I first asked if they ever worked with any hypermobile clients because so many trainers don't even know what that is, and when I sent a message to Beometry, Isaac set up a time for a call to discuss my needs and spent a whole hour talking to me on the phone about my goals, past injuries, hypermobility, past athletic experiences etc! Most places would just want to get you in the door as soon as possible and take your money, but I felt like Isaac truly understood my issues and actually cared! He put together a plan for me and I have worked with Miriam in a small group personal training session. Miriam is unbelievably talented and came up with all kinds of workarounds due to some of the issues I have with my joints. When I first came in, I still had a lot of pain and stiffness in my neck, back and ribs, and we have worked on improving my mobility, especially in my ribs, and breathing. After going to Beometry for a few months, I just went on my first backpacking trip in 20 years, which is something I never thought I'd be able to do again, and I'm actually feeling so well that I am planning on hiking the PCT next year (all 2,650 miles of it). I can't thank Beometry enough and would recommend them to anyone in the area who is looking for a trainer whether it's for weight loss, general fitness, or gaining mobility back to live pain free!!

I have NEVER lifted weights before so CrossFit was all new to me!" I was impressed by how friendly and welcoming EVERYONE is from the young couple that own the business to the coaches to all the fellow people that come for a workout. With zero experience everyone was patient with me and walked me through the workout classes. The classes are in different levels. I really enjoy the classes for people 55 years and older. The workouts are designed for someone older or less skilled like me. They usually have between 10 and 25 people in each hour long class. The first 10 minutes or so are spent stretching and warming you up for the workout. They rotate between upper and lower body workouts (often each day has a combination of the two and then there is a cardio element. After my 20 visit pass ran out I chose a monthly plan that works for me. I can attend up to 4 classes a week and it costs me less than $5 a class. That is a great value for the workouts you get. In addition to the improved fitness I have also made some new friends and hope to keep coming for a long time!

It's a smaller gym, the owners John and Ashley are great. The other members have been nothing but helpful and encouraging. I feel like I have a lot of very knowledgeable, fitness oriented individuals actively helping me feel better. To me, that's HUGE. anyway, after a few short weeks, coming in 3 times per week, I no longer need my cane and am experiencing far less pain. I went from barely able to walk to doing split squats and actual RUNNING! This place is great!

The entire team here is incredible and the members are awesome as well. We have both done personal training (my trainer was Kam) here and learned a lot and we go to the Sunday class most often . Ascent is both welcoming and accommodating to folks of all identities and abilities and of all sizes. As someone with concerns about environments that can foster an environment where counting calories and weighing in are encouraged or emphasize is put on size, Ascent is the exact opposite. Ascent is a wonderful unicorn place where people can go just to learn how to better move their bodies and grow stronger and find victories that have nothing to do with size- like hiking longer distances, or having less back pain, or being able to lift more. They always offer alternative exercises to meet people where they're at which is super refreshing. They also host so many great events and series classes like queer inclusive self defense. We drive from a fair distance away because the community here is so much better and they have a mission you can't help but support. By far the best collective group of humans I've met since moving to Washington and that is such a testament to the owners Luca and Katie!

The focus at this gym is functional fitness, so you do a variety of exercises each time you go--including crawling, get-ups, weights (and body weight exercises), lunges, etc. I also love that the trainers will give plenty of modifications as needed, as I'm limited in shoulder mobility due to an injury. Their main format is small group classes, but personal training and open gym hours are also available. Which works for me, became I'm way more accountable when I'm in a class anyway! I've gotten noticeably stronger since I first started, which has helped me not only in my work and at home, but with my self-confidence overall. Exercise really is the best self care. Thank you, Ascent Fitness!

I felt completely welcomed and at home the first time I set foot in Brandon's studio. The rates are comparable to others I have seen, the hours are awesome, the equipment is extremely nice and the instructors are outstanding! When I first came (about 2 years ago) it was with a friend to try a reformer class. I purchased the "beginners pack" which is an excellent deal (includes matt and reformer classes along with 5 privates... YES I SAID 5 PRIVATES!) Brandon (the owner) asked me about my goals and limitations/why I wanted to try Pilates. He hooked me up with an AMAZING instructor, Kris, who not only has helped me in my practice, but has really helped me with my life. It was like it was meant to be- a serious blessing. All of the instructors are great- and very different. It is well worth mixing it up and taking the different classes and trying privates with each of them. They all have a different vibe, but are all well informed to make modifications for your individual needs. Matt and reformer classes are offered throughout the day, and they even have a TRX class ( I have never taken it but I know it is popular!) I came here with a TON of body drama (physically and mentally), and although I still suffer, my symptoms are SO MUCH BETTER. As I said in my google review, the people who work here genuinely care about you as a person- not just a client. Sometimes I feel like I go just for the vibe/ chit chat instead of the practice :) I HIGHLY suggest checking this studio out if you are in Tacoma. You will not regret it. HOT TIP- I started by attending classes/session 3-4 times a week, then going a little wild (yaaaa maybe I was doing too much), and now back to 3-4... and yes you will notice a huge difference in how your body moves, feels and looks! It totally works!

I'd never done personal training before, but a friend recommended Summit and I've been partaking in several sessions monthly. Working out with a trainer is much better for me personally, and I've started to see results somewhat instantaneously. I certainly feel the difference between working out solo vs being held accountable and being personally coached. Via Summit I've worked with two trainers and fancied them both - Robert and John are awesome! John has years of coaching and training both professional athletes, various teams, and individuals such as myself. Robert was a college athlete and is in prime shape himself, and he really kicked my butt at my sessions. Bottom line, do you want to get in shape in a more structured, efficient manner or beat around the bush flailing on your own? I'll continue with my PT and am stoked to have found this gem of a gym (2 locations).

Have you ever joined a gym and didn't see results? Orangetheory Fitness is NOT that! If you are…read morelooking for a physical transformation with personal coaches pushing you, and you enjoy workout-classes, this is it! I started with OrangeTheory Fitness (OTF) Tacoma, before the University Place branch studio opened, and my husband joined UP OTF as a new grand-opening-member. We used to go to the 5am classes together until Covid shut everything down. UP OTF kept calling me on the phone to rejoin, and after many bad-habits (overeating, drinking, late-night snacking, lack of exercise, binge-watching and sedentary-habits) formed and I was embarrassed of my weight-gain, I rejoined OTF UP last May. The thing I love about Orangetheory is, you really don't need to think: just show up! The coaches take over and when you leave, you'll be a sweaty mess! I can never get THAT good of a workout (burning 500 calories) on my own at a gym in under an hour (50 mins) in comparison. So, I've been showing-up, and guess what happened? My inner-athlete came out! My old-college-athlete, buried deep within my now post-50-year-old body, came out. My desire to improve and change took over. It was buried DEEP within me, under those layers of extra 35 pounds I'd gained post-COVID, plus another 20 pounds post college, but it became awakened! Orangetheory Fitness says, if you show up with the desire to change, you will burn 500 calories every class! I also joined Noom, an app on my phone to track and teach me about my dietary habits, as I knew I wanted to improve my nutrition habits. The combination of eating healthy + OTF, in the past 9 months I've successfully lost 37 pounds! And I'm stronger and healthier! I love the coaches encouragement and the music, at OTF. What they do is research evidence-based, so they will call you out by your name! They will push you to use heavier weights or run harder and faster. I needed that! I needed the push from people who care to help get me across my finish line of personal goals. I wasn't able to lose the weight on my own: I'd tried for years! I didn't stop exercising during Covid, but walking my dog isn't the same as being told to lift heavy weights. And when was the last time I'd chosen to run hard on a treadmill at another gym? I never chose the treadmill! And I would never get on a rower for 20 minutes! But at OTF I do! It's that herd-mentality of if the entire group is doing it, I will too! And at OTF I do what I'm told, and I love the results!

I wanted to love the new Morgan Family YMCA, I really did!!…read more The building is brand new, clean, modern, and the workout equipment is genuinely impressive. On the surface it feels like an upgrade. But the second you get into the locker room, sauna, and steam room situation, it becomes obvious that whoever designed this either doesn't use it, or didn't care how people actually move through the space day to day. The old Morgan YMCA worked. It was organized, adult-friendly, and felt like a place you could actually relax. This new one is the complete opposite. First off, the locker room setup is a mess now. A lot of older YMCAs had adult locker rooms and separate areas for kids, which kept things smoother, quieter, and more respectful. Now it's all combined, and it feels chaotic. Kids running around everywhere, loud, cramped, and you genuinely have to watch your stuff more than you should at a gym. The lockers are also way too tight together. It's uncomfortable trying to change, uncomfortable trying to grab your stuff, and the locker doors don't even open all the way because they're packed so close. It looks sleek on paper, but it clearly wasn't tested in real life at busy hours. The floor situation is another problem. The drains aren't good enough, and the floor is constantly dirty. People track in dirt and moisture from outside, especially from the new grass, and there's no real buffer zone, no solid drying area, nothing to keep the locker room from turning into a dirty mess. You're basically stepping around grime nonstop. Now the biggest disappointment, the sauna. Yes, it's bigger, but it's a worse sauna. It's not nearly as hot as the old Morgan YMCA sauna was, and everybody notices it. The old one hit you immediately. This new one takes about twice as long to even feel close to what the old one did, and that defeats the whole purpose. And I'm convinced the main reason is the design choice that makes no sense, the doors are fully glass and there's a huge window, so heat leaks out nonstop. It looks "modern," sure, but it performs worse. It's a sauna, not a display case. The steam room is the only part that still feels like it has power because it's extremely hot. But even then, it's almost too hot in a bad way. The steam jet placement is ridiculous. If you sit lower, it blasts so close to the ground that it literally feels like it's boiling your legs. I love steam rooms, but this wasn't relaxing, it was borderline painful, and it honestly made me wonder if it's even safe. And then there's the co-ed sauna situation now. It's just not the same experience. It used to be quieter and more peaceful. Now it's louder, more talking, and way less relaxing. If you used the sauna as a mental reset, this is a straight downgrade. On top of that, the layout getting to the locker room area is insane. There's a gigantic rock wall shoved right into the hallway, creating a constant traffic jam. Kids line up and block the entire walkway, so you're squeezing through like you're in high school and the bell just rang. They could've moved it into the corner and fixed the problem, but instead it's planted right in everyone's way. The crazy part is this is disappointing because the building is clearly nice. They spent money, they just spent it on the wrong things. This new Morgan Family YMCA could've been perfect, but the locker room setup, cramped lockers, dirty floors, bad drainage, hallway bottleneck, and weaker sauna makes it feel like a complete downgrade. One star. Huge disappointment!!

I have always been a huge fan of the YMCA, especially the Morgan Branch. I'll most likely end up going to Lakewood, or just quitting all together and going elsewhere. It's concerning to me that this cooperation took a lot of money and did absolutely EVERYTHING nobody wanted. Read the other reviews... they say it all. Not to mention the safety as far as wet floors, heat in the aquatics center, and lack of access for older or disabled people. The whole thing is sad. Bad move YMCA. And I didn't even know the rates went up until reading someone else's review... which is an absolute joke. This new gym feels like the IKEA of gyms.
