I've been a patient here for 5 years and the last experience with the receptionist was inexcuseable. No phone etiquette and no explanation why I needed another check-up prior to dental cleaning. Quoted $1,800. to $2,400. for an 8 lb. dog. OUTRAGEOUS! I've found another vet in my area who offers a Pet Plan covering an entire year of check-ups, vaccinations, and dental for a third of that. My dog suffers from allergies in the spring. She got a shot last year (2024) and it cost about $115 plus $30 for the nurse. I went to get my dog a shot today and the total cost was $235. $205 for the shot and $30 for the nurse fee. The big cost difference from what I was told, was they had to increase the dosage because her weight was higher this year. No communication of the increase of dosage until it was done. I told the person at the front desk that I am looking for a new vet because I am tired of paying their inflated prices. Ridiculous!!! I love my dog and I want to do what is best for her. As many others have commented below, Exeter Veterinary is out to get money. They unfortunately do NOT care about the welfare of your poor pets :'( Our dog has been suffering a severe skin infection for quite some time now. The first time that my family brought in our pup, the Vet gave him a topical solution and said that he should get blood work and a skin biopsy - approximately a $500 test. We thought our dog was experiencing an allergic reaction to something in his food, so we declined the $500 test, took the topical, and scheduled the blood work. After a week or so of the topical, we saw that the skin condition seemed to be spreading to his wonderful lovable face. Again, we returned to Exeter Veterinary, and at this point requested steroids to help with the issue and inflammation. The vet declined our request even though it was obvious that our poor puppy was experiencing a ton of pain and discomfort. We just wanted SOMEthing to offer him some relief! The issue had gotten so bad that his eyelids were starting to bleed from the constant itching. Despite our efforts to put a soft cone on his head, he was still able to get to certain areas of his head and scratch. Our beautiful golden retriever with big brown eyes was becoming so sad to look at. It was breaking. our. hearts. They took some blood to do blood tests this time. Again, they suggested a a skin biopsy for $500. We said we'd wait one more week, considering we just put in approximately $350+ for all of the vet exams, blood tests, and topical medicine. The blood tests came back negative. Finally, after another week of no changes, we took him in again. We PLEADED with the vet for a steroid to help our poor unhappy dog to get some gosh darn relief. They didn't care. When we reiterated that we could not afford the skin biopsy, they decided to do a "skin scraping" -- a mere $45 later, it was discovered that it was MANGE -- a common issue with dogs!! Apparently there are mites that live on dogs all their lives, but if something happens and their immune system becomes compromised, the mites can become rampant, which develops into mange. We were appalled. Why was mange not first suggested as a possibility when he came in, almost a month ago? Why did they need to let it get out of hand, affecting his appetite, mental health, his face, and the rest of his body? Our poor dog hasn't been able to sleep and has barely had an appetite. One day he wouldn't eat at all. Why didn't they request a "skin scraping" - a MERE $45 test - on the first visit instead of PUSHING for unnecessary blood work and skin biopsies - tests that costs hundreds of dollars? They didn't care about his health or how he was feeling. They only wanted $500 from us for a test to come back negative. If you love your pets and want them to get immediate relief or issues resolved, seek elsewhere. This place will only milk you for all of your money, leaving your poor furbaby hurt and miserable, until they can't get any more money out of you. Next time, it might be too late. I love my pup too much to ever let them take "care" of him again. read more

I never had a problem with them until I took my cat recently to the vet. He was sick and I needed blood work. Which the vet told me it was fine but when I called back to ask what the blood work had said. It was a different response. I had asked how long it would take for the antibiotics to work. And I got the response of soon. I figured okay. Today I had asked to have a copy of my cats blood work done which I paid 208.00 dollars and they refused to give them to me. Told me they couldn't give me a copy. But could fax it to another vet. So I am not allowed to have a copy of my own cats medical records. read more

We had a sick older chameleon and I was so happy for the good care he got here. Reptiles are difficult and he was no exception. He saw Dr. Achtel for his first checkup and Dr. Kline for his later sick visit. They were caring and thorough in their examinations. Dr. Kline gave me good suggestions for his care. I have been taking my 3 dogs there for years and put up with the outrageous cost because it was close to where I live. Today really upset me. I had a 2:45 & 3 pm appointment slots for my two 8lb mixed breed dogs and a separate apt on Monday for my large dog. I arrived and the entire parking lot was FULL it's one way and I had to drive around the block and ended up parking on the grass. I called them to see if this was okay, got a machine twice! So I went inside, told the girl at the desk, she said they had a high call volume and were not answering the phones at this time. I checked on and sat where I always sit in the waiting room where my two small dogs can see who's coming and going, as it helps ease their minds if they can see what's going on. We waited and watched 7 dogs come in and go out in our 45 minutes of waiting, while I hushed, and talked to my dogs crying with anxiety, shaking. Finally the front desk girl comes up to me and tells me to sit opposite where I am sitting so they don't see what's going on and cut down their anxiety!!! I wanted to tell her "my dogs have anxiety because we have been waiting 45 minutes past our apt time!!", but I bit my tongue and moved but my dogs only got worse, they could hear and smell the dogs come in and then panicked as they walked by us!! Then a man walked in with a puppy, I heard him say he was there for a 3:20 apt (it was 3:25) and she sent him to the waiting room and 3 seconds later was called back to a room!!! That's when I walked up to the desk and said, "why did that guy come in a get to go back when I have been waiting 45 minutes?" And she said he was there for a different vet than me and offered to reschedule my appointment!!!!!!!! Seriously!?!? She could have said, you will be next, or it will just be a few minutes longer... That was like a huge F-you to me after waiting at this point nearly 50 minutes, sweating with two dogs crawling and crying all over me!! I responded with, no way! Cancel it and cancel Monday with my other dog I will be seeing a new vet from now on!!" She was just like okay! bye. I am done with them!!! Office is run horribly!! And I should add the 50 minutes I was sitting there I watched her fan herself with a file folder and talk to her co workers about lunch and Baja blast soda she tried, etc... I think the only reason why she asked me to move was because I was watching her sit on her butt doing nothing the whole time!!! I can not say enough about the extra support, kindness, compassion & exercise we received over the past 9 years with our Service Dog, ATLAS, a large white German Sheppard. Atlas was a very special dog, the kind of Dog they write about, as he was never willing to separate from my wife. You see, she was, "his job" and he took his job very seriously. When he was a puppy, Atlas jumped a metal fence to be with her, and tore his entire stomach. The amazing Vets at Exeter saved his life with their quick thinking & actions. They saved his life a 2nd time when he ate her hair extensions off of her dresser because they smelled like her. Perhaps the most interesting thing about our VERY SPECIAL ATLAS was the fact that he actually broke out of a kennel outside of Penn State when we were camped somewhere that required us not to have ANY dogs for one week. He attemped to cross 1000's of acres to get to her. Atlas was alone in the wild for 9 days! He got DM, and heartbreakingly we lost him after only 9 years. But, the Vets and Staff were amazingly kind and compassionate to us, even during Covid-19. Atlas learned any command after being told 1 time. He was more human than many humans out there. We've been taking our pets here for 10 years and always thought they were overpriced and rude. However, over the past few years it has been increasingly worse in that they try to sock you for every cent they can. Because we transferred to another vet, I inquired at Exeter about getting a refund for a $30 EMPTY container they charged me for in advance of stool testing that was never performed. This was for an outdoor cat. Exeter gave me one year to collect a stool sample or I would need to buy another $30 test/container. They were unwilling to refund the $30 stating there is just a 60 day window for a refund per the owner. When I asked to speak to the owner (who staff just consulted with) I was put on hold and informed she was unavailable and had just went into "emergency pet surgery" but I could leave a message for the practice manager. Honestly, what doctor charges for testing in advance?!?! Sounds like a good way to play the odds and pocket extra cash. From pressuring to remove 24 teeth from our then 11 year old dog, which they wouldn't commit to how many teeth would come out until she was on the operating table ($$$), to charging excessive exam fees for 2 pets at one visit and/or follow up visits a week later (exam was one minute temp & heart rate $49). Uncaring and rude after putting dog to sleep last year. Very long wait times, unfriendly doctors, expensive. We transferred to Oley Veterinary Clinic after receiving several good recommendations. read more

I have been going to Exeter vet for a few months now and have been very happy with the care my pets have received. I've been seen for both cat and exotic (chinchilla) needs now. All around great staff and the doctors I have had have been wonderful. I feel like they really try to explain what's going on and what courses of action are available. Not sure about the people in the other reviews complaining about more expenses being added on, I actually think the contrary. They are very competitively priced in my opinion (And that comes from experience working for other vets in the area). They have been able to get my animals scheduled to be seen almost immediately in several cases, with no emergency fee, where other hospitals have had no availability for a week! I will continue to take my pets there and recommend them to others. read more

The worst veterinarian experience I have every had. Do not take your pets here. I asked very detailed questions about the charges before I made the appointment and when I went to check out it was triple the amount and when I questioned it, the receptionist said, oh the person who explained it to you was wrong. I ended up having to pay the bill and I feel like they are really out to scam the clients. I paid a huge bill for a couple of minutes of service. A service my old vet charged 80% less for. I will NOT go to the Exeter Veterinarian Hospital vet again. I called last week for an appointment for my new puppy and asked for a FEMALE vet. When I got to the vet I saw that I was scheduled with a MALE vet and his assistant was EXTREMELY rude to me. The vet didn't even give me any helpful information. He just poked and looked at my dog and said that's fine. He wasn't even sure when she needed her next vaccinations! I was instructed to bring in a fecal sample and was to find out the results the next day. A week went by and I still did not hear from the vet. I called and the receptionist told me that "yes, your dog tested positive, a prescription is sitting here for her" and I wasn't able to find out what she tested positive for until a vet called me back. Why did I put my contact information on the form that was copied so many times it was unreadable if they don't even use the information?! When I told the vet about my experience and told him I was not coming back he replied "Ok, no problem" he obviously could have cared less about my experience. Incredibly rude and inconsiderate.
