obviously still be upset about the outcome, I feel it'd have been excusable, and would have understood. I wouldn't be writing this review. But there is no reason whatsoever that a licensed cosmetology instructor should have been so very careless in this situation. I felt there was zero caution exercised, and it was just immediate chopping off major length, no work up to it. So it was too late pretty much instantly. And even the student was visibly jarred upon watching. I voiced that she cut it way too short, and she told me that she left far more length than my photo showed, which frankly felt insulting because it just simply isn't true and anyone with eyes could see that. Not to mention that later on in the appt when her student asked her how much longer she should leave my bleach in after checking me, she didn't even look and said "her hair will tell you." I understand the sentiment, but that's not teaching. That's a disservice to her students whom are paying top dollar to be there. I'm not going to name the student, as she did a very good job on my bleach/tone, and I don't want her name to be associated with a 1-star review. The instructors name was Mrs. Ramirez, who I've come to understand is head cosmotology instructor. It's very unfortunate, because now I'm in a tough spot trying to find a stylist whom can install extensions ASAP as I cannot go to work like this. So I'm going to be out several hundreds of dollars, and several hours of my day (which I have to take off work for) I'm not sure how the other instructors operate, so I can't say to stay away from this place entirely, but I would definitely discourage having Mrs. Ramirez oversee/participate in your services. Her approach is far too lackadasical.

My daughter went here for a few months and our experience was awful. The esthetics teacher at the…read moretime was Mrs. Corona who unfortunately couldn't speak English correctly. She couldn't explain things well or use the correct terminology of the things they were supposed to learn. But the worse is that she wouldn't even really try to teach. She would often tell the girls she was about to retire anyway (which she did halfway through the course) so she didn't really care. Day after day my daughter came home and told me the teacher had spent several hours talking about herself and her life, her personal problems, plans for the future etc. This was during Covid and my daughter also said the teacher would not wear a mask and would sneeze and cough without even covering her mouth at all. Who even does that, Covid or not? My daughter also brought to my attention the school wasn't very clean, the classroom used for esthetics was a small room where also they had to take clients in for treatments because they didn't have a separate place. It often got used as a break room by the students so it would smell of food as well. Another issue that kept coming up was that Mrs. Corona spent most of the class time, literally hours on end talking about her personal life and going on long breaks. The students didn't know what to do. They had no daily schedule to follow. The classes were not structured at all in any way shape of form. Mrs Corona would go on hour to hour and a half lunches cutting into the students learning/class time. Apparently she felt she was entitled to long lunches because she was diabetic. At least that was what she told my daughter when she asked why they never observed a 30 minute lunch like they were supposed to. One day the students were told the State Board was coming that week and they needed to prepare for it. WTH? Mrs Corona pretended for that day only that the students were actually being taught lessons. For that day only she printed out a schedule and a fake lesson plan and posted it to the wall. She also told the students to take a 30 minute lunch only that day while the State Board was there. My daughter came home and told me she couldn't believe all the lies. It got so bad the students had taken it upon themselves to teach each other since the teacher was physically present (so she could get her paycheck) but unwilling to actually teach. And god forbid you asked her a question about aesthetics or skin and interrupted her story about her house or her grandkids. She would berate you for it. We couldn't take it anymore. We had spend thousands paying this school for my daughter's education, which she wasn't receiving. So I felt like I had no option but to make an appointment to see Mrs Avina, the owner of the school. My daughter and I came in person and I told her everything that was going on. Her words to me were "I know I know". So after that appointment I saw that Mrs Avina was aware of all that was going on but chose to take no action. She kept on gladly accepting new student enrollments and receiving funds from the state of California as well, as they are a school that offers financial aid. MRS. Avina gave me excuses and said "good instructors are expensive", basically admitting that she has hired someone who doesn't know how to teach and doesn't even care to teach the students. Just so she could continue to collect the tuition money. This is BLATANT FRAUD. So I chose to withdraw my daughter from this school and enroll her elsewhere where she had to start from scratch since she had not been taught anything at this place. Other observations: other students that have gone here have also said the teachers don't teach and that the school is dirty. Be careful though, some of the positive reviews for this school are not real and some of bad reviews have been deleted. This school didn't even have a dedicated laundry room or a freaking autoclave to disinfect the tools used on students and clients faces. That is disgusting and I'm pretty sure against health code. If you are considering this school for yourself or a loved one thank God you came across my review first. Don't go there. This ia a pathetic excuse for a school. Tour other schools in the area. They may cost more money but you pay for what you get.

PLEASE READ BEFORE MAKING A DECISION TO ENROLL!!…read more I wanted to wait an adequate amount of time before posting this to see if it was still worth posting. I almost didn't but I don't want any one else to go through the same thing I went through. I was a past student at Jama's Beauty and Barber College and think that people SHOULD NOT attend this school. There is so many wrong things with this school. Firstly, the director Ms. Jama and the school itself. Many have described her as controlling and rude. So many students have complained about her. Most of the cosmetology students either dropped out or transferred to a different school (NOT BECAUSE THEY GRADUATED). One day the entire cosmetology room was filled, the next less than 10 students remained. Many of the students that did transfer talk about how they're learning so much stuff at their new schools compared to this one. How they're new school is so much better and how they're glad they left this one. How their instructor here lacked and felt like they didn't learn anything from her. A student on the esthetician side had complained about the door beeping from the wind (makes a sound when the door opens) and about the uncomfortable seats to Ms. Jama. Ms. Jama called her a "Little princess" despite their concerns being reasonable. The same student broke down weeks later because of how they disliked the school so much and how it drained them. Many of the other students agreed. That student later dropped out. Another time a student had requested new towels be bought since both esthetician students and cosmetology students were using the spa room. Esthetician students had been rotating laundry, THE SECOND a load was done, another was added. Ms. Jama responded with "No you guys need to stay on top of the laundry that's why you guys are running out." When the student tried to explain that the esthetician students were on top of it, Ms. Jama ignored her and said the same thing and how they should be better at staying on top of the laundry. No new towels were bought. Judging by the other negative yelp reviews, you can tell that Ms. Jama DOES NOT take any accountability nor does she care since she just copy and pastes her same responses to most of the negative reviews. Secondly, the school's supplies and kits. Both cosmetology and esthetician students have complained about the kits either because of unusable/broken items or being outdated. Unusable old eyelash glue, broken hairdryer dryers, etc. There are multiple steamers by the restroom on the esthetician side that don't work. This school teaches about sanitation and contamination but yet has 2 broken trash cans - 1 in the spa room and 1 in the manicurist area (You have to lift the top to throw stuff inside). When instructors are told about either trash can, they're just told along the lines of "Oh.. I'll let Ms. Jama know" and nothing is ever done about it. Those have been there for over a year. The chairs in the lecture rooms on both the cosmo side and the esthetician side are very uncomfortable foldable chairs, the kind you use for parties. Your back and butt will ache so much at the end of the day on those chairs. A student had once complained about them to Ms. Jama herself and was told "Just bring a pillow from home." A school that also teaches about ergonomics by the way. The school takes pride in having classes only 3 days a week, but it's so hard to attend school when you are so completely bored out of your mind. Even harder when you're working a full time job to pay for the school. Theory days are the worst. You spend 8 hours doing book work and the lectures are just the instructor reading straight out of the book. There's no engagement what so ever. Students can finish 2+ chapters each theory day but just because you can do that doesn't mean the class will progress with you. So there's no point in doing that. On the other two days, you can work hands on but it still feels like a drag. A lot of students have complained about the lack of enthusiasm or engagement on school days. Many of the students who have graduated complained about how they wanted to leave and transfer out but stayed only because they already invested so much money into the school. There are many more things I could list but those are the main concerns and complaints past and present students had about the school. Enroll at your own risk. I highly suggest looking some place else to go to school.
