The service…read moreadvisor (Billy, I think) came out and looked and showed me why it couldn't be patched (which I verified with a family member who was a dealer service manager). He check if they had the tire to match, but no. So he called 3 other stores, but no. So he called a Ford dealer and asked them to fit me in because I was in in midst of a drive for New Hampshire to South Carolina and really needed this fixed. Truly, above and beyond effort!

I came in for a state inspection... first time in NY, I had no idea what to expect... the first guy…read morejust acted with a bit of disdain ... whatever. I wait a few hours, they found a code P1622 on my Jeep and changed the downstream O2 sensor. They told me to drive around a bit and it should stay cleared. The second I got home, the light came back on. So I drove around about 320 miles over the weekend and light was still on. I come in on Monday and they said they'd take a look at no charge and asked if they could drive it after to clear the EVAP code which was the only one left. I was there from about 10am and they came over to me just before 5pm when they closed. He asked me if I've ever changed the clutch since owning the car (which had over 120k miles on it.... and I had... just once about 4 years ago)... then I'm told that if I'm accelerating and it feels like it's slipping that the clutch is due to fail.... then he drops the truth and tells me that he has driven all kinds of cars over the years... and says it multiple times. Already a red flag. He said that he had to have the car towed after driving about 30 minutes or so... and said that the clutch was completely burnt out. Now, I've been driving that car and yes, there was some slipping to where while I was sitting there, I started looking up locations for transmission places.... but since he drove so many types of cars as he said, I'm surprised he wasn't aware of this... and left me with a car which used to shift in gear but now smelled like there was an electrical fire and the gear does not engage at all now. Then on top of that, "there are 4 tests left that didn't pass on inspection so I can't give you a pass for the light going out since it can't be driven [because I broke it]...but I'm not going to charge you for it." So basically, he's more concerned that he'd be blamed for breaking the car, I guess, and seems to want to blame me for what he thinks is my not replacing the clutch.... my clutch was usable far more than the condition he left it in. So if he didn't drive it, I'd have a partially drivable car which I've been driving around relatively fine for a bit and could've gotten to a transmission place after.... instead of being left with a car I couldn't even move. He told me to call AAA to get the car towed... but no one told me that AAA wouldn't tow off the lot of an auto place without permission from the office who just closed up for the day and went home. They referred me to the Clifton Park Jeep dealership and if you've ever called that place, it sounds like the most dysfunctional service dealership... who earlier told me that they'd not serve cars 10 years old with the statement of "they won't service cars that old." I found another place in Latham, NY that would see the car, but at that point, I was so frustrated with everyone that I decided it's not worth the effort and will just total the car. The Jeep in Latham told me that the clutch is no longer made but they could get a 3rd party aftermarket part... and could probably fix it.... So while I didn't get overcharged for it, this is the 2nd clutch (1st and only one at this location) where someone working in the garage was more forceful with driving it than I would have been and just left the car in far worse condition than I left it.... now the car is being junked and I ordered a new car.... No hard feelings... just multiple levels of frustration and disappointment to where I drove the car there and had to have it towed the next morning back home where someone's going to pick it up and likely just give me enough money to cover for what I ended up spending here which was about $560.

I have had my fair share of negative experiences with a variety of mechanics and I can confidently say that the employees at Gil's make it a point to do honest, high-quality work. While many auto body repair shops operate on a flat-rate system, paying their technicians only when there is work to be done, Gil's pays their employees a salary regardless of whether or not they find anything wrong with your vehicle. This ensures that they do not unnecessarily look for work to perform. I dropped my car off to have a wheel bearing replaced, as well as rear shocks and a new set of tires. The work was completed promptly and at a fair price. I did have a minor incident when I picked up the car and I was able to work with the owner, Paul, to resolve the issue. I do not have enough good things to say about Paul. He is a value driven man that recognizes the importance of building a relationship with his customers. When my car needed additional work beyond what we had discussed originally, he was willing to defray part of the costs of the repair because he and I both felt that it was an issue that should have been detected initially. In all of my years of owning a vehicle I have never had an auto repair shop take that stance, regardless of whether or not they were at fault.

Today was a crappy day…read more Hottest day of the year so far, and I have a tire blow out while on my way to Saratoga Springs. Fortunately, at some point in the past few years, I learned the manly art of changing a tire. Dripping wet, sticky with sweat, filthy, hot, smelly, and tired, I limp into The Tire Warehouse on a spare donut. Desperate for a tire, and late for a meeting, I was resigned to pay a stupid amount of money to get back on the road. Granted, I got lucky. It was such a hot day, I was told that the place was less busy than it typically would be on a Monday afternoon. So they were able to get me back on the road in an hour. The whole thing cost me less than $100. And the bathroom even had pumice soap to get the tire grime off my hands from changing the tire. The only thing that could have been better is if they had showers and somehow could have lent me a change of clothes. But that's not realistic, is it. I guess a massage might have been nice too. But they did have a water cooler full of cold water that helped rehydrate me, so I was ready for my meeting. In all seriousness, if you are in a bind, I would not hesitate to trust this shop.

Some examples of how well they treat their customers:…read more 1: They make sure only one person ever works on my car and it's someone who is used to working on my type of car. 2: Multiple times they have brought me into the garage itself to warn me of a potential problem that could come up during a repair. Only once did this develop into something but by doing this they made sure nothing came up as a surprise extra cost and I'd be able to see the potential problem myself. 3: Certain parts for my car are hard to get. Twice they built their own workarounds to re-mount certain things, specifically the radiator fans, rather than buying the part brand new super expensive from the dealership simply to avoid extra cost to me. For the radiator fans it's because the new mounting bracket for them has different clip placements, so they just built new mounting options to fit the new radiator and fans to the old bracket. 4: They replaced my oil pan but forgot to charge for the oil so they just put it in for free. It's clear this place doesn't screw their customers over. What more could you ask for?
