We took our cockatiel (Piper) in to be checked out for breathing issues. We had to wait an hour and a half past the appointment time before we were seen. A doctor came in to examine Piper and the way she handled him was not the way an avian vet should. Piper was able to flail, kick his feet and move his wings. It was alarming! She said his sinuses were inflamed and a tech took Piper to the back and flushed his sinuses. They gave us an anti inflammatory. We brought him home and started to notice he was holding one of his legs up while on the perch. The clinic was closed by that time so we couldn't call them to ask about it. The following morning Piper's foot was purple and swollen and he was not using it to walk. Called and got an appt. and waited yet another 1 1/2 to be seen the next day. Then told us that nothing they could have done would have caused it and we could pay for an x-ray $$$. Proceeded to charge us another $95 appt. Told us it was a bad bruise and to watch it for a week. I talked to the manager about having to pay a second and expected them to waive it. He was defensive and rude. Told me that they would not waive the fee and proceeded to blame us. We brought our ball python for a wellness exam and sexing. The staff was absolutely incredible, totally made it for how much we had to pay! Dr. Haussmann was amazing. She shared so much knowledge with us about taking care our ball python and definitely reassured we were doing a great job taking care of our snake. Beware of this place. People should really read the 1 star reviews first cause they are true. I am not sure how they got such a good rating. My wife took her beloved pet rat there River to have a growth removed. They charged us over $800 for the surgery and they didn't provide us with a vest for the rat after the surgery. The doctor said it didn't need it but we insisted that we wanted it. Well we took the our pet rat home and it ended up chewing the surgical site open. We took the rat back to have the rat closed back up and they wanted another $500 for their mistake. They refused to fix it unless we paid. We ended up having to put our pet down at are normal Vet. Our Vet said this should of never happened. At the moment they had several emergencies ahead of us and we ended up having to put out pet down. This place has no empathy for your pets and they don't care. Especially the Chubby Blond Lady Vet. If you want your to be safe stay away from this place they do not help you out. read more

I brought my rescued blue and gold macaw in for a checkup. She's 29 and had never been to a vet before (I'm her 3rd and last caretaker). Dr. Lamb was so thorough and helpful. I really appreciated her taking the time with us (and the students who were shadowing her) to explain everything that she was doing to assess my bird's health. When her bloodwork came back, Dr. Lamb personally called me and let me know that everything was perfect. It's not easy to find an avian vet who can handle salty big birds, but I found one! It's going to cost you A LOT!! Brought my tortoise in for something that required surgery. The surgery cost $1000. I brought the tort back in for a post op follow up. The vet spent under 5 minutes checking him over then I was charged $56. I wasn't informed there would be any additional cost post surgery but I paid the bill. Came in two weeks later to have the sutures removed. The vet could only get one suture out, but wanted to put my tort under sedation to get the other one out (she couldn't see the suture and didn't know if it was actually still there or not). That was going to cost somewhere between $200-$300. I declined to let her do that and said I'd already paid out enough money. She tried to convince me (as I was getting up to leave), that it was dangerous to let the suture stay in (even though she didn't know if it was still there or not!). I told her if she were that concerned about it she would do the procedure at no extra cost. She then said that by law they were required to charge a fee for any procedure... So, now I have a tortoise with only one stitch removed and they still want to charge me $56 for the visit. I refused to pay that and walked out. The receptionist ran after me trying to get me to come back and pay. The following morning I received a call from them telling me if I didn't settle the debt that they would contact the authorities for theft of services or send my bill to collections. I told them to go right ahead. Obviously I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

I recently have relocated to Arizona and had needed to find a new vet for my elderly chameleon. I have had him for around 6 years and he was elderly when I received him so he has had his fair share of vet visits as he has always been kind of a special needs pet. Over the past month he had lost his spunk and the light in his eyes seemed to dim so I knew it was time to say goodbye to him, but I still wanted a knowledgeable vet to give him a check up to ensure euthanasia was right for him. I definitely came to the right place. Not only did they get me an appointment same day, they were kind and understanding when I was late due to being emotional leaving my house with him for what I had a feeling would be his last vet visit. From the second Dr. Ruoff walked in with her chameleon earrings and told me that she herself had a rescue veiled I was instantly relieved. I have had misdiagnoses from vets in the past who are unfamiliar with the specific species I brought in, so knowing she was familiar with chameleons and reptiles in general really eased my mind and told me I was really giving him the best care he could get and that I tried everything I could for him. Even though the office was closed by the point that it was decided it was most humane to put my chameleon down, they were patient and understanding of my weariness and let me feel comfortable taking some time to say goodbye. What really put the icing on the cake for me was the customized paw/tail print they made for me that I will be able to keep forever to remember him by. I recommend Dr. Ruoff and the staff at Arizona Exotics to anyone who has a scaled baby as they are compassionate and knowledgeable, which is a very difficult thing to come by in the reptile world. read more

I could never forget the 20 minutes I had to watch my ferret writhe silently in pain (ferret have no voice) while the so called doctor assured me she was just giving her a tranquilizer. This place would get a 2 star only because the fact that the staff was friendly and welcoming when I first walked in I would give it a .5 based on the actual experience and knowledge of the vet to exotic animals! Oh and let's not forget the manager that suddenly is unavailable over a holiday weekend! I rushed to this place to get there 15 minutes early like requested as to not pay a $50 fee. Well I showed up 20 min early only to have to wait an hour in another waiting room before anyone actually saw us! And then an additional 45 minutes before the dr could actually see us! (Now please keep in mind I have a bearded dragon and he doesn't like uncomfortable places for extended periods of time!) (as we mentioned before placing the appointment) Well $400 and over 2 1/2 hours of my time and my gas were wasted today so they could tell me "everything looks fine" and didn't actually know how to treat my exotic animal! Atleast have the courtesy to reschedule your clients if you're too busy to see them in a decent time! Furthermore, if you don't know how to treat an animal, SAY SOMETHING!! For me to call another vet and tell them the symptoms of my bearded dragon and they tell me he is most likely dehydrated and to soak him!! That was super easy!! That's the way people and their pets are suppose to be treated!! Not like a wallet and dollar signs like this place!!! Plain and simple! It's called communication! I've got to give this place a shout out for going above and beyond. I had an issue with a chicken that was in failing health. I had never stepped foot in this place nor talked to anyone prior to the day. I called to see how soon they could take a look at my girl. They said said bring her in immediately. When I got there, she passed away literally the second I handed her to the vet. They handled the situation like pros and were extremely accommodating. We took our cockatiel here for the first time because the vet we used was retiring and the other vets at that clinic don't take care of birds. Our bird was perfectly healthy and only needed a beak and nail trim. He was very stressed and acting odd when taking him home and had (what we now know) started seizing in the car and at home. We were told it was a normal stress response for cockatiels, even though he was always fine at the other vet office. When we called later, they said they don't take emergencies and were closing in a few minutes and we had to drive to their Mesa office. That location gave him fluids and anti seizure meds which sedated him for a good 12+ hours. The very next day after his routine beak and nail trim, he was dead. When I called and explained what happened, the lady just kept saying "ok, gotcha" and wanted us to bring him for an autopsy. There was no way at this point that I would go back there and I will take him back to our other clinic to get cremated. We were also told the office manager would call the same day but we never received a call, not that they could say anything to make our family feel better. If you see their replies to other negative reviews, they attack owners and say that we are grieving and that it was a lack of responsibility on the owners part. Yes, I made the terrible decision to take him there and it cost him his life. I just want to warn other bird owners so they don't go through the heartbreak that my family now has to suffer. read more

I wanted to like this place. So close to home, I could walk there. Doctors that cared... at least for a while. But, I can't recommend this hospital anymore. Ignoring the treatment of my pets, I hope they read this, take it to heart, and take steps to remedy these issues. First, the new space in Phoenix has a major balancing issue on their air conditioning. The examination rooms are unbearably hot during our long summers. Yet, the hallway is cool and breezy. It is obvious that the system simply needs a simple redesign. There are seven air returns in the 25 foot long by 4 foot wide hallway. That's why it is breezy and cool out there. The exam rooms have one supply, and one return, located right next to each other, and they close the door. Cool air enters, and gets sucked right back out. Poor design. Spend something to have someone look at it. Don't make your patients, and pet owners, suffer. Second, when someone makes an appointment, you shouldn't say "Let me look up your account." We have accounts at banks. We have records or files at doctor's offices. Your approach turned me off. Third, there are pet pharmacies online now. I attempted to refill a prescription through one, but your doctor ignored the request for verification from that pharmacy. I had to refill it at your office, at twice the price. Why? It was a common medicine, same brand and dosage. So, to me, this pet hospital has lost their way, or else money is their only driving factor. I'm not certain I can ever return. I am new to Arizona from Georgia and I went to your Phoenix location with my cockatiel Thyme for a eye infection on November 26, 2022 and it is long drive from Buckeye. I was given two prescriptions Fluriprofen Sodium and Ofloxacin. When I got home I noticed that the bottle of Fluriprofen Sodium was empty. I called the office and with the distance between Buckeye and Phoenix the decision was made to place a order with Avrio Pharmacy and the price I paid was $43.00 plus $8.00 for the shipping which I paid. When I came back with Thyme on December 17, 2022 for his follow up. I brought both bottles and gave the empty bottle to the receptionist. I was informed that they would give the the bottle to the office manager. I was told she would give me a call on Monday which I did not receive a call. I called on Tuesday and the person I spoke to said the bottle was full and it was clogged. When I had the bottle at home I shaked the bottle and could not heard anything. Your office treated me as though as I was lying which I was not. I just moved here from Georgia and the avian vets I went to I never had a problem like this. It upset me the way my integrity was being questioned. Instead of providing good customer service I was treated very poorly. What really bothered me when I received a email from Michelle Eversole on the client details it was stated: Mahler "FIRED" Karen What a way to treat a new client and being new to Arizona from Georgia. It is a long way from Buckeye to Phoenix. I am not upset with the treatment that Thyme received it is the way I was treated with the empty bottle of Fluiprofen. It you read your Core Values your office staff did not follow them. And in my 70 years I have never been fired from a job or even from a veterinary practice. FYI, They have moved offices. New location is at Beardsley and Cave Creek. I have been taking my 18 year old cockatiel here now for the last two years. They are very caring and gentle with him and understand how fragile and delicate a bird who is the equivalent of a 90 year old man. The staff and doctors listen to all your concerns and does the best they can to make their feathered patients as comfortable as possible. I will be using Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital for as long as my bird is around in his declining years, and I will also use their services for any birds I may have in the future. read more

I would like to start off by saying that I came here desperate with an animal that was on deaths doorstep in January. I was handed over three lizards by people that didn't want them, or couldn't take care of them. I've never owned a reptile before. My two leopard geckos were both sick, but one worse than the other. I could not figure out what was going on, and they kept going down hill rapidly. I was seeing a different vet and my geckos were never getting better. So after being told by the other vet my option was to put him down, I brought them here and Catherine Deng and Anna-Marie Ruoff saved my geckos. They immediately found the problems, worked for months with them, and now because of them my geckos are happy, energetic, eating insects alone again, gaining weight like crazy, healthy, and no more shedding problems! Who knew Vit. A could screw so many things up. My gecko that was on the worse end can see now and eat and hunt again! They talked with me for hours and made sure I was informed and doing the proper things to get these geckos better. Thank you for helping this new owner. AZ exotics also never tried to take money from me, which meant a lot to me because I've been struggling from COVID. I can't express how thankful I am for helping me get my new baby and my older baby healthy, and 100x's better than they ever were. The office in phoenix and mesa are full of super helpful and sweet people. Thank you guys so much for your patience, understanding, and kindness you gave me! Vet was fine, despite trying to convince us to put the guinea pig on expensive pain and joint medicine for the mere "potential" of arthritis, when such meds can damage his little liver. No thx. We declined. My biggest grievance is that their office has a draconian policy of requiring a 50 dollar deposit prior to the visit, and then "cancelling" your pet's appointment if you're a mere 10 minutes late. What happens if you're caught in traffic? Normally I've heard of a 15-minute grace period, but 10 minutes? Luckily after I complained that this was animal cruelty and asked for my 50 dollar deposit back, the manager made an exception for us and let our pet be seen. I'll never return there again though. They seem more interested in money than in the welfare of your pet. read more

Each time I have gone there I have gotten nothing but exceptional service and friendly technicians and doctors. I have over 12 reptiles and this is the place I bring them and will bring all my exotics from now on! They have really kind hearted and understanding people, who know their stuff working there. I brought in my lovebird because she was losing feathers on her chest but otherwise acting and eating normally. After $298 in x-rays, originally for a heart arrhythmia discovered during exam (which turns out it was because she was nervous), a broken egg shell was discovered in her. After an unsuccessful attempt to remove it, Dr. Lamb said that many birds live with shell fragments in them without problems, so I feel like I made a bad decision in letting them attempt this instead of exploring other less invasive answers to her feather loss. Dr. Lamb even said her feathers were growing back. She went downhill after this and I had to take her back, but ultimately she died the next day. I think the treatment may have been extreme along with the total cost of $1741. I wonder every day if she would still be here because she was not having any other symptoms before this. I am upset, too, that I never even got a follow up phone call to check on her, which makes me think they are money driven. Even my dog's vet calls to see how he is doing for just a preventative visit. read more

They do everything in their power to assist us with our bunny's needs; whether that be dealing with finances or giving helpful tips on rabbit raising. We have now taken Dexter here twice and he just turned 1 this past September. Dexter underwent surgery to be neutered and the minute we got home, he was back to his normal self!
