Butter Coffee has always served great coffee ever since it's opened. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the baked goods. This afternoon both my friend and I ordered scones and the fellow beside had also ordered a scone. My friend finished hers as she was hungry. i couldn't eat mine and the fellow beside us, drank his coffee and abandonded his scone after one bite. The scones were hard, lumpy, burned on the top and too salty. Sorry, the coffee is great as is the staff but the scones should be removed from your menu. Three "no"s to the scones. read more

They literally put butter and coconut oil in their extra butter coffee and honestly, it was a bit of an acquired taste. The barista was a nice guy, I asked what gluten free options he had. He double checked with the owner - which I appreciated. The owner said they had a banana bread that was gluten free. I asked if he was sure there was no gluten. He became defensive and came back with an assertion "no, I'm not gonna guarantee there's not cross contamination". Again, I appreciate his honesty but His defensiveness wasn't necessary. I won't go back. He'll be relieved to know. read more

I first wandered into this cafe because I assumed their name indicated that they sold Bulletproof coffee, which they do! For those of you who are unfamiliar, Bulletproof coffee is made with 1-2Tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter and 1-2Tbsp "brain octane oil." It's supposed to boost cognitive performance and weight loss, and from my experience it definitely provides more alertness and clarity than a typical cup of coffee. It does taste like coffee made with butter so I recommend starting off with a small cup to see if you can get through a larger portion. It's not yum, but it's not eww either. It's just different and worth trying if you're keen to optimize your brain and body health. I've also tried some of their baked goods, which are made on-site and quite reasonably priced. I enjoy this little cafe and definitely recommend others check it out next time you're wandering Roncesvalles and trying to choose a place to grab coffee or a snack. read more

Would you like some butter with your coffee? The butter coffee is City Dark blended with coconut oil and grass-fed butter with specific ratios. Apparently, a cup of butter "bulletproof" coffee can be a breakfast meal replacement. The fats are supposed to increase energy and promote ft burning all day. The barista couldn't explain why it's popular to add butter to coffee. O_o Butter coffee tastes like popcorn and coffee - together. If you want that movie-going breakfast experience, I'd say give it a try! This small coffee shop does make delicious looking donuts in house. I'll stop in again, but for donuts! read more

Known for its pastries, I came for a late breakfast on a lazy Saturday morning. You know you're in for a hipster vibe when the name is not on the top of the cafe but printed on the windows. Luckily this place doesn't overdo it, and manages to remain more accessible to families and the community. Breakfast tart $5-6 was a bit expensive but worth it as it's a pastry with breakfast hash topped with a sunny side up egg. Brewed coffee $2.25 was strong and well roasted as well. Not much selection for sandwiches so for now it's a breakfast and afternoon spot, but it's only a matter of time before they get in on the brunch/lunch crowd. read more

Last week I had lunch with a friend who was droning on about how she had just been to a "doctor" and because she had "too much protein flakes floating in her blood," he determined that she was allergic to...guess what? Just guess! Yes, GLUTEN. Add her to the 97% of the population of Toronto who believes they have a gluten allergy while they blithely ingest copious sums of it insidiously through toothpaste and lip gloss. I was barely nodding my head while she was telling me about her new bird diet and while she was stuffing shards of parboiled broccoli in her mouth, I was doing that rude thing that people do: scrolling through my iphone because she was so boring and my Instagram feed was not. This is what I found: A plate of donuts from @extrabuttercoffee. Not just like any old Tim Hortons donuts, and don't get me wrong, me love those, I am at half-mast just thinking about them BUT! the Extra Butter donuts looked like they were made with the love of your grandma and glazed with the jizz of the mighty gods. That Sunday, my neighbours and I took our convoy all the way from the beach to Roncesvailles. And yes, we have coffee shops in the east end, enough that if you stacked one coffee cup lid on top of another and so on, you would get to the moon and back, 17 coffee shops per capita, 100% predictable: I'll have a grande latte with a gluten-free muffin and let me just plug my laptap here and scroll through Facebook while I pretend to work in my "coffice." Extra Butter Coffee is better than that. It smells like fresh, real baking (butter!!!!) and has a sweet deco-inspired decor that is homey and makes you want to hang and talk. There were 9 of us, we all had various pastries with our coffees, mine was a perfect americano by the way, I drink it straight black so I can judge with purity. I had two things: 1. A breakfast pastry that was a croissant-type bed encompassing a perfectly cooked egg which was beyond thrilling. Any time an egg gets cooked into an edible vessel is a culinary feat in my opinion. Take my money! And it was simply delish. 2. A donut, duh, that's what I came for. I wanted to try all of them but I went for the Boston Cream. It's a cakey type chocolate donut glazed with more chocolate and then injected with Boston Cream in the middle. Let's just say we had a moment. Afterwards, the lot of us went for a constitutional walk on the Roncy. It was one of those freezing cold but sunny days that I normally hate because I think the sun is just mocking us at that point like: "Come out, it's nice! Let me freeze your tits off, hahahahah!" But I didn't even care about the trolling sun, the egg and the donut made me that happy. read more

Are you a true coffee fan? Look no further than the newly opened Extra Butter Coffee. They serve Dark City Coffee and its really delicious. The shop itself is simple with bench seating and small tables on one side. Plenty of room for mom/nannies and their giant strollers. Something that drove me away from Lit Coffee down the street. They also bake some pretty yummy looking breakfast tarts and croissants that I will have to stop by one morning and try. They also were quick to set me up with a loyalty card. Don't open a coffee shop if you can't make a decent cup of coffee. My americano was bland. It was so watered down I could barely taste the coffee. A stamp card won't fix that. My croissant was more like a biscuit. Not flaky by any means. Our order of 2 americanos and 2 pastries came to $11.00. Had a hot chocolate and doughnut. The doughnut was good. The drink was good. But compared to other offerings in the area, I don't find too much excitement in Extra Butter. The decor made me feel a bit misplaced... old pictures intermingled with something like 'art', the photo of the crying woman caught my eye far too often. The vegan sandwich and Americano were good. So why did I only give this place three stars? The service. The service provided by one particular individual. After paying for my sandwich and Americano, I asked if she could possibly heat up my sandwich. She replied, rather rudely (and haughtily), "no, we don't have a microwave here." Then quickly turned away. She replied as if I had seriously offended her by asking to heat up my cold a** sandwich. RELAX, woman. To be clear, I didn't specifically ask for a microwave. Perhaps she had a smaller oven, or a sandwich press. A simple "no, we don't have a machine to heat it up" or "no, we can't or are unable to" would've sufficed. I wish her tone was a bit nicer. Then, of course, as regulars came in, she cheerfully conversed with them. Mind you, there's a chance that I'd come back to this place. Pastries were good. I had a bacon mustard pastry and my friend had an almond and regular croissants to go. Was not a fan of their chocolate something cookie-the cookie had chocolate chips and some raisons...it just didn't taste as good as it looked. We stopped in to Extra Butter on a friend's recommendation. It was extremely hot outside and extremely hot inside, so we decided to take our order to go. Two wet caps, two americanos, and an assortment of pastries later and we were on our way! The coffee was fantastic and worth the price of admission. Absolutely no complaints, and we'll be back next time we're in Roncy. The pastries weren't as top-notch, though I'll be honest I'm not the biggest pastry guy, so what do I know? The staff there were efficient and polite if not particularly friendly. I'm cool with that. Not everyone is outgoing/charming/me, but y'know what? If their coffee was served by an uppity jackass with a chip on his shoulder, I'd probably still come back. I'm buying coffee, not friends, and Extra Butter certainly has great coffee. My only real recommendation? Better air flow, maybe some AC. When it's in the 30s outside, it shouldn't feel hotter and muggier inside. Small quibble. We'll be back. read more

Had a networking 1-1 meeting here with a potential client. A cool little joint with some good quality snacks and decent beverages. Prices were pretty reasonable and the staff very friendly. I would return if I were coming back to this part of town. I like to support the independent shops. Also, bathroom clean. However step up to washroom would make it less accessible. read more

The location was a little hard to find because it is situated in between the residential area. However, I tried their hot chocolate and a plain croissant which was probably the best croissant ever. I come here twice a week for coffee, because my place of work is actually a steps away. Although I love the coffee, pastries, and snacks from Extra Butter, something unpleasant always ends up happening while here. The first time I visited, I had to deal with an overly grumpy cashier. The next time, a customer was staring at me as if I had a few hours left to live, and that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. During my most recent trip, I was somewhat verbally attacked at the cream/sugar section of the shop. As I was mixing my soy milk into my coffee, a customer continuously sighed and muttered words like "it's really not that difficult to mix milk" and "they need to redesign this place." I mean, come on, lady, I'm doing my best here. It's not like I want to stand around being grilled by these hipsters. OK- I didn't mean it like that. Sorry. But this is a hipster spot. I've been to extra butter often and the overall product quality is good. However, There is a significant difference in attitude from the staff. They are usually neutral towards me, not unfriendly at all. It is obvious they make a much bigger effort with other customers. That does matter. I often go to another Cafe( so many nearby) for no other reason than the staff is more genuinely pleasant. The food and coffee are good so I can handle the negatives sometimes, but not enough to be a regular. Other negative is the heat on a warm day and seating on bench is uncomfortable. Wifi is good and bathroom has always been clean and doesn't require a trip to a gloomy basement like other places. read more

One of my addictions. Why? Well lemme break it down for you. The coffee; love the espresso, love the dark roast, but I really love the beans they sell. I use them for cold brew, pour over, Aeropress, espresso. Yeah that's right, I come at it from all angles. The food. I used to be addicted to their chicken sandwiches, now I'm addicted to their yogurt cups, and omg their quinoa cupcakes wtf?? It's like a quinoa quiche with spinach and egg. Also their smoothies. And their staff. Currently one of their baristas is basically the nicest guy in the universe, the the two owners are goddamn hilarious. Great vibe and friendly to young professionals who need to get work done. Space sharing is more easygoing than at Lit down the street. I walk a couple extra blocks to enjoy a coffee or two while sending out work emails. They do make their own donuts-- great for a special treat. Sunshine through a bright window-- couldn't be happier. This is my go-to spot on the weekends for my morning Americano. Love their selection of hot beverages, as well as breakfast pastries (savoury and sweet). The bench outside is perfect for those who want to indulge in immediate gratification of their purchase, or just chill with their four legged companion. The wait/line up is never long, and pricing is definitely fair, considering the number of coffee shops in the area. This place has definitely made its mark on Roncesvalles. read more

Ive been here twice. The first time I just got a coffee and left. Coffee was good quality and gave me a good caffeine buzz. The decor is not that friendly or inviting, in fact the seating as I remember it from my second visit was rather uncomfortable and the place had a stodgy, stiff feel. The reason why I'm giving this place such a low rating is because the second time I came, the music was literally blasting. It was loud hip-hop which I have no problem with. I love rap and hip-hop, thats the type of music I primarily listen to. My main problem was the fact that it was SO loud. I sat down with my laptop to try to get some work done, and I just couldn't. I looked over, and the one other patron in the otherwise EMPTY place was reading a book AND had headphones on, presumably to drown out the music. What's worse, is that when another patron came in to order something, I saw the guy at the counter have to ask her 3 times to repeat herself because HE COULDNT HEAR! It was honestly embarrassing for me, because the cashier seemed so intent to blast his little hip-hop playlist that he was driving customers away. I love hip-hop and rap, but honestly, the music he was playing was better for the bar or the club, not a friggin coffee shop on roncesvalles at 2 pm in the afternoon. Like get over yourself bro, you're not really playing "background" music, and in case you didn't know, people don't come to coffee shops on Roncesvalles to listen to 'Ye and Dead Prez. Get real. ON TOP of all that, I heard the N-word in two of the songs. I thought this was gross, for a white cashier, in his little hipster coffee shop to be blasting music with no regard for those words, and how they could have the possibility to alienate some people. AND for the finale, the guy was friggin' rude and not even polite after i just spent almost 5 bucks on a fucken coffee. I actually left, and went down the street to Lit, where the people who work there are nice, and the music might not be my taste but its a low volume, and its lyrics aren't so powerful that they can easily fade into the background. I stopped into Extra Butter for the first time this morning. The coffee was very nice. The highlight however was the pastries. The maple-mustard-bacon bun was one of the most delicious coffee shop treats I've ever had. The managers, Ian and Cassandra, are such nice people. With pastries and service that good, it's a no brainier which Roncy coffee shop I'll be frequenting from now on. read more
