We purchased VIP tickets for Drums of the Pacific expecting a special experience, but unfortunately…read moreit turned into one of the most disappointing experiences of our trip. After being seated at our VIP table (#16), we got our drinks and began chatting with our tablemates. Shortly afterward, we noticed water starting to pool around our table. As the water continued rising, it became clear that it wasn't just rainwater, it had a strong sewer-like odor. Guests at surrounding tables were also noticing it and looking around wondering if anyone was going to address the situation. Waiters and staff walked by repeatedly, but no one acknowledged what was happening. The water continued to rise beneath our table and nearby tables. I ended up keeping my feet elevated because I wasn't willing to sit with my feet in foul-smelling water. Several guests from our table complained to staff, waiters, and management, yet little was done until multiple people continued raising concerns. We eventually got up to get food from the buffet, hoping the issue would be resolved. When we requested to speak with management, the interaction was disappointing. We were told the flooding was due to water coming from the parking lot. When we asked if there was another place we could sit, we were met with a dismissive response that left us feeling like our concerns were not being taken seriously. As paying VIP guests, we weren't trying to dictate a solution, we simply expected the staff to find a reasonable accommodation. When we asked about a refund, we took the food we had already served ourselves and moved to a small bench off to the side while deciding what to do. Within a couple of minutes, a representative from Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa approached us and told us that we either needed to leave immediately or pay for the luau. I found this response unprofessional and unnecessarily confrontational. What was most disappointing was the lack of effort to make the situation right. We fully understand that unexpected issues happen. Flooding is not something the staff could have prevented. However, customer service is measured by how situations are handled. A simple acknowledgment, apology, and effort to accommodate affected guests would have gone a long way. Something as simple as, "We're so sorry for this unexpected situation. We still want you to enjoy your evening. You may finish your meal, but if you choose to stay for the show, the refund would no longer apply," would have been completely reasonable. Instead, after agreeing to leave, we went outside to finish the food already on our plates and were then told by Hyatt Regency staff that we could not stand outside and eat either. We weren't allowed to sit elsewhere inside, and we weren't allowed to finish our food outside. The entire situation became increasingly frustrating and left a very negative impression. I also felt especially bad for the honeymooning couple seated next to us, whose special evening was impacted as well. The flooding itself wasn't the issue. The issue was the response. There seemed to be no urgency, little empathy, and no meaningful attempt to accommodate guests who had paid a premium price for a VIP experience. I'm sure the luau itself is wonderful, and under normal circumstances it may have been a great experience. However, seeing how Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa handled this situation makes me hesitant to ever return. The flooding itself was unfortunate, but unexpected situations happen. What guests remember is how those situations are handled. Throughout the evening, there seemed to be very little urgency, empathy, or effort to accommodate guests who had paid a premium price for a VIP experience. The hospitality, warmth, and aloha spirit that are so often associated with Hawaiian culture were not reflected in our experience that evening. What should have been a memorable night became memorable for all the wrong reasons. Based on how this situation was handled, I would give this experience 1 star.

I was a bit disappointed that our tickets didn't include a lei, though. It's an outdoor amphitheater space, in the evening of our show we had a little sprinkle of rain, which made it interesting. My kids loved the temporary tattoo station, and the entertainment overall was excellent. The food was standard lūʻau fare; I especially enjoyed the tuna poke and the kālua pig. The staff were friendly but very busy, and I found myself getting up to look for things like soy sauce and drink refills. There were a few downsides. The host was hard to hear for much of the event, and the fire dancing portion--something my son had been excitedly looking forward to based on the posters--was surprisingly short, which left him a bit let down. The Mai Tai drinks were also extremely sweet and noticeably light on alcohol. Overall, it felt a bit like they were trying to stretch a two-and-a-half-hour show into four hours. I wouldn't attend this Luau again - it was pretty expensive and did not really provide very much value. I would consider it if I had never been to a luau before and it was convenient...

The check-in process was easy and well coordinated. There were different levels of general admission tickets: 18 and younger off to the left side, I think meet the band off to the other side, and preferred and general admission for 21 and over, which was our group. The sections were well posted and clearly cordoned off. In the open area, there was a vendor for beverages. There were also Porta potty style restrooms. I appreciated that a group of them were labeled for women and another for men. Washing stations outside for both. In our area, we were able to be right up against the barricade, so we had excellent viewing. The area in front of us was preferred. The area behind us sloped upward and at the top area there were bleachers set up for folks to have a seat. Otherwise, it was standing room only. That was perfect for us as it gave us space to dance in! The sound system was fantastic! Speakers were positioned well, loud enough for all to hear, and clarity was strong. It was not so loud that it was punishing to the ear drums, and we could enjoy singing and hearing those around us as well. Stage visibility was good: not quite centered, but nothing really obscuring our view. No shade cover here, but the breezes were refreshing and the temps were perfect once the sun set. Exiting was well guided and traffic flowed smoothly. So glad we were able to see a fave local band while we were here at MACC!

Also there weren't as many local vendors selling handmade or Maui-made items this time around, which I usually love. They didn't think the games were that fun, but their dad enjoyed playing them overall a decent family outing, but hoping for more local options and better food next year.

It is definitely a new vibe as there was more of a security presence as you entered. The other difference was the fun pass that you had to download. I felt and talking to other people that the app was fairly intrusive requiring a lot of personal information just to be able to use it and no choice to just use it as a guest. So I did not like that. I also feel like they were taking advantage of people with the additional fees for using their own app that you had to use unless you wanted to stand in the mile long lines for cash. The food booths were decent with a lot of new foods but I feel like we were missing some of the old traditional favorites. Or maybe I'm just getting old ! I did enjoy seeing people that I haven't seen in a long time some family and friends. I feel like a lot of the ride options were for the younger crowd. It just seemed like there was not as much for the teenagers and younger adults. I am at the age where I was there more for the food and the social interaction. It would have been nice if they had found a way to include all of the fair in to the one area instead of having some exhibits at the mall. Overall I did enjoy the experience overall I just feel like it was a bit expensive. Especially since we spent $80 just to park and get in. The entertainment was decent. The food was pretty good from most places. The smoke meat plate was not exactly what we expected it was decent. The nachos were pretty good and a decent value, we really enjoyed the elote with the hot Cheetos, the Boba and the sodas were a let down both were very watery and expensive. Like they went as cheap as they could on the mix. The Mahi mahi fish plate was pretty good just small portions, the poke was really good, the gyro was good very skimpy meat portions. But in the end i knew it was going to good causes so overall a good deal and i got to spend time with my family. The one that I really enjoyed was the kulolo Sunday with the Lilikoi butter. Over all the event felt rushed. But it has not happened in five years so that is understandable.
