Trent told me his professional opinion was to use a thinner needle for my tattoo on my calf. After about 180 days, the tattoo looks like its fading. I mentioned it to Trent and he said that its because of the hair on my calf and has nothing to do with the needle he used. I went to another tattoo artist (Morris County NJ) who stated that it looks like its faded because he did not use the proper needle. I mentioned this to Trent who was extremely unprofessional and would not listen to what the other artist had to say. read more

I went here for my first tattoo a couple years back and it was one of the best experiences I could of hoped for. My mom and I went here as a walk-in and were greeted by Luis. He informed us that he had an appointment coming up but could take us in about an hour. It was great, there is a mall near by so we were able to shop a little as we waited. We came back and were in and out pretty quickly. Luis was so sweet and a great artist. He was very gentle and made me very comfortable. I have since gotten more tattoos since then and his work is still my favorite. He had the softest touch and was very reasonably priced. After years of contemplating and thinking about my next tattoo, I finally had an idea of what I wanted. I spoke to a couple of tattoo artists, and they all seemed to be too busy. Most came off as real cocky jerks. After hearing about Expressive Ink and Trent, I decided to make an appointment. I spent nearly 2 hours with him going over what I wanted and looking at samples. He told me to schedule a time in 3 weeks which would give him enough time to draw me some samples. After some minor changes, I had the perfect tattoo. I have never gotten my ears pierced and I decided it was time. I was terrified, but I booked Trent to get my ears pierced. He did a fantastic job and made sure to place them correctly. I'll start by saying I have only been here once, and this review is more based on my experiences with the particular artist (Kelly) than the shop itself. That being said, a friend of mine had a shoulder blade piece done by the owner (Trent), it is freaking awesome and came out exactly as he wanted. Anyway, Kelly has done 6 or 7 tattoos for me over the past decade (I have 12ish from 5 different artists) and I swear she gets better every time. Sure everyone's tastes for style may be different, but she is an incredibly skilled and versatile artist. She also has 13+ years experience so I don't really know what that rant on only inexperienced artists at this place was about..memo to that dude (who clearly got on Yelp one time in November of 2014 just to leave that review): you don't need to bash other shops just because you have a personal favorite elsewhere. But back to Kelly! Amazingly steady, smooth fine lines and the ability to do microscopic details. For example, the tattoo I got earlier today has a tiny little portion that is literally about the size of the tip of a needle which sounds insignificant, but getting it exactly right was crucial to the authenticity of the design. I.e. if it were off by 1/10th of a MILLIMETER (that's like the width of a strand of hair) it would've been ruined. Naturally, she nailed it. Oh, and if you've ever seen her portfolio you'd know that her portraits look like photocopies. SO again, today was the only time I've ever been to this shop and I only went there because I was looking to get work done by Kelly, but it's a sweet little spot that is comfortable, super clean with nice people who clearly care a lot about what they do. I will definitely go back for Kelly, and would recommend the place to others as well. read more

Though my experiences with Expressive Ink have only been piercing-related (I don't have any tattoos), I feel that the exemplary quality of this establishment has been so impactful as to inspire my first-ever online review. Paramount is the influence of a first impression--walking into Expressive Ink for the first time, I'd found myself far from disappointed by the atmosphere. An immediate sense of amiability upon being greeted by the owner, Trent, not to mention the indisputable cleanliness of the shop, fostered feelings of both security and comfortably. My friend and I were both there to get our noses pierced. She was apprehensive, but Trent was able to alleviate her uncertainty and ultimately provide her with a piercing that made her question why she hadn't gotten one sooner--the hoop was fitted perfectly, not appearing awkward and oversized as we'd anticipated. I was just as impressed with mine. He followed up with discussion of aftercare, in which he was impressively informative and thoughtful (he cares!!!). If a refreshing fusion of professionalism and satisfying conversation (he has a lot of great stories to share) is on your list of must-haves, then look no further. This place is awesome! There aren't that many great places to get tattoo'd around that area, but Expressive is definitely one of them! I went in on Friday the 13th for a traditional Friday the 13th flash tattoo. They had a $13/$31 tattoo special on small TGIF13 flash, so I decided to get one on the inside of my lower lip. Trent, the owner, was the one who did it. He told me all the precautions of getting a lip tattoo (ie: it can fade quickly, they're not that great to touch up, etc etc) and told me how to take care of it. But hey! For a cool $13 tattoo, I couldn't complain! He did a good job and made sure that he took his time, even though it was just a little tattoo with a short shelf life. Trent super friendly and his store is incredibly clean. Every artist thoroughly cleaned their stations before and after each tattoo. I liked their professionalism so much that I later went back and got another tattoo by the apprentice Darci! She was such a sweetheart. She's doing free flash tattoos that she designed, but Trent let her do a bigger, half priced, tattoo on my ankle. She was extremely careful to make sure her lines were straight. It was late, past closing time, yet she took her time to make sure that my tattoo was perfect. They definitely have my business. A+++ to the folks at Expressive Ink! read more

I left a $50 deposit down on a tattoo I had in mind and changed my mind last minute and lost my $50. I was told by the owner only way to keep that $50 is to get the tattoo I had the artist start to draw. So in other words unless you want to get this tattoo on your body that you chose but now don't want you're shit out of luck getting your deposit money back. Its complete bullshit. Great way to scam people. I cant imagine how many people lost money over the years with them. I'm sure any of them wouldn't appreciate being out $50. read more

One of the best places I have had the privilege of adding to my body art!!!! As a pierce-er, i immediately recognized some key things about this place : The sanitation level at the shop is impeccable, The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxing (great music too) And Trent is phenomenal! I have a few tattoos and piercings, but when I went to Trent I felt as if my last experiences with body art were cheated. I realized I was being over charged for low quality work. Trent pierced my nose twice. Once just a stud. I then went back for my septum - both times I was welcomed despite my walk-in habits and I felt at home instantly. Trent bends all of his jewelry himself on the spot ensuring a custom tailored fit to your body and he goes over the after care quickly yet thoroughly. I have always been blown away by the professionalism. I got a tattoo at Expressive Ink last night and it came out exceptional!! I mean, its beautiful. It was a hand drawing I was given and Trent fixed any out of place lines while making sure the artwork was preserved as well as maintaining the thin lines we were trying to achieve. I have been all over the US trying to get a tattoo like this. I was discouraged when the tattoo artists I was asking stated that it was impossible to tattoo lines that thin - HA WHAT A JOKE!! I was a bit apprehensive about the process since it was my first piercing, but he walked me through it and answered any questions I had. Probably close to the worst tattoo place to go to for good art in Jersey... Cleansliness they are fine and everything, nice people just not good tattoos... All amateurs there under 3 years experience besides the owner Trent who quite frankly isn't better then the apprentices in my opinion.. His work is sloppy and not top notch for a owner of a tattoo shop, does small bs pieces, no large detailed stuff that a guy that's been tattooing that long should easily be able to do... Want to get a amazing tattoo by a real tattoo shop owner? Go to pure ink and ask for Danny pain, he's a true owner who does some out of the world shit.. Compare his shit to trents and it's not even a question... At all.. Like it's laughable the difference. If you must go to expressive ink go to Kelly... Best one out of the bunch and that's not saying much.. Worst person at pure ink is 10x better then anyone at expressive.. No one under 6 years experience at pure ink. Do yourself a favor and get a real good tattoo at pure ink, plus expressive over charges... Charged me $200 for a 10 word shit on my inner arm...
