However, I was helped with the new check in process (open your camera and read the QR code) to set up your appointment and place in the queue. I was able to check in my place in the line. It started at 36 and in a couple of hours I was called to the window. I received great help from the DMV staffer and actually needed a printout of my driver record. For only $5 the insurance had what they needed and I had peace of mind. It's very busy here but amazing how many people and their issues are processed every day.

An appointment that should have taken 15 minutes tops, took well over an hour! The person who helped me was very friendly and did his best to speed through the paperwork, but the wait time is just ridiculous. Making an appointment ahead of time is no different that just showing up without one. Even showing up 10 minutes early, I was just given a number that was behind 14 other people. I know these 14 other people "showed up" before me, but I feel like people who make their appointments ahead of time should be given a different group number or be put into a different queue to be seen faster...otherwise what is the point? I know DMV employees are just trying to do their jobs, but with the way they run the place, it's not really surprising why so many people get mad or irritated with them. They really need to figured out a better system!

I arrived 4 minutes before my appointment. It was an 8:10 am appointment and the dmv just opened at 8am. Window 13 clerk just says "ID Code". My "Drivers license number or my appt code?" Exasperated he says "no, your last name and the time for your appt." Weird, I wouldn't think of this as a code. I provide the info. He asks " did you fill out the information online?" I said I did but I'd done it 3 years ago and again 2 months ago when I set my appointment, he just heavy sighs and says "go take the test. It's at the wood door." I look behind him from where I was and I can see 5 wood doors. I asked which one? He raises his voice and says "THE WOOD DOOR." I can see that this dude will be as useful as a butthole on my elbow, so I just decide to walk around and fine it. I complete the form in about 6 minutes and I see my 4 digit code next to window 14. I go to window 14 and see they are helping a person. So I stand in the appt line again and window 13 sees me and does this exaggerated eye blink and says "you again?" I gesture to window 14 and say the board says I'm supposed to go to window 14 but someone is there. Then the clerk at 14 says "I'll get to you in a minute." with an edge in his voice. Jfc, this place just opened and all of the employees seem so salty and surly. So I wait behind the woman being helped at 14. I proceed to hear Window 13 be a total dickhead to the next 3 people. He even said to one person "it's my job to direct people and I'm good at my job." In my estimation, this was an inaccurate statement. I will say, that while my window 14 person started off surly, he was quite nice by the end of our transaction, but here's the thing: Most of us don't work at the dmv and most of us are not going to the dmv more often than once a decade. We the general public don't have an intimate knowledge of the building layout or the systems in place. Maybe if these DMV folks showed a little bit more grace and understanding, they would get less flack, less flack would mean less stress, less stress would mean less dmv workers that hate their job and show it at the beginning of the shift. Customers service is hard and some customers a just total buttholes, but you can't treat every customer as an automatic butthole.

Finally talked with a manager who said he would investigate. He admitted that there is a chronic problem of lost license plates due to clerical errors. Two weeks later: The plates arrive. The package was postmarked 3 days previously. So the plates sat in some twilight zone box on some one's desk for 17 months. I'm a pro public service endorser, and was a CA state employee for 17 years. But this agency needs an entire overhaul. Replacement of upper management and all poorly performing employees is warranted. The given the exorbitant DMV fees and our high CA taxes we deserve better service.

I usually can renew my license by mail, as many do, but every so many years, I have to go in and get an updated photo (aging is awesome, lol) and for an eye exam (another attribute of aging, lol). When I received a notification that I had to go in, I went online and made an in-person appt ASAP. This office is most convenient to me and it's very popular. It was scheduled out like a month! Still thankful I got an appt before my license expires altogether. Went at my appointed time, I sign in right away and the rep at the desk was helpful. After checking in, I waited about 10 min's and then was served at one counter where I did an eye test quickly, paid the fees (wow, inflation) and then was given paperwork to wait for my photo at another dedicated counter. Thankfully, the whole building is cooled nicely and there's plenty of seats for waiting. There is no wifi, fyi. That took another 10 min's wait or so and then I was all done and ready to go. Altogether about 30-40m at this DMV. Overall, a smooth and uneventful experience for which I'm very grateful. This office is super busy, so if you need to come here, my advice is to book an appt online and be on time to report to your appt so you don't lose it.

Both agents I spoke with essentially agreed the registration went to the wrong address, but neither could offer me a waiver of fees for the "replacement" registration that I never received in the first place. Obviously this is only the latest in a string of incidents just like this one - just read the other reviews here and it's apparent what a regular occurrence this is.

The waiting area is clean, there are snacks, coffee, places to charge. The people are friendly. They do a multi-point digital inspection where they send you a photo of everything they checked, whether it needs service or not. That's genuinely cool, and it's included when you have service done. But you, the customer, are absolutely overpaying for that service, and I believe that's where the cost of all that technology lives. For my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, I was quoted $763.49 for front brakes and rotors, $707.48 for rear, and $150.39 for cabin and engine air filters. They also recommended a brake fluid flush at $244.95. With tax, over $2,000. I looked up what these should cost. Brakes and rotors on my car at an independent shop run $600-1,100. The flush should be $90-150 - even a dealership would charge around $180-220, still less than their quote. I called five other shops, all within a mile or two. Every single one was under $1,000 for brakes and rotors. The shop I chose did brakes, rotors, and filters for $592.73 - less than half of what Stress-Free quoted for brakes and rotors alone, before tax. This wasn't an isolated incident. My synthetic oil change was quoted at $127 - meanwhile, the fair price for my car is $75-90. They only came down when I called and mentioned a competitor's pricing. You shouldn't have to negotiate a fair price on something as basic as an oil change. The last time I was here, they put a branded license plate frame on my car and told me it'd get me $20 off my next visit. That $20 was never applied. It's a promise they didn't keep, on a car they branded for free. And as long as that frame is on my car, I'm driving around advertising a shop that overcharged me on every service & basically telling everyone I'm a sucker who happily overpays for things. I removed it the second I got home. Their transparency did help me, just not in the way they intended. Seeing every item priced out made it easy to compare. Once I did, the gap was impossible to ignore. The technology is nice. The people are nice. The inspection with photos is cool, and it's free. But you're paying for it, and what you're paying is two to three times what honest shops - or even dealerships - charge for the same work.
