My experience at Excell Orthopedics in Woburn was extremely disappointing. The office staff was friendly, welcoming, and I was seen right on time. My intake was completed, my medications were reviewed, and I was sent for X-rays before seeing the physician. The problem is that when I scheduled the appointment, I clearly explained the reason I needed to be seen, provided the testing that had already been completed, and filled out the online questionnaire detailing my symptoms and medical history. When the doctor entered the room, he asked why I was there. After I explained, he told me he does not treat that condition and would refer me to Neurology--even though Neurology was the specialty that referred me to him in the first place. I appreciate the doctor's honesty and that he did not attempt to treat something outside his area of expertise. However, it is frustrating that no one reviewed my referral, records, test results, or questionnaire beforehand. Had they done so, someone could have informed me that this provider does not treat my condition, saving me from leaving work, paying a specialist copay, undergoing unnecessary X-rays, and incurring additional insurance costs. The appointment lasted less than 10 minutes. The doctor reviewed EMG results I was already aware of and documented that my symptoms could be related to neuropathy, despite my explaining that my neuropathy affects my legs and feet, has significantly improved, and is not related to the shoulder and hand symptoms that began while taking a medication. I contacted a manager afterward, who acknowledged the issue and said she would educate the staff and get back to me. More than 24 hours later, I have not received a follow-up. While I appreciate the commitment to staff education, it does not address the time, money, and energy I lost, including the copays and additional imaging costs. Overall, this felt like a completely avoidable situation that should have been identified before I ever arrived for the appointment. My appointment was at 2:20 I checked in my receipt says 2:13, the women who checked me in was extremely kind and we chatted a few - I was brought back right at 2:20, went for xray at 2:30 after sitting going over my medications ect .. back to the room. The X-ray tech was very friendly also! I was back in my car at 2:43. read more

I have been a patient with Excel for many years. I have had both knees replaced and one shoulder done twice. The knee surgeries were done perfectly. Dr. Connors was professional, talented,experienced and had a wonderful way of connecting with patients. Their part time back surgeon is not the best. He is too busy and doesn't give the confidence that you need to allow someone to cut into your spine. His work was minimally acceptable. The doctor who specializes in shoulder surgery was a dissatisfaction. After doing a shoulder twice, he dropped the case by just stopping communication. I was given the name of a different doctor who he didn't have any real knowledge of and ordered a final scan the results of which he never spoke to me about. At a final meeting that I made to try and find out what we were doing next, he was detached, in a hurry to just drop the case. He was clearly not interested in continuing to try and find a solution. Being a senior doctor who heads the department, he was completely uninterested in continuing with me. I have had to find another surgeon to continue working with who is willing to find a way to correct the problem and find a way to help get the daily pain unDer some control. The support staff at Excel is the best I could ask for. They are helpful, courteous and go above and beyond to get you what you need. So, if you decide to use this business, be very aware of the unprofessional attitude of some of the surgeons and be sure to make the right choice. read more

Recently, I finished my physical therapy at Excel Physical Therapy at 200 Unicorn Park in Woburn, Massachusett. I had several tears in my Rotator Cuff which was very painful. Dr Allessandro recommended that I have Physical Therapy. My Physical Therapist's names were LEIGH P & KIMBERLY S. Both of them were excellent! They were so caring, and gentle. They helped me improve so much! Dr Alessandro & Dr Connors are also excellent! Dr Connors replaced my hip a few years ago. I would recommend going to Excel for all your orthopedic needs! I had a total knee replacement done by Dr Fehm on 8/20 and it went perfectly.The courteous professionalism of all involved was amazing.The PREOP,and OR staff at Winchester Hospital were excellent.EVERYONE was kind and competent.I stayed 1 night and the nurses,aides and therapists were wonderful. Hold on to your wallet, these people will extract as much $$$$$$$ as they possibly can out of each interaction. A knee brace that is available new on line for $180 was marked up to $1100 billed to the insurance company and being early in the year the patent is responsible for over $600 out of pocket. Nice profit margin. This is just one example as there are many others from our experience. It is medical providers like this that give the entire industry a bad name for overcharging and Kathy in the billing dept is no help, her entire argument is your insurance company negotiated this and you pay up, which on the surface is correct but the patent has no control over any of this, only the providers and insurance companies do and we are just along for the ride. Smart providers with highly paid financial consultants taking advantage of this fact are the problem why medical costs are out of hand and unaffordable. My advice, shop around for a provider that has a heart and can help you with the costs, not one that milks you for every single penny they can get. read more

Throwaway account, because I have multiple appointments over the next few months, and don't want it to be too awkward. Not giving a negative review to be evil - but hopefully they can learn from this. My appointment was about 45 mins late, I understand things happen, but my time is just as important. I had to go to work, figured an early morning would have gone smoother. I spent more time waiting, than I did with the doctor. The doctor was cold, with no bedside manner. Felt almost like they were dismissing the pain I was in. Before you think 'Oh she's being a Karen.' No, I was ultra apologetic, when I asked how much longer it was going to be, before I was taken in and explained I needed to go back to the office, and I would reschedule, but I couldn't wait much longer. I didn't yell, or scream. I wasn't passive aggressive. I understand the world doesn't revolve around me, but at the same time - my time is just ask important, and I got stuff to do too. Recommended a cortisone shot, & PT. See how I felt post PT, and get some film if it didn't help. I got the cortisone shot a couple days ago, they were nicer(on time), but once again - dismissed the pain I was in. I understand it doesn't look that bad to YOU, but it doesn't mean it's a walk in the park for me. You think I want to dealing this mayhem & foolishness - let alone waste money on this? You're severely mistaken. If you want to say I'm being a crybaby? Fine. But I already feel like crap, and dismissing the way a patient feels isn't appropriate. I understand there are drama queens, and fakers. But if I'm dragging my leg at the end of the day, because if I walk normally - it gives out, and I'm in tremendous pain - something is wrong, and should be taken seriously. I'm not being sent in to waste your time. I'm there because I genuinely need help. Maybe I caught people on a bad day? Sure, but when you're in a customer service role, you gotta check that at the door. And remember you're there to help people, who feel like crap, and not make them feel worse. read more

I asked them to call the doctor and they refused. But here's where the specifics are absolutely infuriating. "We need the order to be within 30 days of the start of care." This is only about the trouble I had trying to get an appointment for treatment. It has nothing to do with the PT/Medical staff. Called once my Dr recommended PT for my shoulder. Was told to FAX over the information. I didn't think that was a still being done. Waited a couple of days and called back. Shockingly, they have no record of the fax. Called Dr and had them re-send orders. Repeat process 3X's. After finally calling back to see if they received the third attempt, was told that since the first appointment available was more than 30 days since the Dr wrote the orders, I would need to get an updated set of orders. I mentioned that if they didn't lose the first 2 fax attempts, with confirmations from my Dr's office, the orders would be in compliance. I am 60 and this is the first time I have ever written a bad review on anything. Friday I was scheduled to see Ryan Cuerdon, PA ( I was in a lot of pain) , I was 34/40 minutes late for the appointment because I experienced traffic/accidents and lots of road flooding while driving up from the Cape. Dr Cuerdon and his medical assistance were well aware of the bad weather as streets were flooded in Woburn and that it took 4 hours and 15 minutes to get there. It is a 1.5 hour drive and I allowed 3.5 hours but It took 4 hour and 15 minutes to arrive. I checked in with the office uring my drive. I apologized and explained the situation of the long ride due t weather. I explained I left my disabled husband under the care of an aid for $30.00 an hour. I offered to see any practitioner (there were many there) and told them i would gladly wait a few hours to see if anyone could fit me in incase someone cancelled.. I was turned down. The gentlemen checking me in was very professional and kind but Dr Cuerdon and his medical assistant only knew I was late. They had no interest in understanding the why. I believe in rules but there are times when you have to make exceptions for people that are truly sorry for their mistake and are in a difficult situation. They may be wonderful practitioners but I feel like this practice shows no compassion to their patient. read more

I went on sevedavid.robertson@mahouse.govral visits for my sore knee and hip at Excel. During one visit I was diagnosed with an arthitic knee and got a shot of some type of cortisone and a brace. The next visit the same doctor indicated it may be my hip. So he moved my left leg back and forth putting me in severe pain. I ended up agreeing to several shots of some kind of pain killer in my hip. This made me very dizzy and I was sent back home and I was very sick driiving my way home. A day later my entire hip was bruised with black and blue marks. The "shot" lasted one day. I did not show up for the next two visits and when I called back to try it again and make another appointment they refused to accept me. Very horrible experience. read more

JUST A TEAM OF PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE A CONGLOMERATE FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON YOUR MONEY BUT CERTAINLY NOT YOUR CARE. ive been going to Lahey clinic since 2005 and am sick to my stomach at the way this hospital in particular used a portal system as a new standard of telling folks to take a flying leap. i would describe it as a medical brothel; for profit, unconcerned about your health, time, or you as a human being, AND YOU LEAVE THERE KNOWING YOU JUST GOT BONED. they try and have everyone on some terrible portal (that the doctors wont even use) so you cant actually speak to other humans about what kinda awful dehumanizing care theyre trying to pass off as normal. it isnt, you should go somewhere else. these kind of ethics are disgusting. no doubt the board of directors are less concerned with you and me and more concerned with their third vacation home and if they can afford a heated driveway for it. when u look at this place under a for-profit lens it makes perfect sense why i would have to wait over two months to get scheduled and in for an MRI only to have my doctor go MIA and them insist i come back for a fourth time to have her break down the mri that i had to call SIX TIMES about. 1st time was after my initial appointment (where i was told not to call them???) to setup my MRI and they told me to call back. 2nd time was to actually set up the MRI 3rd time was after the MRI had been done asking for update to which they informed me it was sitting in the system for a week and the doctor doesnt even have it "whoopsies!!" 4th time was to request for my doc to tell me what the MRI said 5th time they informed me if i wanted my results i had to come in for another appointment. i said i wasnt doing that please update with results via phone call or portal as im unhappy with the unprofessional way this has gone. 6th and last time they informed me my doc would call me on "tuesday or thursday" and update me. that was two weeks ago and i still havnt heard anything in portal or on phone. this place is horrendous. read more

Both my husband and I have received excellent care here (OT and PT). Dr. Virginia Hung (an amazing hand surgeon) operated on my wrist. ER nurses at Winchester hospital raved about Dr Hung. She did a superb job on my wrist. No pain, no infection, healed really well. Pre-op and post-op appointments were also excellent. I had OT right away with Beth who is phenomenal. She is so devoted, experienced and highly effective. She is genuinely caring. I improved so fast under her care. My husband works with Greg in the PT department for his knee. Before Excel, my husband had a bad experience with a negligent and incompetent PT at a different PT center causing him to have to have a second knee surgery. It is so different at Excel. My husband LOVES Greg and Excel. He said it's night and day between Excel and the other PT office. Greg is so experienced, thorough, highly capable and knowledgeable. My husband saw the difference and improvement right away. The support team there is also wonderful. We love Mairi, Maura, Britney and Amy. read more

I am very grateful that I was able to see Dr. Taylor Horst at Excel Orthopaedic Specialists. Dr. Horst was professional and personable. He explained the type of injury I have, the typical recovery, and the and the plan plan. He discussed the options with me, and told me the reasoning behind his recommendations. I understood the plan and what activities I should and shouldn't do. Before he left the room, he asked me if I had any other questions. I didn't, because he had spent enough time with me and explained what I needed to know, that there was nothing left for me to ask. And the practice is great. I I couldn't get into the portal and when I told the woman at check in, gave me a sheet with a new login, and it worked when I got home. The staff wears name tags. The person who took me to the exam room introduced himself, and used my name. The x-ray tech explained what was going to happen. These may seem like basic customer service actions, but in my experience they don't always happen. I can only repeat how grateful I am that I got into this practice. I would enthusiastically recommend them to my friends and family. If you have to drive to get there, it is worth the drive. read more

I just lost the last decade of my life because I had surgery here. It was about 10 years ago I had OCD of the talus and had an allograph put in my ankle by Czarnecki. Just never healed properly. Tons of PT. Lots of pain when walking and suffered in pain for 10 years without anyone wanting to prescribe pain meds due to the war on drugs. 10 years! So I got a power wheel chair instead to relieve me of my pain. I've gained over 150 lbs since this surgery due to not be able to walk. I had the wheel chair over 5 years. I've done LOTS of sitting around watching the world go by without me. Last year at the 9 year mark the pain just started to go away on it's own, slowly. At the 10 year mark I am NOW finally walking without pain on non concrete surfaces. Not many muscles in my body anymore from years of a wheel chair. I still have lots of swelling but CBD has fixed that and I was constantly getting plantar fascitis due to this surgery until I got diabetic sneakers from a podiatrist and that did wonders for my ankle pain. 9 years of excruciating pain. 9 years of not being able to walk into a forest and smell the great outdoors! No hiking, no geocaching. Prisoner in my own home. Thanks alot. I really appreciated it! Now that I'm walking again I'm finding it quite hard as I've lost every muscle in my body, Im now obese and can't do much. Need TONS of PT. Just tons! read more

I felt so compelled to warn the next patient about going here that I have written my first review on Yelp. The doctor seemed nice and knowledgeable and there wasn't a long wait to be seen. The support staff and ultimately the office manager are destroying this medical office. An entire month of back and forth to try and get the gel shot for my knee and I have not received care. After the doctor's assistant was told in writing that my insurance needed them to choose a medication that was covered under my plan they did nothing and did not relay this to me. Instead I was told many stories about why they didn't have the shots. Weeks went by and my calls were ignored and I was given the run around. Ultimately discussing this with the office manager got me no where, just more frustrated. Please choose somewhere else to go for proper care. read more

Well- chalk this one up as to another reason I do not go to a doctor or specialists unless I am in serious need of help. My foot has been very painful for months. My own PCP ordered x-rays that really did not show anything. The staff was nice and I waited only about 10 minutes before going back. Waited another 15 for the MD to show up. He came in, rushing. Going over my x-rays in an expedited manner and talking in all medical terms. Luckily, I am a nurse! Paying $350 dollars for him to say tendinitis and go to PT, followed by "oh and you don't need to follow-up." Wow- he has it all planned out for me without even barely listening to me or making a plan if PT didn't work. What a waste. I am annoyed at myself for not knowing better that these visits are a waste of time and money! Wish I was making $35 bucks a minute. read more

I have been calling excel orthopedics for three months. I have a problem with my knee and was supposed to get injections. They forgot about me, they even told me. I called them in february and the medication was ordered from express scripts. I called them and I talked to Sabrina who told me they would help me. A month ago the pharmacy called them they never called me and told me. They was no medication ordered did they call to tell me No. When you call them you will be on hold for hours, they do not follow up with anything. I am in a great deal of pain, and this has been going on for months. Just talked to them now, they might get back to me after May 8th. I recently went to see Dr Czarnecki for knee pain and was promptly ask by the secretary how she could help me and promptly checked in. Iwas taken right away even though I was early for my appointment. Called in and talked to the nurse about why I was there and because of the knee pain I was taken promptly for an xray of my knee. Returned right away and was seen by Dr Czarnecki as soon as I returned to the exam room. I explained my pain and how long I had it..he listened answered my questions and concerns. He went over some different options for treatment and I decided along with his recommendation of a cortasone shot that he did right there. 48 hours after the shot I have no pain in the knee and able to walk, kneel and climb stairs. Was a wonderful experience and highly recommend excel for treatment. And cant say enough about Dr Czarnecki and how professional and caring he is read more

This is the McDonalds drive through of doctors offices. Let's start with the literally stupid layout of the check in desk. If you're lucky one of the disgruntled workers will wave you over. They are generally chit chatting and avoiding eye contact at all costs. The young woman who is front and center is the best! She is usually dressed for her next work out and we were fortune enough to see her backside as she yanked her jeans up on the way to the printer. We took a seat outside the surgical scheduling offices and we're treated to expletives our of office and then running into each other's offices for gossip and laughing, but not after they pointed at us and shut the door. Now let's get to the doctor. We saw Dr Yeh and although he was nice enough, our time was shorter than a visit with the pope. I think they have their hourly wage down to the minute and we had to basically shout our questions after his 90 sec visit out the door before poof he was gone. Same goes for his delightful assistant "show yourself out" sure ok - Don't come here. Seek a practice that has the time and actually cares about you and not your wallet. Free gift to Excel - fire your front line or hire a manager to manage and train your merry band of disgruntled. You should be ashamed at the level of service they don't provide. read more

Had ACL reconstruction here a few years ago with Dr.Czarnecki, and he made a gruesome situation very very easy. He was extremely knowledgeable and put me at ease when explaining the procedure. Surgery went well, recovery from ACL surgery is never easy but you're in excellent hands with Dr.Czarnecki! read more

The care was great. The PA-C, was competent and friendly. He answered questions and was efficient in diagnosing. No surgery required thank goodness. The billing practices on the other hand, were less impressive. The practice up-charged +500% for a knee-brace. When I called them to ask about it, they shrugged it off as a petty "gripe", and told me that the up-charge was for "the physician's time fitting and stocking the brace"... Seriously? Is that even legal? There was already a line item on their bill for the physician's time. Adding a hidden labor component to the brace is a form of double billing IMO. Not to mention the brace they "sold" me started falling apart after 1 month. ~$30-40 item sold for ~$300 and insurance doesn't cover? Thanks guys. All that said, it's probably more an example of our bloated broken medical system than this provider in particular. But still, frustrated enough to air my "gripe" here. read more

This place is very unprofessional! I never write reviews and this is actually my first review so I hope someone from this place reads it and takes action! First of all, they don't even get back to you in timely manner about results so we have to wait for days on ends just to hear what's going on with our health (which is very painful without going into any specific details). Second of all, when we call on our own, we're put on hold for more than 10 mins then told the doctor hadn't even put the orders in to get the tests done! And the last thing that was very infuriating was they will not tell us the surgery time TWO days before hand??? I myself work at a doctors office and I know for a fact that is NOT how surgeries work! Patients are supposed be made aware of surgeries dates & times at LEAST a week ahead if not more!!! Avoid this place the best you can! read more

The records department never answers the phone so I can't even get an appointment! I have called the front office multiple times and when they redirect me to records no one ever answers. I tried the company email twice and also never received a response. When they called me to tell me I needed to send more information they didn't even bother to leave a message, so I had no idea they needed more information from me! It's a horrible bureaucratic experience to go through for people who are suffering in pain waiting to get an appointment! I've been a patient of Excel for years and have had multiple surgeries. I've seen different providers and have had PT several times. I can speak only of the excellence in care that I've received. Yes, it's a busy practice. But I've never seen the indifference in the check-in process that some people have reported. I may have been kept waiting in the examining room at times longer than I would have liked, but when my provider comes in and gives me his/her full attention, with no rushing me, I realize that that is what they are doing for those before me - hence the delay. I have full confidence that I've been taken care of well, and I trust the advice I've been given. My advice to those who are unhappy with their provider: don't assume that all providers are like the one you are unhappy with. Everyone has his/her own style and personality. Patients switch providers in a practice all the time, so don't feel self-conscious if you choose to go with someone else. I've also had PT in other locations and I can tell you that the open, gym-like atmosphere that Excel PT has is very common. If you like privacy and want a separate room for your PT, this is not the place for you. You would definitely want to ask upfront when you call a PT office as to what their layout is. For those who were misdiagnosed or had complications, I'm truly sorry. read more

Before I chose an orthopedist, I read reviews on Yelp. Some reviews for 'Excel Orthopaedic Specialists' were not too flattering. One person said, "Excel is in it to make money." Another said, "...The reception is like an airline terminal with ten people checking you in..." In response, I will say the following: *All businesses* (both for-profit and not-for-profit) must pay attention to the bottom line to survive, so you shouldn't be surprised when you find one that favors efficiency. Regarding my experience: I visited Excel twice and was 100% satisfied on both occasions. When I first visited, one of the receptionists promptly processed my insurance information. My appointment began on time. I met with Dr. Devellis. He paid close attention when I described the circumstances of my injury; he asked a few questions; and then he gave his prognosis. He was very friendly and very succinct. Without qualification, Dr. DeVellis is one of the most competent medical professionals I have ever met. Bottom Line: I would highly recommend Excel to anyone who needs orthopedic services. read more

I broke my shoulder and was referred to Excel by Lahey Clinic, as the latter couldn't get me an appt with an orthopaedic surgeon in under 2 weeks. I was immediately impressed by the friendliness of the staff from the check in desk all the way up to the doctors. They performed surgery on my shoulder (@Winchester Hospital) and then to Excel for PT. Again, I was immediately impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. I felt like a patient and not a file number like one does at Lahey Clinic. My two PTs, Greg & Shayne, have restored so much range of motion and strength in such a short amount of time. The positive energy in the main room where all the patients are seen is also tangible. Per some of the other reviews, it is expensive, about $200/visit and I go twice a week. Most of this is covered by insurance. It it COMPLETELY worth the money, they are extremely good at what they do and friends/family are stunned how quickly I've improved less than a month after surgery.
