This forest has many camping sites, but they don't let yo reserve any before arriving. Our friend recommended arriving before 2pm to hopefully get a spot. We arrived then on one of the busiest most beautiful fall weekends and scored the LAST spot. Woohoo! We were allowed two tents on our camping spot, which came with a bonfire set up and cooking rack. There was a wooden bathroom only a few steps away and a lake within walking distance as well. The bathrooms didn't have sinks, but there was a water spigot down the road if needed. Most people camping here came for four or five days at a time and had awesome RV or airstreams set up on their camping sites. Therefore, most people went to bed quite early and we weren't bothered by anyone being too loud. Everyone had great fires going and we liked not being the only ones out here. The building where you pay for your campsite also had $5 log bundles you could buy, so we got a couple of those. There were tons of sticks and leaves around that we used to build up our fire as well. This spot is only a fifteen minute drive from Nashville, IN, so is such a great spot. Go check it out!

Often considered the "father of bluegrass," Monroe landed in Indiana in the early 50s and found a vibrant bluegrass and local music scene in the Bean Blossom area. That included the jamboree grounds that he would buy from locals Mae and Francis Rund about a year later. A native of Kentucky and known for his engagements at the Grand Ole' Opry, Monroe started his "Big Blue Grass Celebration" in 1967. He was hesitant to put his own name on it. The two-day event proved to be mighty popular and grew to three days. In 1968, it grew to 10,000 people and the next year Bill Monroe's name showed up on it. The first annual festival hosted by Bill Monroe was in 1967 and called the "Big Blue Grass Celebration." Bill Monroe didn't want to put his name on the event and didn't want the word "festival" because competing bluegrass and folk events used the term. It was officially a two-day event, June 24 and 25, with a few performances and a dance the night before. Monroe passed away in 1996. His son acquired the jamboree grounds, though in 1998 it was sold to Dwight Dillman and named Bill Monroe's Memorial Park & Campground. The park these days is open a lot more with a Bluegrass Hall of Fame Museum, multiple festivals, and a historical marker at the age of State Road 135 North. You can camp here, of course, with a campground, RV hook-ups, cabins, and tent options. The campground is pet friendly, and they have golf carts you can rent during festivals. They do have wheelchair accessible parking. The museum is pretty darn accessible, and it's generally possible to experience most of the music without a lot of difficulty, though be aware this is a rural setting with a combination of natural ground and gravel much of the time. I'd definitely plan ahead if accessibility is a need, and this is definitely a place I'd think about calling before scheduling accommodations if actual wheelchair access is a need. I've gone to a couple events here. I've enjoyed myself immensely. People are friendly and helpful, and there's no denying you can really capture the beauty of Brown County Here. It also helps that I do love bluegrass/Americana. There's lots to love here, however, I'll also acknowledge some of the pricing is a bit steep. However, you're here for the experience and that experience is a good one.

They have plenty of stalls for the horses of their patrons, and they provide all the needed amenities necessary for horse campers. What's nice about Midwest versus regular camping is that it is really set up for horseback riders, and they make it very convenient to bring your horse and trailer. My wife and I have visited Midwest annually since she got me into horses and we have not had a bad visit. With Midwest being on the edge of Hoosier National Forest, you have no shortage of trails to ride. The Midwest trails are well maintained, better maintained than in the national forest in fact. Best part of visiting: no cell phone signal. You are in a nice quiet place you can relax and enjoy yourself without the stress of the outside world.

I was unpleasantly surprised at how rudely I was asked to move my rig. Courtesy goes a long way with me. Just be polite and remember --we are the customers. I have spent a lot of money in their tack store and have been a weekend and day rider as well. The people who run it now need to remember that they are not the only access point into Hoosier National Forest. Sadly this will be my last visit. I have absolutely loved meeting horse campers from all around....it's just the disrespectful and rude treatment from the female manager/owner that has convinced me to go elsewhere.

When you drive up, first you notice a massive amount of green land with trees bordering the property. There's a 100 acres of land, so there's plenty of green space. Down the drive, there's a parking lot next to their main building. There's space for 30-40 cars, at the very least. Walking into the building, if you look to your right at sunset (when we arrived), you'll catch a brilliant sunset past the trees. It's a wonderful time to be in nature! Once you walk down the path and into the venue, allow your eyes to soak up the cozy warmth of the wooden walls, bar, and floor. This is a lovely place! Right when you walk in there is a bar to the right and then space for around 4-5 round tables and some counters/long table space for food. Keep walking and you'll have three amazing bathrooms to your left. I know, right? How strange is it to be in love with a venue's bathrooms, but you'll know when you see it. The bathroom doors are set to slide open along the wall, and are all made of re-purposed wood from a Brown County auction (thanks to one of the owners' family members explaining this to me!). The bathroom interiors are all bright colors and nothing is gender specific. Also, it's eco-friendly! The sink water fills up the toilet tanks and there are dozens of white towels & a laundry basket. There's a larger gathering place that can fit around 7-8 round tables in the next room, and past this is a door leading to the outside. They allow bonfires, woohoo! Beautiful. Also, the land is so far away from Bloomington and Indianapolis, that there's no light pollution ruining the night sky. On a clear night, there are dozens of sparkling stars. Camping may even be allowed (it was at this event) and there's plenty of space. They have space for disc golf as well. Overall, I loved the place. I hope to attend future events at this venue. This is a family-owned property and it's the perfect addition to the Nashville/southern Indiana community!

I opted for a smash burger with bacon; can't have enough bacon right? onion rings, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and I asked them to remove the pepper jack. Our waitress Sammy was very nice, and agreed that the yellow jackets were particularly bad of late. But there is another distillery quietly making small-batch, high-quality spirits in Nashville, and that's Bear Wallow Distillery. Located just outside of downtown Nashville, Bear Wallow Distillery is one of the only female-owned distilleries in the country. They create their spirits in a traditional copper pot still, which I learned is unique. Inside the tasting room, you can enjoy a whiskey tasting or a flight, or sip a craft cocktail and relax in the shop. I chose to enjoy a "Call Me Old Fashioned" standing up at the bar, while chatting with the guy who made me my drink. My Old Fashioned was well balanced, not too sweet and made me feel all warm inside, as a good Old Fashioned should. Those who are interested in learning more about the whiskey-making craft can go on a Farm-to-Fifth Tour, which takes you behind the scenes to learn about the history of whiskey and see the full production process. I did, and I found it very informative! I had a new appreciation for the kind of whiskey and spirits they are making here at Bear Wallow Distillery. From the ingredients they choose to the barrels they use, they really put their foot in it, as they say. If you like whiskey, or just like to try local spirits, this is a good place to visit in Nashville.

The best way to describe the picturesque compound is that it feels like the town of Spectre from the movie Big Fish. It is adorable and quaint. We had arrived in the early evening and quickly put our luggage into our adorable cottage so we could make our way down to the tavern. We enjoyed many drinks and some typical bar fare along with some conversations with the locals. The atmosphere was incredibly welcoming and homey. We walked back to our cottage and had a comfortable slumber. It was a great stay and I can't wait to return!
