I rented a 24-hour access unit at the Public Storate location at 12716 W 63rd Street in Shawnee…read moreKansas at the end of March 2026. Marcia informed me that I could use the lock I'd used at a previous storage facility - not necessary that I use the lock provided by Public Storage for a fee. I moved approximately $2,000 worth of power tools into that storage locker within a couple of days of renting it and secured the door with the lock I possessed. A week later I returned to place more items in the locker. My lock had been drilled through and all my power tools removed. The attendant's comment: "You should have used one of our locks. They have added protections." So, my items were not secure for even a week. I wouldn't recommend anyone plan on storing their belongings at this location. Fortunately - or so I thought - I had retained PS's insurance on the unit - up to $5,000. Shouldn't have a problem, right? Well, now their insurance company is requiring me to provide proof of ownership of each item - receipts, owners manuals, photos, etc. Some were gifts, and several were acquired more than 10 years ago. I couldn't be more frustrated with this situation. I counted on the facility to secure my items. They failed. I then counted on them to make me whole, and they're signaling an unwillingness to do so. Feels like they're hoping to not have to pay and want to make the claim process difficult enough for me that I'll give up and they won't have to. Strongly suggest you avoid this place. You're items will not be safe here, and their insurance will not protect you unless you've kept detailed documentation.
